Range Rover has had its share of problems in the past but is that terrible reputation for reliability still deserved? MotoMan attempts to answer that question by living with the updated for 2024 mild hybrid Range Rover Velar P400 SE. He takes the learning from the Range Rover Velar and compares it against real world data from @landrover and Range Rover owners. The answer may surprise you.

The fact of the matter is that Land Rover still score yearly low when it comes to reliability, build quality etc according to Consumer Reports and JD Power. Back in 2021 Land Rover’s CEO admitted they have a reliability/quality issue and he vowed to tackle this. That CEO stepped down last year 😂.

Fact is JLR is no longer lapped by the rest of the industry when it comes to reliability and durability scores. They are usually last if Maserati is not included but they have closed the gap.

Also, those reliability surveys are mostly of older models. This latest generation (of the RR and RRS anyway) has been very encouraging so far.

@@Gandrewjm Encouraging by who?. The 2024 Consumer Reports and JD Power reliability scores has them dead last or in the bottom 4. Chrysler however went disastrously down below LR and below Alpha Romeo. That said I really love the Defender and I'm trying to decide if I'm up to the task of dealing with potential issues again. My previous 3 LR products were abysmal, but the last one, an Evoque 2014 was horrendous. (10 years ago).

@@ggolds5 As I said, those reliability surveys are mostly of older models, so the same problems, of the same vehicles, are reported year, after year, after year...... The NEWER models starting with the 2022 RR have been reporting fewer problems per model year compared to previous years. This is encouraging for the brand and if they keep it up, it should result in a gradual climb in reliability rankings. I have some experience in that my dad and my uncle have always owned RR vehicles without any issues. Personally I have never owned one for myself and I was planning to buy a current generation RRS, but the insanely long wait periods for delivery made me change my mind. I'll try again when JLR's production catches up to the huge demand, and the wait period is more reasonable.

Do you have the 4cyl by any chance? I haven't heard of a turbo going bad on the 6cyl nor the supercharger on the 8. The 4cyl natural power ain't great, so people tend to push the turbo way harder than they should to get it to up and go.

I will never buy another Land Rover product. Had 2021 Evoque and 2023 Velar, both were disasters. They were under warranty but they spent more time at the dealership than in my driveway. What baffles me is they seem to be clueless as the fact that it’s hurting their reputation because both the reality and perception of unreliability Is now with them like a badge.

I had an LR4 for ten years and it was mostly reliable until the 70k mile mark. Between then and when I sold it with 95k miles, I put in nearly ten grand into fixing it. I had a Discovery 5 for five years and that was dead reliable - not a single issue. I’ve had my 2021 Defender P300 for three years now and the only thing that broke was the computer for the fuel pump, and that broke at 1500 miles. I’m now at 32k and it’s been pretty much flawless. I’ve put 144k miles on my Range Rover Sport Supercharged and love it. I’ve made it to sales appointments through Texas flooding, slightly off roads through muddy medians, and through Colorado snow storms. I’ve always arrived on time with little body load. Sure it has its issues, but still well worth it. Previously owned 2 4Runners and just wish they had more power and better driving dynamics. To me, the RR Sport has the solid drive and off road feel of a 4x4 4Runner limited, but significantly more power (0-60 in less than 5 seconds), better suspension, and luxury ride.

My dad and uncle have had various RR vehicles, over the past 20+ years, without any major issues. They rarely go off road and never miss a servicing date. Whereas a friend had serious engine problems with a RR he purchased back in 2012, although he admits to pushing it maybe too hard in the first 1k miles of ownership. I really like the latest generation of the RRS but the 10 month waiting period (now up to 18 months I'm told) was a deal breaker for me. I'll hold on to my aging GLE for a while longer and see if RRS availability improves.

Have had a Range Rover Sport Supercharged for 6 years now. Nothing catastrophic but lots of little things. Certainly reliable enough. As with any high-end vehicle, the repair/maintenance cost is 3 - 4 times a non-luxury vehicle. Two main things that contribute to this bad rap of reliability: 1. It has a lot of leading edge tech for its day so lots more (especially electronics) to go wrong. 2. It has a lot of sensors for everything and so if something is even slightly wrong, it'll let you know, unlike many simpler cars that won't let you know and you're blissfully unaware. I would always recommend owning a second car (ideally a simpler one) if you own a Range Rover, for when things inevitably go awry. All that being said, I would never recommend them to anybody but I absolutely love mine and will continue to buy them and maintain them.

Here’s an owners perspective: I have owned 4 over the last 15 years. The worst was my 2001 P38 with 4.6. That car was a pig and seriously unreliable, though it never left me stranded. The last three I owned were all 5.0 Supercharged and full size RR’s. I have put on average 80k miles on each… and I’ve never had any major failures. I always opt to extend my warranty just in case but nothing major has ever been an issue. The last model (2019 LWB) had a bad motor mount and control arm bushings at 50k miles. Would have been $4k repair but warranty covered it. Otherwise I’ve been very happy with each I owned and really enjoyed piloting them. I would get another but pricing is high so I will wait to find a nice CPO in a couple of years. In other news, my Taycan 4S has been extremely unreliable and spends way too much time at the dealer for service. Again, never had to have it towed… but way too many small annoying things. Luxury cars can be a bit finicky 😅

Drivetrain bearings are getting noisy... but might last for a while. Minor electrical issues in the interior (touch switches misbehaving) but no major electrical issues. But all of this being said -- the car drives fantastic after all this time, and the 95k miles it has are very hard up/down the mountains miles. Almost no freeway. I have a Velar with apparently the most unreliable engine, the 2.0L diesel ingenium unit. I’ve done nearly 50k miles in it so far without one hitch. Never had to visit the dealer for anything. The only caveat is that outside of the US JLR suggest 21,000 mile oil change intervals and it’s the owners that try to stretch them that far whom seem to start having issues with their cars as they approach 60-80k miles. I have personally changed the oil and serviced the car annually, or every 10,000 miles and so far so good.

