Just wanted to take a moment and thank everyone for the incredible conversation in these comments, this is what makes the planner community so great! I also want to add that this video or any opinion is NOT targeted at any shops whatsoever. Period. Trends come and go and shops do their best to offer a variety of products that cater to different planning styles and we should continue to support them ! Thank you as always for the continued love and support! ❤️

Please put up the polls on KZbin for those who refuse to use IG and FB. I refuse to use these platforms from not seeing my nieces wedding pictures, but just things that made me angry. 3 days after the wedding, and I am overseas, I still had not seen them, so I asked if some were posted, and I got told a lot went up the day of the wedding.

All very interesting. One day you wake up and realize how the over-abundance of supplies and accessories causes more overwhelm than joy. ONE year, I stayed in one planner all year. It was the best Planner season I’ve had since I started.

Yes! That is how I feel...overwhelmed. I am getting back to the JOY of less and it feels good!

I think a lot of the “less” comes because the cost of everything else has gone up. It’s so expensive to buy food or go out that I now look at purchasing planner stuff or craft stuff in general like “I could buy this or I could go do something fun with my family.” So I choose to use my stash, which to be honest is way more than I could use in a year anyway. 😂

I agree with this! I’m on a debt payoff journey for 2024 so I’m totally using what I have. I also hate waste. I also fell guilty of getting too many planners and in 2025, I’m going back to two. My catch all and my budget. That’s it. Life is too expensive right now and having to write in too many planners, nah. I just need my basics and off I go.

I do love the Happy Planner. I have been with them for 10 years. I tried to journal in a bound book and I could not do it. I skipped on days. I just this bound book as a brain dump for my writing now.

I also think the Pandemic and being at home all the time really increased no-white-space planning. People needed something to do, and it was depressing looking at blank planner spreads.

I was forced to work on my thesis, even though other students were just given dispensation for the whole covid period. So, I would have loved more blank spreads during covid. Try working on a thesis, during the lockdown in the states, and your university is overseas and you couldn’t get back there for 6 months.

All of this! After doing some spring cleaning this year, I was literally sickened by the amount of planner stuff I was not using. My son is off to college to study Environmental Science and Sustainability and he had to give me some hard truths about my overconsumption of planner supplies. I have since really scaled back on my purchases. I am definitely trending toward just one planner and maybe a companion notebook for 2024. Do I miss the cute sticker kits? Maybe. Am I less organized now? No. I'm actually way more productive with everything in one place.
@SIMulatedSara Жыл бұрын
Over-consumption was something that struck me immediately when I joined the planner community. I studied ecology and sustainability in for my undergrad, and I was truly shocked to see the massive amounts of just.... stuff. Over-consumption is something that I feel like the planner community (unintentionally) preaches. It takes vulnerability for you to really take what your son said to heart, and make changes that feel good for you. Glad to hear you're more peaceful with your planning now, that's what we're all working towards!

I agree with this so much!! My very first planners were Happy Planner. I got so excited and bought all the stickers. But then I realized that I just don’t have the time to customize every weekly spread and it’s too expensive for me to buy the supplies. Now I’m looking at an Erin Condren softbound A5 for 2024. Love the portability and how simple it is.
@apayne205 Жыл бұрын
I totally agree that functional planning is being simplified accross the board. I think we should also consider planning to be functional/efficient vs planning as a hobby. For example, I use A6 rings to functionally plan my life, but I like to memory plan, I like to journal with planning supplies. So I may buy some pretty things because it is part of my hobby, but not purchase kits or “functional” items because functionally, I just use pen and graph paper 🙂

I have never, ever, ever been able to use more than 1 planner. I have 1 and only 1 for every year and absolutely everything goes in there. I would definitely get way too much anxiety trying to keep up with everything. Being over whelmed and then probably just end up using one planner and I guess because of my style of planning I have been using disc bound planner for about 8 years. Because its so friendly if I needed to add a section or remove them if I no longer needed it.
@fran_mendez_18 Жыл бұрын
I am completely with you regarding the minimalism in planning. Most of the time I stick with only one planner per year, but I used to use a lot of stuff to plan: stickers and all the things. I have adopted the book-bound, pen and highlighter with minimal stickers (only because I want to use what I have). And let me tell you, this change has been liberating!

