Land Rover started building SUVs long before they became rolling fashion accessories. But in 2018 when they were looking to expand their Range Rover lineup, they actually turned to Jaguar for a little help, basing their new Velar on Jag’s F-Pace. Well, it’s not time for an all-new Velar just yet, but they’re making sure this one stays fresh with a host of updates for ’24!

"Oh cool! Having to navigate menus on a touchscreen to turn on heated seats is so convenient and intuitive. " -Literally no one ever.

^^^ Boomer comment right here. Or someone that's only used touchscreens on a sub $50K vehicle.

@@chifineart as someone who has used touchscreens on a brand new Mercedes GLS, they're very "polarizing", for lack of a better word. In my opinion I would much rather take a dash loaded with buttons instead of a touchscreen doing everything, but I do understand how people use them. That being said, I don't think they're a very good (or safe) idea.

I owned a Certified Pre Owned 2018 Velar R-Dynamic HSE that I bought from Land Rover in Huntington, NY for about 3 years. Gorgeous car but, my GOD, what a POS. Thirteen unscheduled trips to the dealership in about 36 months for all kinds of failures, including the differential (I counted them up in contemplation of a Lemon Law claim). The last straw was when it suddenly developed a side-to-side rocking motion when banking left at highway speeds and I felt unsafe driving it. While I was trying to get that drivability issue worked out (two dealers replicated it, but never could diagnose it), one of the front parking sensors started beeping phantom proximity warnings. The dealership changed the parking sensor, but the problem persisted. I finally sold it to a Land Rover dealership in Albany, NY (no way I was going to sell it privately and stick someone with that jalopee).

When the Velar was first introduced, it legitimately looked like" the future" - here was a sleek vehicle with flush windows and trim, a setback greenhouse and a very sexy contour...it made every other SUV look old.

Hey Motor Week, be honest. Did anything stop working on the Velar during your testing, or was it problem free?

You’re never going to know. The wheels could be falling off the vehicle and MW would tell you the ride is acceptable.

that new infotainment screen is the biggest downgrade ever!! the old one had such unique look with the dials in the screen. This looks like a cheap cost cutting glued on tablet. what a let down

It is all about cutting costs and allowing undeveloped products to get pushed out and patched later. Touchscreens are the worst thing to happen to automotive interors since they stopped making comfortable seats.

Bought a 2018 velar from a dealer in Albany, got it for a steal, the salesman told me the ex owner had early onset dementia and didn't know how to drive anymore. R dynamic HSE it's been 100% reliable best car I've owned. Feel a bit sorry for the old guy..😢

When I hear Range Rover I think of the big full-size Rangie. When I hear Mercedes I think of the S-Class sedan.

It looks the same as it did when it debuted. It's always been beautiful. But the dynamicism is left bereft of any actual sporting character. Due to reliablity. Also, it starts at 62K, and there are far more options that are worth their price to choose from.

1:51 the all-red taillights with brake/turn signal combination lamps are unacceptable and need to be illegal. I don't understand how the US allows it and why non-US manufacturers downgrade their taillights to this substandard. This Velar's taillights aren't like this in its motherland so why the downgrade to these inferior, less effective and ambiguous taillights? I don't get it.
@mbox314

I have heard this argument before and I have never noticed orange turn signals to be any more noticeable or easier to interpet than all red lights. I feel there is a popular notion that everything the europeans do should be the standard in North America.

I've noticed that the Euro and Asian manufacturers are starting to apply this trend. Personally, i think it makes the same car less elegant along with safety reasons.
