I frequently goes to Paris (I am from Montreal, Québec). I was there at the peak of the media coverage about the so-called bed bug crisis. There was no crisis. Just slow news days. I was in Paris last October, when everybody was talking about bed bugs. Didn't see any in my hotel room, didn't see any in the the cinemas, didn't see any in the métro. This whole thing was blown out of proportion. In fact, the biggest problem in Paris remains worker strikes. There's always a strike or a protest somewhere in the city. But that never prevented me from enjoying my stays over the years. And another thing: Parisians aren't rude. If you're nice, pleasant, courteous, they will be nice, pleasant and courteous with you. Do not expect them to act like Americans do in America. They are Parisians and they are at home. Learn a few words in French, and you may surprised how nice Parisians can be with you! And besides, there are no other cities like Paris. The Haussmann-style buildings, the Opéra Garnier, the Seine at sunset, the joie de vivre à la française. Do not let imaginary bugs discourage you. Paris is a wonderful city.

Keir being all jumpy and giggly about the Eiffel Tower suggests this is his first time seeing it. And the athletes may have a "scrap of the Eiffel Tower," a glamorized symbol of oppression, in their medals. Fun fact: *reparations to slave owners* reportedly went into financing the Eiffel Tower, among others. If you find yourself with twelve toes or web feet, take a good guess why. [Hint: water pollution] Or, if you scratch yourself uncontrollably when heading home, ask yourself why. [Hint: bed bugs] 🙂

@@MrMattVerdier Haiti started paying "reparations" to France *by 1826* for losses incurred by slaveowners due to the revolution and in exchange for recognizing Haiti's independence. *In 1875,* Haiti reportedly took a loan from France, for which French investors and bankers requested a *40 percent* cut in debt payments. Ironically, such loans mostly paid Haiti's ever-increasing debt to France. At any rate, the payments toward the 1875 loan benefited the *Crédit Industriel et Commercial Bank* the most. This bank allegedly helped finance the construction of the Eiffel Tower: _Headquartered in Paris, controlled by French businessmen and aristocrats, the bank _*_took over_*_ Haiti's treasury operations, _*_charged a commission any time_*_ the Haitian government so much as deposited money or paid a bill, and delivered the profits to its shareholders in France. In 1894, a banner year, its _*_French investors earned more than_*_ the Haitian government's agricultural budget for the _*_entire_*_ country._ - Courtesy of New York Times, 2022.
