For the first time ever I head over to the one and only overland expo west to see the new gear and rigs as of 2024. This is my opinion on the expo, if I feels it’s a worthy investment to attend and an overall walk around the fort Tuthill grounds.

I go to see the show and look at the $100k plus rigs but get excited when I can grab some camping body wipes from Shower Pouch. The "Overlanding" mark up on stuff is nuts. Been using the same Coleman stove for almost 4 decades. It doesn't have to be expensive or complicated. Great channel. Wish we would have bumped into you up there to say thanks for your efforts.👍

Its fun to just go and walk around. Went yesterday and got another bag from adventure tool company, a badurie camp oven. Mostly just go to get ideas and to go and do something. Sundays are usually the best since most vendor's offer discounts.

There is a KZbinr - 110 West Overland. They are based here in NM & they drive a RAV4 that they travel all over the Southwest & shoot videos of there adventures. It seems that it's mostly day trips for them but they post really good quality stuff. I've always enjoyed seeing overland events like this to find out what gear is available & to see how other people build their rigs. It really helps with ideas as to what is necessary & what isn't for myself. Thanks for the video. It's kinda fun to watch when your wife participates.

Camping on site is the awesome experience. I'm a solo traveler, but I will say that these expos are filled with people of the same cloth. I'm attending mountain west again this year, driving out from CT. I then explore out west for about a month. I did buy a new 270 awning last year for like $300 off. Highly recommend the camping experience.

I've always been curious about attending an "Overland" expo. Living in NM, there's probably a couple good ones within a day's drive or so. I'm probably like you, where I don't like to spend money on my rig to keep up with others. I have a few mods, and really just want to get out and use what I can, and determine what I need/want after trial and error. It's nice to see your wife get more involved in your content! Awesome video, man!

My wife and I went Friday (was a lot less crowded) and came to the same conclusion you did. I've attended 40,000+ 4-day conferences, but I also pooped out after about 4 hrs, Lol. We're just beginning, so we wanted to check out what all the buzz was about. Learned a lot but didn't buy anything either bc the same day deals weren't impressive and the number of things to look at was overwhelming. We didn't go for a second day, which Cody, is why we missed meeting you. We decided to check out a local trail on Saturday before heading back to Tucson. Btw, unless Toyota is totally focused on just selling Tacomas, 4Runners, Tundras and Landcruisers to the overlanding crowd, they should make you an Ambassadorshio since you're already proving what a Rav4 can do and could probably help them sell a ton of them. Looking forward to more good stuff from you brother!

Just got back too. Agree that the real show is in the camp ground. Lots of real rigs that get used. Some garage queens too. I have a truck that no vendor there sells things for. I go there to get ideas about how to build my rig (1994 Pathfinder) and I also like looking at the little stuff that makes packing my tiny rig more efficiently. Bought two Sidio plastic boxes for $80. Ordered an ignik firecan online after viewing it in person. That was all I bought after 3 days there. Only big purchase I am considering is an ALU-CAB tent. $4k seems reasonable for something of that quality. Would be funny to have a $4k tent on the vehicle I paid $1,600 for!

Looks cool to me. I dont know how much it was to get in and park but looks like fun. I am broke all the time too and work for a living. Those highly modified trucks are cool to look at but like you said they never take them out on the trail like countless other Tucson rigs I see on the road you can tell they never get out. Hey I like my clear coat too and my truck is stock with a camper shell but it does just fine and I try to take care of it. And my truck is 24 years old but it gets compliments all the time and didnt cost and arm and a leg. Simple 2000 gmc 1500 4x4 works great.

Well said, there was a load of stuff being sold to people for Overlanding (vehicle camping). I’m lucky to live in the land of milk and honey and freedom down under, where we can still buy a simple new four-wheel-drive Land Cruiser 78 Troopy and add a fridge, bed, toilet, In cooking setup with the most basic equipment. Instead of spending all the money, it’s about getting out there and doing it . You may notice my brand name this is because I’m an ex Africa Overland driver (1990’s) and European/Scandinavia camping adventure tour driver (1993 - 1998 ish).

Hi Cody! Finally got around to watching this video. LOL! Overland Expo. Huh... Just doesn't really appeal to me. But I like your channel and content, so I figured if you took the time to document it, I would at least support you and thank you for confirming what I knew all along about shows like this. It's just not for me. I can't see how fancy, expensive gear could improve my outdoor experience. I'm out there for adventure, exploration, great memories, vibing with nature, and really I see no need for anything more than I already have, which is a well maintained rig, gear, and base camp setup. Yeah, people might think my junk is ghetto...beat up, old fashioned, whatever. But I really only care about where it takes me and brings me back from. The rest is just lining someone else's pocket and emptying mine. Don't get me wrong, I like gear, I'm just not enamored by it. LOL @ "Use your Trucks"! Haha!

I went to OE East in 2015 which was my 1st introduction to more offroad Adventuring. Then in 2017 went when I was actually in the process of building my rig. I have not been to one since but would go if I am in the vicinity of one. So - as you pointed out - they are a GREAT place to go to get Ideas. I found some of the courses where good and spending time in the campground with like minded folks was fun as well. Lots of them shinny rigs get built for shows - Well to Show Off - I figure. If you would have walked to where the common folk are - ya might have got a way better flavor of the plethorah of rigs people bting to the show. Sometimes the real show is at camp. I went this year because I had some time off, lots of really neat and super expensive built out rigs. I camp out of the back of my 10 thousand dollar Tacoma. To me personally having a 100 or 300 thousand dollar rig with queen mattress and chefs kitchen is nice but totally defeats the entire purpose of camping. Also I paid 263 dollars for the admission which including 4 days of camping, I stayed just one day and one night, you can only see so many roof top tents and campers before it gets pretty old, glad I had a chance to check it out but I probably wouldn’t repeat

Everything you said was true, but there were several aspects of the show that you totally missed. The vendor "tradeshow" part is the least interesting to me. Way too much ego and way to little innovation. You won't find many real deals either, but if you walk around late on Sunday, you can get some deals on stuff the vendors don't want to pack up and move. All I bought this year was a few patches. The real innovation is in the DIY rigs that show up. There is actually a DIY section of the show that you didn't even visit. Most of these guys are down to earth and happy to share ideas with you. If you are planning a build, a visit to this show is gold. There are also great free classes on just about any subject you could imagine, from suspension upgrades to radio comms. These are taught by what are essentially volunteers, many of whom are extremely knowledgeable. Some of the best meetups with people happen after hours. Walking around for a few hours and looking at vendor displays doesn't reveal any of this. I would suggest you take the leap, and do the whole weekend next year. My guess is that you will come away with a whole new perspective
@Whitedogoverland
@Whitedogoverland 16 күн бұрын
I definitely missed out on the full experience not camping. I do have several friends who hangout in the camping section with a lot of the diy rigs, I stopped by a few but didn’t film was just catching up with friends. I've been 6 years in a row and just got back from this year. This will be my last mainly because I'm full-time and starting my drive to Argentina in June. My opinion is it's all Junk and extremely overpriced . I've never bought anything at the show. Being full-time, nothing at the show is something that I would carry with me as I start my world travels . The show is awesome. Don't get me wrong, but at the end of the day, it's overpriced junk. Example a ammo can fire pit for 300 bucks you can make for 25 bucks 😂😂😂 and do you really need it in the first place. Ppl get low quality recovery gear from Rhino China....I mean Rhino USA that WILL fail. Might be the cheapest items money wise at the show but recovery gear I don't get cheap on, especially since I go extremely remote for weeks.