@MotoManTV 3 ай бұрын
Had no idea but from what I am seeing in the comments, MANY folks have run into this problem. We have a similar problem with some Kias here in the US. The lower end models have proven to be very easy to steal. Kia looks to be proactive on it by working with the car insurers here for a solution to keep rates on what is intended to be a relatively affordable car palatable. Teslas have a similar problem for a different reason: If they get hit, most of them are written off because body parts and/or the cost aluminum work far exceed the value of the car. This has driven the cost of cover on all Teslas up - to the point that Tesla had to step in with a solution.

Pretty accurate. The video driving review on the Consumer Reports on line is very good. However, they still say brand reliability is the lowest. Every one rates worse than average with the "would you buy it again" score as low. I love the Defender but still can't seem to convince myself that it's reliable. My previous 3 LR's were awful. Oddly Chrysler in the current Consumer Reports auto issue rated lowest below Land Rover. That's a first. Jeep, LR, Jaguar, Alpha Romeo, at the bottom. I've had 7 Jeep Wranglers , the last 3 were excellent so not sure what to say about that.

JLR vehicles have got more reliable in recent years , although there was only one way to go from last on the list , they are no longer the worst for dependability & are now much the same as German & some Stellantis group rivals , unfortunately it will take a long time to change the publics perception due to exaggerated & consistent criticism often to generate extra views on social media , it ends up being blown out of proportion , the myth that all Toyotas are reliable & JLR vehicles are junk is just not true , for the record , these reliability surveys often count a glitchy infotainment screen the same as being stranded with an engine breakdown which is misleading.

Nope, i own 3, own not lease or rent. And they have been amazing, 2012 evoque, 2020 velar, and a 2017 sport autobiography. Only minor problems. Range rover are hugely underrated, everyone who rode or drove one of them was amazed. They are amazing cars. For the same price range rover are miles better. People think my 2012 evoque is a 2019 model year. Self park, 360 camera, 19 speakers, and many more. Again, amazing cars

I'd buy any JLR product with the AJ-Series V8 (or V6) engine as that thing has stood the test of time, and its only poor maintenance or failed water pumps (that people keep driving), that break that engine. The transmissions are all ZF, bulletproof going back to the 1990s. The new BMW V8s or the 4-Cyl Ingenium or the new I-6, no I will not buy one of those. The BMW is a known failure point at 60,000 miles or more, and the others have not been around long enough to know for sure how they'll hold up.

I love your reviews. I get a kick out of your animated and often sarcastically witty style. I watched the Video of you at the Chicago auto show with TFL host and it felt like you brought your watching audience with you rather than simply along for the ride. Well done. Also, Riley is gorgeous. You've gotta love dog/cat lovers. That said, I LOVE Land Rovers and especially the Defender. I've had 3 Land Rovers in the past, the last one was a 2014 Evoque. I actually requested the dealership sign a waver contract that I drew up myself stating in a nutshell, if I decide that this thing is a piece of crap within the 1st 3 months that I can return it no questions asked and receive a full refund. They wouldn't do it. I should have walked. I didn't. The Evoque was abysmal in reliability. The last draw was pulling up to my Dermatology appointment that took 4 months to book, and the piece of junk wouldn't shut off. I mean actually would not turn off when I pushed the ignition button. I wasn't in a good area of Hartford (CT), so I couldn't just let it run. I found myself driving in rush hour on a Friday afternoon to the dealership within 10 minutes of closing. They took it in but had no loner car for me. I insisted they give me a salesman's vehicle to drive and let him take the bus. That him was the salesman I had that insisted I would have a wonderful experience with my new vehicle and that the reliability issues of LR were all in the past. NOT. By the way, of your friends, TFL folk, remember, they went through 3 Defenders before they had one that lasted more than 200 miles. Kind of. SO, here I am again, obsessed with the Defender. OYY. I should just stop this nonsense and go buy a 4Runner Limited. I must be out of my mind. :)

Have to imagine that laptop screen stuck to the dash at that angle would produce hella glare at times? Also, Range Rover's reliability bar started at a subterranean level so even if it really is improved, it still can't suck enough. Luckily for us, we have a plethora of other options in this space.

JLR is still near the bottom of the usual reliability lists. I think the point here is that, like the industry as a whole, JLRs have become much more reliable. 0:10 Still, if the discussion was about “fast” and JLR was now much faster than before, but still slower than everyone else, we could still call them “slow”.

Everybody's gripe about reliability or any other issues stem from the 70s and 80s. Pick nearly any brand nowadays and there's a mob of people who would complain senselessly about something. Decades old biases are hard to break for people no matter how good something currently is. It's actually rather sad.

For people who are all about what name is on the badge, and the judgment of equally ignorant and superficial people they admire. Style ALWAYS before Substance… Perception ALWAYS over reality. I'm in the market for a full size SUV and the first thing i did was look for and research the 2023 and 2024 MB GLS's; six and eight cylinder model's (no AMG). I thought id look at Land Rovers though (as i had already looked at the ugly BMW X7). And low and behold, as im pondering the reliability stigma of Range Rovers, this video appears! And after reading some of the comments... I'm going to take this as an omen sent by God and just stick with my original intentions and get a GLS with the V8. These machines are too big and expensive to take chances and i need proven reliability; i know what to do with a Mercedes Benz and know what kind of services ill receive if i have issues. Land Rover.... i dont even know anybody who owns one!
