With the rising cost and complexity of trucks, the Nissan Frontier is a safe haven for those that want something straightforward. However, this does come at a cost when comparing it to the competent Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon, Toyota Tacoma, Jeep Gladiator and I suppose the Honda Ridgeline too.
Thank you, Royal on the Eastside, for letting me test drive the Frontier for this video!

I have a 2020 Frontier SV 4x4 long bed crew cab with 55k miles. This was the first year for the vq38 / 9 speed. Zero issues so far. It tows well and does what you want it. It's easy to clean and I have zero complaints except the turning radius. The largest difference in driving the 9 speed vs traditional lower geared transmissions is you need to be deliberate in the throttle asking it to do what you want. It likes to rev and is playful. I really enjoy the truck and will have it for a long time. It's just good at nearly everything.

I had Nissan for over 2 decades all manual transmission (cars, trucks, SUVs). But with no manual transmission option on the 2024 Frontier eliminates it from my very short list. Which is now super short. I do not need nor want more computerized stuff on my vehicle. For me power locks, windows, mirrors, seat are border line too "hi- tech" but I can live with it. Keyless starters, electronic parking break, automatic transmission, start/stop engine, hybrid or electronic engine(s), electronic dash, among many other stuff is stuff I can not have on my vehicles. I guess if I want a Frontier I will need to get an older used one. I know the Frontier does not use the incredibly unreliable Jatco CVT transmissions. But I never had (or personally heard of) a single issue on the Nissan (Toyota, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Honda, Isuzu) manual transmissions. Yes, the clutch can wears out but ~$1K later (usually less) and is as good as new.

I think there's more of us than the mfgs like to admit. My 2012 Frontier 4x4 6 speed suits me well. Power door locks are convenient as are power windows, but could do without. Screw that "infotainment" crap. I have a phone with all of that, plus factory stereos are weak. Is it more safe to operate because it's in the dash? More tech, more to fail, more costly to buy or fix. I'd buy a luxury car if that was important to me. Nope!

It cost them more in the long run. Think about it they would need to have more dies and molds to fit all the replacement plastic bits to fill the holes, make new instrument clusters etc. this way is better, all the trims get the same thing. Frontier impressed me years ago as a rental. The 4 liter V6 was actually quite fast for a pickup and it handled bums and imperfections with ease. Virtually bullet proof by now!

It's sad how much the price of this basic truck, which was once the least expensive truck in America, has gone up just since 2017. In 2017, the base price of a Frontier S King Cab 4x2 was $18,390. The same model 2024 truck starts at $30,510 (an increase of over $12K or 65%). In 2017, you could outfit your Frontier S with a 4 cylinder engine and a 5 speed manual transmission; in 2024, you can only get a 6 cylinder and a 9 speed automatic. The destination charge has jumped from $960 in 2017 to $1510 in 2014, an increase of $550 or 57%. This is why so many people (myself included) would rather drive an older model than the most recent model available.

Thank you Tyler for such a "realistic" review. 😉 With the new Tacoma's skyrocketing in price I was wondering if this might be a good alternative for people that still want a simple truck that was affordable. But this just made me really appreciate my base 22' SR grade Tacoma even more. My truck is loaded compared to this. And I know it will last forever and hold it's resale value. So for now I think I'll just recommend a good used Tacoma for those that just want a simple truck that won't break the bank like the new 24' Tacoma's will. 👍

Looks like what I want in a truck except I'd rather have a physical key to both get into the vehicle and to start the engine (rather than a push button). My personal quirks are no CD player (no brands have those anymore), and why have a tachometer when you don't have a stick shift? I know those are minor, but making every possible feature electronic and/or software controlled for the 'hi-tech buzz' and no other reason are silly. The Frontier does less of it, but its still annoying.

A GDI engine is a poor choice. Port injection is cheaper and last longer then the scam that is gasoline direct injection. Carbon build up at 150k miles .... Come on man.

Remember boys and girls, that engine is DI only. Tacoma, even third gen, is port amd DI injected. Carbon buildup can occur with DI engines. Buyer be aware. You pay more for Tacoma but you get real reliability. Also, steering is ridiculously hard.
@Realistick
@Realistick 9 ай бұрын
You can navigate buildup with fuel induction services (not fuel additives) every 25k. It seems to reduce the issue so it never becomes a big problem but kudos to toyota for the d4s system that eliminates that extra bit of maintenance that most don’t do anyway!

I want to love the Frontier as a value option but Nissan's commitment to longevity is questionable. Best option for a cheap, durable new truck might still be a previous gen SR trim Taco. (If you can find one)

That used to be the way the first "aero" mirrors were designed 30 or so years ago. I haven't seen it done since though. I think it was a huge mistake for Nissan to do that in this day and age. Even my base SR Tacoma 4 cyl. 4x2 access cab came standard with power and heated mirrors.

It's not the cheap truck it used to be, but it is the cheapest truck to pack this kind of power and capability from the base level. All relative but it is a hard pill to swallow. I really miss the last 2019 models with the 4 cylinder and manual. This gen could really benefit from that.

I’m 5’4” and I own a new Frontier. Seating position is fantastic compared to the pre-2024 Tacoma. (I’ve driven both trucks). The Frontier’s view is high and commanding. Feels like a normal truck. My only gripe is the hood is long and square and it’s sometimes difficult to tell how close I am to something. As for the Tacoma - I felt like I was literally sitting on the floor of the truck with my legs straight out! Worst driving position I’ve experienced in ANY vehicle! Made for a miserable drive in a rented Taco traveling from AZ to CA and back.
