2024 Olympic Games: How is Paris preparing? | AFP

With just six months to go until the start of the Paris Olympic Games, the clock is ticking for the organising committee. Political bickering, ongoing grumbling about ticket prices and disruption to everyday life are souring the mood in the build-up to the Paris Olympics this July -- something organisers blame on typical French pessimism. Several recent announcements have led to a spike in negative publicity for the sporting mega-event which will start in just six months and draw a television audience of billions. Many Parisians were dismayed in December by news that transport ticket prices are set to double for the duration of the event and that they should work from home to free up seats on busy metros and buses. The unveiling of planned security measures led to claims some parts of the city would face Covid-style lockdowns, while controversy erupted about the environmental impact of a judges' tower at the surfing venue in French Polynesia. However, Paris 2024 organisers remain confident that sights such as beach volleyball in front of the Eiffel Tower, swimming in the river Seine, or the marathon through the capital's fabled streets will lift spirits once the flame is lit on 26 July.

The Chinese did not have a problem with this kind of logistics and neither did the Brits or the Brazilians. Tokyo was was way ahead of schedule until covid happened. Perhaps, the French along with their noted deludedness and incompetence should not have been awarded the Olympics. But, it's here and let's just hold our noses and deal with it. The Los Angeles Olympics will soon be here and help us forget that France ever happened. They can go back to squabbling over 1.7 Billion Euros with their endless strikes while we spend 12X as much in a far more dynamic and innovative city.

I live here, and it’s terrible, everything is on the construction, it’s a rated difficult to drive anywhere, they’re closing down roads, and I’m also Photographer, we can shoot anywhere. It will be a chaos , not fun, and not easy for us to move around. Metro stations will be fully closed down. And we can also take taxis. Or buses. we will have to walk or take bikes for kilometers 😵‍💫🤦🏻‍♀️ it will be a nightmare

What Paris is doing is nothing new for the Olympics. Historically, most Olympic host cities keep most of their venues. Athens and Rio are outliers. It's not building and spending money that's the problem. It's how cities are building and spending that money that's the problem. London is constantly hailed as one of the gold standards for how to host an Olympics despite building way more than Paris is, and still being the 2nd most expensive Olympics of all-time 12 years later at $14.9B. More than double what both Rio and Athens spent combined. Because London built and spent wisely, and actually had a post-Games plan, making the Games actually worth the cost. And they aren't alone either. Barcelona and Sydney, two other cities also hailed as model Olympic cities despite both spend more money than both Rio and Athens as well.

It seems that to organise OG in Paris is too risky, taking into account a current situation. Is IOC sleeping? They should be either cancelled, or transfer into more secure country, which would not have a problem to organise them in a short notice - eg Japan, China etc. Or to pospone OG 1, 2 years.
