I’m so glad you brought up the True Detective connection, this is my new favorite conspiracy theory that starring in True Detective helps your chances at the Oscars. Not only did True Detective help Jodie Foster this year and Matthew McConaughey in 2015, but it goes deeper. Rachel McAdams got a surprise nomination for supporting actress in Spotlight the year she was a costar of True Detective AND Mahershala Ali won best supporting actor for Green Book the year he was the star of season 3 of True Detective. Coincidence? I think yes but given how conspiratorial True Detective is, I love this weird connection that seems to keep happening.

Oppenheimer for the win! Finally Christopher Nolan will get his Oscar. Barbie was a fun popcorn movie with way too over the top messaging no wonder the Academy isn't taking it too seriously. Maestro doesn't have a chance, too slow. I kept thinking when will he perform? in the 3rd act finally. Poor Things was very artsy and well acted. I didn't need to see all of Emma Stone or the too porno scenes. One graphic scene could have been okay and the rest suggested scenes. We felt shocked several times, all three of us. Still have to see; The Holdovers, American Fiction, Nyad, All of us Strangers and Anatomy of a Fall.

For clarity: I only think Lily Gladstone will win due to the trauma endured by her character because it reminds me of how Lupita Nyong'o won her Oscar for 12 YEARS A SLAVE. Emma Stone should win, IMO, because her role in POOR THINGS is so bold and complex.

The English Patient is a masterpiece. Braveheart has problems, certainly, but it’s beautifully shot and scored. Say what you want about Mel Gibson, the man is one helluva filmmaker. And that Alonso didn’t ever finish Gladiator is shameful. I just saw Claire Foy’s Letterboxd four favorites reel, and she chose Gladiator as one of her favorite films of all-time. I recently rewatched it, and I think Gladiator is probably the best-acted film of its kind ever made. As to The King’s Speech: I’ve probably seen it four times.

Also it’s the first ever special effects nom for Japan!! I was particularly happy for the Nyad ladies too , though neither of them stand a chance , AND for Ryan , not because it is unquestionably richly deserved but mostly because we ALL surely wanna see him perform at the ceremony !!

Re: The Color Purple. I remember seeing Taraji discuss in her interviews the difficulties of being a Black working actor. Then I heard (through gossip no direct source) that the cast didn't get the best treatment. Like lack of craft services and transportation to take them to and form set. I, too, have never seen Gladiator in its entirety. 😆You're not alone, Alonso. I, too am pulling for Ryan to perform I'm Just Ken a the Oscars. I don't think he'll do it. He gives shy vibes to me. LOL. He didn't perform City of Stars for La La Land. I think RDJ is a lock mostly because he won most of the other awards and more of an "overdue" thing. I like Gosling's performance but think there are more stronger performances. I won't be mad at him winning because it's nice to see. Billie's song definitely a lock.

I think that Ferrera and Blunt totally doesn't deserve their nominations...Penelope Cruz was like a 5 times better than both of them, same goes for Vanessa Kirby in Napoleon and Julianne Moore in May December... - And Ryan Gosling nomination? If that cartoonish (and it was funny) performance deserve Oscar nomination... than for example Jim Carrey deserved Oscar nomination for every third role he is been playing in his career (and he obviously was robbed for The Truman Show and Man on the Moon nomination)...Dominic Sessa, Dar Salim in The Covenant, even Charles Melton and this young boy/actor from Anatomy of a Fall are a lot better than Gosling/Ken role. And also - Braveheart was horrible? And Alonso agree?!?! WOW, for me it's a masterpiece of historic movie genre 10/10 ...I understand that's all subjective, but horrible? That's a totally hating for some reason or something else...

I asked this in the chat but I’m not sure if you guys saw it. Do we think the exclusion of Gerwig and Robbie could lead to something similar to what happened with the Ben Affleck film Argo back in 2013? Where he was overlooked for director and actor, and people were outraged and that narrative lasted long enough to get Argo to win best picture? I feel like we could be looking at a similar situation here…

Regarding the International Feature Film category, I do agree that the way they do it now is unfair, especially with the politics involved. On the other hand, if they take away the one film per country rule, I can't help but think that 90 % of the nominees would be from western Europe and/or Japan.

Don’t worry Alonso, with Kimmel hosting again, I doubt he would let Oppenheimer (a film with Matt Damon in it) win best picture. He might even swap what’s in the envelopes and make sure Oppenheimer gets wrongly announced as best picture and then make Nolan and the Oppenhomies say Barbie is the actual best picture winner.

I mean, the message of the Barbie movie is one thing but actually being good at acting is something unrelated. I mean Ryan was great, Margot was ok, also Ferrara was ok. I had fun watching it but it’s in no waaay a Best Picture candidate in my eyes with all due respect. My favorite movie of the year was Past Lives and was suprised Greta Lee and Celine Song didn’t get nominated; now that’s a sin!!

Absolutely adored American Fiction as a film. I really don't feel Sterling's character was fleshed out or got much to do at all. To me it was very one note, thinly written, and stereotypical. A ripped masc closeted man who got caught cheating by his wife and has an addiction problem. He contradicts himself by complaining about living in Tucson with college gays yet we then see the young twink lovers he's getting with. Like we get presented with a messy flawed gay man and then there's no exploring of all these issues/complexities of his life. He was funny and Sterling is a great actor, it is a fine performance that compliments the sublime Jeffrey Wright who has a fully fleshed out character. But I do not see how this garners a nomination when Dominic Sessa, Charles Melton, Milo Machado Graner among others, truly shine and have lasting impact. Really feels like a lot of "buddy buddy good will" because he's so beloved by many in the actor's guild.

Thanks for posting this; sorry i missed your live stream; appreciated those noting what got overlooked; liked the question about over-rated Best Picture winners; though it was indeed entertaining, i agree with Alonso about CODA; interesting that Napoleon got technical noms only, perhaps reflective of the truncated theatrical release which really undermined Joaquin Phoenix & Vanessa Kirby; we're going to hold judgement until Apple posts the 4 hour version; Oppenheimer's female roles are BOTH under-written; Florence Pugh's dialogue was deliberately arch; and what the heck was that surreal business of her seeminly nude draped on Oppenheimer during his security clearance session, with her looking out of frame to a downcast Emily Blunt; and even the female scientists that worked on the project are nameless, reduced to being cheerleaders during Oppenheimer's address after the project. Appparently, Christopher Nolan apologized to Pugh for under-writing her character. Greatly enjoyed Poor Things, despite unlikely content. Thanks again for re-posting!!!

Probably the two worst movies i’ve ever seen I don’t care if they’re a little well made or have decent casts they are so beyond offensive and cynical it’s nauseating to this day to even think about those films. Let alone the fact that they won best picture. Also can’t stand A Beautiful Mind, Slumdog Millionaire, Argo is fucking TERRIBLE and complete fiction despite selling itself as a true story, Green Book and Coda were so basic and surface level they honestly make total sense winning best picture despite being basically glorified disney channel original movies.