I’d like to add my perspective as an student living in finland! Finland has it’s own planner/journaling/junk journaling community mostly in Facebook. When I joined the community, happy planner was really in and I feel that people bought so much more things. Like you had to have 5-15 sticker books and then all of the premium washi tape like erin condren etc. However most of the people in those groups are not the most wealthy and in the past years i feel that more people are using what they have buying mostly cheap things but saving money for example the hobonichi planner. I myself as a broke student have done that and I love to look back at my self made journal with little washi and some stickers from childhood. Of course over the years we now have our own stationery shops as well and it’s grate because now we can at least get some of the nice things out there. Few years back it was really hard because the shipping is so costly!

This has been the best journal vid with value! I was swept up initially with fomo. Until I became anxious with the task of storing everything . If it is packed away it isn't used and that won't do. I have recently joined a journaling meetup and it is so great to try a little this and that when shared versus buying all the latest washi ,stickers and so on. It reaffirms I want my journal to be a representation of me and not the other 400 journals using the same stickers ( no disrespect to the creatives making beautiful items) I now enjoy using my little hoard and not making things so precious. I agree, bound is the so nice! I have rings and spiral but was gifted a Hobonichi and the Flat life was everything. lol I didn't know I needed a planner with this layout. Again, your content was so on point!

Very good thoughts! It’s very important to use your stash! And to figure out what your must haves are! I know I love paper and stamping so that stuff isn’t going away for me! I like stickers for important things or my vision boards but I’m a Tombow and dot marker girl. I use fitness and self care stickers when I need extra motivation and I really like month / day and goals / action header stickers for things that repeat throughout my planner because I like the consistency of it. I set that all up when I move into my planner every year. If had beautiful handwriting, I would probably just write it tho honestly.

I've always been a more functional planner person. It's taken me a few years to figure out what system works for me, but my goal has ALWAYS been function. Over the years, I've learned that I do best with a hybrid system: digital planning for schedules and appointments, and a paper planner for to-do lists. 2024, I'm moving into my EC Compact Vertical and I'm SO excited. (I've been trialing the layout since October and it's just what I need). [I'm still a coil person; I like having my planner open on my planner stand so I don't forget about things]

Definitely agree when it comes to kits! I just got back into planning and was thrilled about all the kits available because I’m not super artistic. Fun video! I agree other than coils. Even though I switched to rings this year, I don't think coils are going anywhere - like you said even ML switched to coil. Agree 100% will the sticker for everything. I am currently debating getting rid of all of those stickers. I still like a simple 1/4 box for events so I can move it around if something gets rescheduled. It also helps it stand out for me more than pen alone. The no white space planning has always blown my mind. I could never - my brain couldn't handle all that stimulation.

I agree with most of the trends. I never thought I would use a bound planner, but in 2022 I tried some and am in love! The weeks is my everything planner. I still use Jesenia Printables undated PW rings daily timed inserts from 3 years ago. I still love my same style of planning (didn’t really plan last year but reviving it this year).. I was a little bit sad to see how many shops have shuttered their doors, and how difficult it is to find like a three page mini kit from most of the shops. Some of them are only offering Hobonichi weeks and cousin kits. I do have a ton of individual sticker sheets for all different types of occasions and activities that I am reaching for but I still do like to find the less expensive kits to use each each week. I do enjoy looking at all different types of planning content, but I just really love the style that has worked for me and I still love how it looks and it gives me relaxation time to set up my planner for the week ahead. I have such a nostalgia for the 2017 to 2019 era! I never did the no white space planning. I remember someone in specific who literally covered every sliver of white on the page and to me I could not fathom that at the time even lol

I totally agree. I started from not planning at all and ended up with all kinds of planners, Bujo, stickers, washi, etc. I was shocked when I realized how much waste of time and money I had made. It was a beautiful journey that brought me a lot of joy and I learned a lot, but from now on I will stop this crazy madness. Once I become a planner girl, I can't go back to "nothing" so for next year I have only one Midori Poket Diary planner, b6, ready structured by months and weeks, ready decorated and for daily appointments at work/life I have most simple & cheap but beautiful hourly planner ... that's all folks! Happy Holidays!! Happy Wisely Planning!!

