We had a manual spyder a couple of years ago. Such a great car to drive! Enjoy it!

Had a 981s (PDK) - Fantastic gearbox and car here in Australia. Just upgraded to a 718 GTS (manual). More fantastic gearbox and car. Yeah the 718 is better. Production ends in September on this classic.

Porsche initially compromised the 718 with the 2.0 and 2.5 engines, and later, the OPF-restricted 4.0 attempted to salvage what it could. However, a 3.8 981 Spyder or GT4, or even a 3.4 GTS will sound vastly superior.

They didn't compromise them at all, performance wise they were faster than the equivalent 981 cars and more fuel efficient. If all you care about is sound sure.

@@X50505 Sound is an essential part of the driving experience, especially for a weekend fun car. The naturally aspirated engines of the 981 series, particularly in the 3.8 Spyder, GT4, and 3.4 GTS, provide a raw and visceral sound that the turbocharged engines in the 718 simply can’t match, despite their performance gains. Let’s talk numbers: the 981 series (2012-2016) was highly successful, with Porsche selling over 10,000 Boxsters and more than 8,000 Caymans worldwide in 2013 alone. When the 718 series was introduced in 2016, there was a noticeable dip in sales compared to the 981, with around 9,000 Boxsters and 7,000 Caymans sold globally in 2017, reflecting less enthusiasm, likely due to the switch to turbocharged four-cylinder engines. Moreover, the market has spoken. Used 981 models often command higher prices than their 718 counterparts. This appreciation is not just nostalgia; it’s about the overall driving experience, where sound plays a critical role. Porsche even responded to criticism by introducing the 4.0-liter six-cylinder in the 718, acknowledging the importance of a more engaging and emotionally satisfying powertrain, which was lacking in the initial 718 models. In conclusion, while the 718 might outperform the 981 on paper, the 981’s superior sound and the emotional connection it creates are why it’s more appreciated by enthusiasts and commands higher prices in the used market. Performance metrics are important, but they aren’t everything when it comes to a car that’s meant to be enjoyed, not just driven.

An OAP exhaust is a quick remedy for the sound you’re seeking and makes the 718 4.0 a vastly superior car in every way.

The problem with ALL Cayman/Boxters is that they only had two/three speed gearbox. First, second and "highway". The rest is USELESS. The long gearing kill the experience. 😮💨

Great sounding car but far cry from the theatrical masterpiece of the 981 - that sense of occasion will be difficult to ever replicate in a modern car. Sure the 4.0 is the better car but its soul has been somewhat tamed.

Delete the OPF and the soul comes right back.