I think that the brick and mortar stores are going that direction as well as there aren’t near as many planner supplies there anymore which means that less are buying them. I think it’s time for me to use what I have and not spend more money on things that I probably already have some of already.

I hear this! I didn't buy a lot initially in my journey, and finally allowed myself to go on sort of a 'spree' earlier this fall, as I had never really LET myself buy fun stickers or washi as it's my first year really in the 'planner community.' Honestly, I'm glad I did because now I know what I ACTUALLY am going to use - and now I can be more discerning with my purchases in the future. :) Planning to shop my stash more in 2024. My rule is if it doesn't currently fit in my desk area, I don't need anymore 😅

Loved this video! Yes to the trends you mention. I like one primary planner....It took me a few years to figure out that its not efficient for me to write stuff in more than one notebook. I might as well go back to mountains of sticky notes, which is what I did before I found the EC planners in 2018. Happily spent 2023 in the Hobonichi Cousin and will in 2024 also. I love the flexibility and gobs of room. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and "survey results". Most enjoyable. And we all probably could do with a little more 'planner / supplies no spend' days....

One trend I see and do is creating your own pages as opposed to buying already made pages. I ended up using word to design pages because there wasn't anything out there I wanted. And I was able to print them off free at the library. There are also free printable you can copy right off the internet.

Love this video... I've just found your channel. I used to use Franklin Covey. That's right. Strictly for work and it was so costly. When I saw the lady drop her Palm Pilot in the Franklin Covey store and bust out crying like life would end because she just killed her device, I said I'd never get one of those! But then I got a Blackberry and several types of planners I didn't stick with. I've always been a paper list girl so when I discovered Happy Planner KZbin videos that used a bunch of stickers, this scrapbooker lost her little sticker mind. But I finally tried a Hobonichi Weeks. I can list till my heart is content AND it will fit in whatever purse with my big iPhone. Yes, the stickers still tempt me but I'm walking away. I have enough sticker books to last me a lifetime now if I feel so inclined. Plus those things are like $22 dollars now! That's a large fries at Five Guys LOL.

I also prefer TCMC character stickers and I get a monthly journaling kit from one store. I’m seeing happy planners and rings coming back at the moment. We have come full circle! It’s mind scrambling how many shops are offering various bound books. I just went back to rings and it’s a relief to have the flexibility of putting new things in and out, moving where things are for little to no cost. And I've see stickers for sale, but had no idea how to use them... I didn't know that people covered the date numbers, days of the week, etc! (I guess those are the page kits that you mentioned...) Not what people see from influencers per day but do what makes u happy. So much bandwagon ideas and abandoning what makes you happy. I wish planner peace amongst all for 2024! Thx for the video!

Ring planners are allllllll over IG at the moment, so many people swapping to them for 2024, but I remember the stress of inserts on discs and trying a million different ones and taking them out and replacing them because of a mistake. I enjoy book bound planners because I spend my time planning or journaling and not swapping and changing everything all the time and stressing if they aren’t perfect.

I totally agree with the less blank space and sticker usage for the past 2 years I had a passion planner and while it helped me have written down goals there were months on end I didn’t use it. I always highlighted and decorated with stickers so it wasn’t so sad looking but now that I’m in nursing school I really don’t have time to decorate and it became something I avoided doing instead of the self care time it used to be. So now I’m trying a new planner made by an artist that has artwork on every page so I don’t feel the need to make it aesthetic cause it already is! I’m gonna stick with pen and highlighters with maybe some stickers when I feel like it. I love that I’m removing the pressure from myself to make decorative and aesthetic spreads. I don’t got time for that lol

Very interesting! I do feel like the collective consciousness of the planner community has moved through an experimentation stage and is now definitely streamlining and simplifying our systems with more self-awareness - which may or may not mean a change to their stacks or style. Like, now that I know how I need to use stickers and/or pens to plan for how my brain actually works I don't feel like I'm missing something shiny over there anymore! I have a better sense of how I can use what I have. I can look at a launch and know whether they're actually marketing TO ME or not. I think the economy (!!!) and the way social media has us completely overstimulated and overwhelmed has everyone craving more simplicity.

I totally agree with less planner hopping. I think the last couple of years, people were trying to figure out what was going to work, so they switched planners mid-year or had a big planner stack. Now that they (and I) have figured out what works best, we can just buy what we need. For me, that’s an Agendio Planner (that has monthly, weekly, and daily spreads) and an Archer & Olive Bujo for journaling and memory keeping. Thanks for the video!

I've learned a lot of what works for you is what counts... I just got myself a simple binder to create my own planning system, because now I cannot justify spending so much money on something that I may or may not be using.. I'd rather create what works for me. 😍

I have spent weeks agonizing over my system to make sure I don’t overspend. Trying to think through the pros & cons/ all the possible set ups. I even bought just a blank Sterling Ink notebook to draw out similar spreads to see if I really wanted to buy the full year books. I’m switching from a digital (which was a big upfront cost for the iPad but sooo cheap in the end) to an analog system and the rabbit hole is DEEP!

Oh Julie what a wonderful truthful video. Yes on the weekly kits for 52 weeks $$$$$$$$$. More than I want in my Planner. Perhaps this will be the year that we all have more $$$$ in our wallets and less $ spent on a tool we all love so much. 💞
@luc_is_here Жыл бұрын
I don't think weekly kits will go away but I think we will see less intense usage/the kits spread out over multiple weeks. As someone in Australia, it's never been cost-effective for me to buy a kit to only use it on one week.

Great video Julie! I agree with the over consumption. I am in a Happy Planner for 2023 and moving into a Hobonichi for 2024. Years ago I would buy all the things and felt SO overwhelmed with all the stuff I had! I ended up selling everything. My current Happy Planner is just ink with a few stickers but mostly quite simple which is how I want my life to be in general.

New subscriber here 🙂 I loved this video! There are a lot of things I agree with. I have fallen victim to the overconsumption in the past and it is something I have been working on. I look at the vast amount of Tombows that I never use, the washi tapes I thought I had to have but don't love, alllllll the notebooks. Okay, I have to admit, I love notebooks and tend to have them on hand for various things. I did the planner hopping thing a bit at the beginning of 2023 and in the last half, I have settled in my Cousin Avec. It truly is my brain on paper and fits all of my needs (work full time, full-time student, mom, wife, house to run, etc). I do have a supplement book on the side for when I need a blank page (collections, etc) and I love the Hobonichi notebook for this. One thing I can't get past is the planner stacks! I am completely shocked seeing the stacks that others have. The continuous planner hopping that happens is just exhausting. And expensive. I think people feel FOMO. A popular KZbinr that I follow switched (again) and the comments from her followers were along the lines of, "Now I need this type of book!" I do admit, I enjoy the stickers and kits. I will make the occasional purchase from TCMC and do love her washi (her washi is so cute and I love to use it) and I do have some kits lined up, but I have started going with purchasing printables that I can buy once and print as many times as I want on my Cricut. It works great and it is cheaper. I am definitely more about function over form and planning is first, stickers are second, but I do like to look back over my Avec from July and see how my year evolved and the stickers to tell the story a bit. I see the fun in that, haha! I think your video was well presented and you laid out everything well! Thank you for sharing! Looking forward to your content!! 🥰

I agree with everything you said! This year has been pure chaos for me, planner wise, and I'm just over it. It's stressful to planner hop and have info in a million books and never know where anything is! But I started 2023 in one book and THAT obviously didn't work. 😆 So I'm still thinking through my system. LOVE the trend toward journaling stickers.

L O L - i just joined the planner community this after being so bored with hobo (after almost a decade) I came to see what else was out there. I am super happy I did - after experimenting with a LOT of things, I ended up with a A5 discbound plum paper planner, that I have turned into a larger planning system. I can decorate my dashboard pages with deco stickers to my hearts delight, and have more 'pen and paper' type sections as well. This has been my only planner once I decided, and i have bought the same for 2024. I might end up with a weeks for travel, but haven't decided yet. Everything I own fits on a single craft cart, and I plan to keep it that way! Fun video, thanks!

I totally agree with using your planner in how you need it for that day or week. I'm in a Hobonichi Cousin as well, and each week is different from the next. I have a basic frame to how I like to set up my daily pages, but for instance, I've had a lot more travel this last year so those daily pages might just have one or two elements from my usual set up and then be memory keeping or some quick thoughts of things I want to expand on in my journal when I get home. I find having a framework of how I like to do things (despite what people on Instagram or Reddit might tell me is the correct way to use my Hobonichi), actually gives me the freedom to mess around it in for what I need that day.

I'm also in a Hobonichi cousin and I have a similar mindset. I have a framework, but I omit or add sections when I need them. I love the daily pages for that reason.

Great discussion!!!! I am sickened by the amount of money I have spent - and wasted - on totally nonsensical planner supplies!! I’ve bought more planner “stuff” than I could ever use!! I’ll be making some hard cuts to what I spend in 2024! Minimal planning will be the direction I’m going for sure! I will be cleaning out my planner supplies and donating a ton of it!! Just looking at all of it makes me nauseous and gives me too much anxiety! Thanks for sharing!! 🙏🏻🇺🇸👍🏻🍂🍁

I never understood the stacks of planners. In the late 90's I started with a Franklin Covey planner and that system was for both business and personal in one planner. I think it's easier knowing what you need to do without confusion. That is what I like about the ring system and the ability to add or decrease pages. That said, I am at a point in my life that in 2024 I am trying the Plum Paper Vertical Goal Planner. I tend to use post-its lined pads for any daily stuff or lists that are extra and stick them in my planner

I bought a 2023 planner for 2024 that i redated that way it's cheaper and it avoids the company to throw a perfectly good planner but i wanted a weekly hobonichi but wasnt sure it was my thing, remembered i had diy tiny booklet the size of the hoboweekly so i'm gonna test if i like that format with something i already had.

I jumped back into paper planning when it was all about the dollar spot post it’s and notepads and Washi and I pulled out my old Franklin Covey desk size ring planner and went for it. Years later I donated BOXES full of notepads, post it’s, washi, page flags, colored gel pens & markers to local elementary school teachers. No way one person could have used that stuff in a lifetime! I still have a few rolls of washi and quite a pen & highlighter/brush pen collection, but I am USING what I have daily. I have a Silhouette Cameo, so I only design my own simple stickers or occasionally purchase a beautiful printable kit when the artwork really speaks to me and I can choose to NOT print the boxes, etc. I’m loving my pocket sized Moleskine planner & notebook that I can take everywhere and will stick with that in 2024. But, I do have a a6 Hobonichi Plain notebook on the way because I really do want to try the Tomoe River paper. Can never see myself in anything bigger than an a6 moving forward, though. It has to go with me or I might as well stick to digital.

I still love watching ya’ll decorate your planners to the hilt. But, I’ve moved onto my Plum Paper Vertical Priorities for my daily use and my Plum Paper Horizontal Priorities for my Reading Journal. Since retirement I’m reading 200+ books a year. So I do use Peanut Butter Taco stickers on every page. But they are geared toward book types, not kits. And they are bright primary colors. Color makes my heart sing. I also bought a budget planner designed by SaraMarieStickers since I learned my pension budgeting from her system. I think that planner will be more cost effective than buying an EC Monthly Planner and buying stickers to set up every page. This system has really helped me managed my money, so I consider it money well spent. My sticker purchases seem to be limited to text only. Not cheap, but time savings. Now for the shocker. I started out as a Happy Planner girl and love the fact that my PPP are all punched for disk use. You can’t take the disks away from a Happy Planner girl! 😂

That’s why I went digital in my planning. Stickers are reusable and way less stuff I have everything with the tablet and stylus. I calculated the costs for me as well and it’s about 3/4ths less than paper planning for me. I do miss paper for the feel.

Great video! I love seeing people do creative things with their planners, but that doesn’t need to be stickers. Pen and paper, some highlights and underlining or drawing, mementos or shredded magazine pieces…so many options without pricey sticker kits. And, I love the Tomoe River paper and I wonder if the trend toward bound planners is the quality and the design of immediately being able to lay them flat, similar to a ringed planner but in a prettier design.
