It’s just a crazy to thing to say about the Z6 III relative to the Z6 II. The Z6 II was basically just a second card slot added onto the 2018 launch camera. I mean the Z6 III has a damn semi stacked sensor and they’re saying it’s basically the same as the Z6 II.

I love the Z6III. It's got everything I need to take beautiful photos for my clients, and I don't have to deal with 45mp files that add little value and slow me down. I like it so much that I have a Z8 with 162 shutter actuations. I literally set it up to what I thought would work for me, fired a few test shots, and ahoved it in my camera bag. It hasn't left sense. It's a nice camera and someday I will use it for wildlife when I have time. Otherwise, it's a nice backup.

Nikon Z6iii AF is vastly better than the Z6ii according to Jared Polin - Fro Knows Photo. He says it is superior to Sony A7iv. Also, Nikon new Firmware updates are very good!! Bird Mode and Product mode for new Nikon Z50ii work really well in demos shown on KZbin (Product Mode snaps AF on product when placed in front of camera very fast, then snaps back to face/eye fast when product is removed. Bird mode sticks to Birds eye very well shown in YT demos, however mostly when bird is a bit larger in frame with a long lens while on a branch. BIF in flight, it just grabs the whole bird not the eye). I would imagine these modes is just a firmware update away for the Z6iii, unless it has it already. (Tony, how about doing a focus test between Z6iii and Sony A7iv to be sure, and compare to Jared evaluation?)

Guys I love what you do, but this came off as a bit jaded. To me this was a very interesting year in the industry and a positive one because for the first time in a while sales are starting to rise again. This was a year that Nikon and Panasonic started learning from Fuji, by bringing retro looks, downloadable LUTs and high quality B&W shooting in their products: putting the shooting experience more front and centre. This was also a year of some truly spectacular new lenses, including the rise for the first time of a genuinely high quality Chinese lens manufacturer in Viltrox. We are finally moving past the technical specification era of photography and with a new and expanding the community of photographers who care more about form factor, looks, and experience. New cameras are getting more expensive by the circular economy is booming and second hand kit is more popular than ever. Lots of positives and lots to be excited about in the year to come, even if the traditional manufacturers have not had their most imaginative year

I have fond memories of my 1980’s era Kodak Instamatic 110 that I bought to document my travels in the US Navy aboard aircraft carriers. I was only 17 when I joined and I knew absolutely nothing about cameras, but I still have all the photos and negatives of exotic places. Even though they are terrible quality, who cares? It got the job done and gives me the warm fuzzies of a better era! I do love my Canon R50 nowadays, nonetheless!

The Panasonic S9 (with the 18-40mm lens) is probably the camera which most interested me. A very compact and capable full-frame (or aps-c) camera with small quality lenses is what I'd most be likely to buy, for when I don't want to carry my big camera around. I still wish they'd put the AF from the S9 into a new micro 4/3rds though.

Nikon and M43 user here. Slim pickings for m43 this year. The OM1 mark II was just a modest upgrade. I still use the mark I. It's more than good enough. If 20MP was an issue, I'd go for the G9II, but it's not an issue. The lack of true mid and entry-level cameras is disappointing, Panny and Oly used to release those nearly every year. Nikon was busier this year, but none of their offerings really interest me. I still use a Z6 mark I. No interest in APSC. I mourn the death of the Z7 line.

I think the most exciting innovations coming out right now are the KZbin creators who find ways to inspire us amateur photographers to try out new skills, go to new places, and get better at different genres of photography. Especially as AI seems to be intruding so much into photography, finding new ways to enjoy actual/real photography seems to be the biggest innovation, and one that will keep people enjoying the gear they have as they work on new skills and challenges. How many of us actually suffer because a particular generation of camera now is only "a little better" than the last one?

The Canon EOS R1 has Cross-Type AF, a world's first in a mirrorless camera. It also has the fastest image read-out speed in a mass produced, non-global shutter camera, for very little rolling shutter effect. These are innovations that everyone dismisses, but which provide tangible improvements and higher keeper rates in a professional body. For professional sports, action, wildlife and even high-end weddings and events photographers, it provides opportunities for bottom-line income development. (Higher keeper-rates and reliable image and video acquisition yields better deliverables and happier clients.)

I think you should give Canon more "innovation credits" for putting an Ai chip in their top cameras - the potential for this is much underutilized. IMHO this is because these cameras are (at least initially) targeted to pro shooters who don't need Ai help, and Canon is a very conservative company. For the larger market of camera enthusiasts with less training, in-camera Ai opens a lot of possibilities : look at the ads for the Arsenal Camera Assistant to see some of the possibilities. So hopefully Canon will take more advantage of the chip's capabilities in the future.

Canon had their best year for ages with two new hybrid Camera, R1 & R5II a C80 and C400, new RF lenses 35mm, 28mm and 24-105 f2.8 to name just a few so I think that feels like they did pretty well. The R1 is perfect for its intended use. The people that wanted more mega pixels would not be buyers anyway so just make as camera for your audience not the press. Well done Canon for not letting professionals who actually use the camera down. A global shutter is coming in the R3II at the end of next year along with possibly a 200-600 f4 which will be a mad combo. Sony A1II was a disappointment and there was no point in bringing this out. They should have waited a year and added something new. It's equivalent to the R5II in real terms which is over £2k cheaper, who is going to buy it?

At this point, with just incremental spec-sheet improvements which offer almost no benefit to 90% of stills photographers... The only thing which would be a big change in the right direction would be full Android UI integration. Sony MUST be working on an Xperia/Alpha camera, with a big high-res rear screen, apps etc. Surely? Maybe a fixed lens compact camera to begin with e.g. a new RX1? Seems logical progression to me, as everyone learns photography on a phone now, and as cameras edge closer to being smartphones with uninterchangeable lenses... The ever-increasing numbers on a spec sheet are cool though, but I'll still be using a previous generation camera for the foreseeable future.

This is probably counter intuitive, but other than Adobe, who I despised for years, I'm very happy and grateful for all the choices I have now. The features, while incremental enhancements, are amazing. AF is a total game changer from the days of film. We have sooooooo many great choices and options for equipment and software, it's hard to be unhappy with anything other than Adobe selling creatives down the river for their crappy subscriptions and AI.

Thanks, Tony, Chelsea. I really appreciate your coverage of these things. I was disappointed with the MFT releases of 2024. Do you have any idea if there will be something new come in 2025? I'm really wanting more MP than there currently is out there. Panasonic and OMDS are not giving us what we want. I'd love to get a few more MP. The OM-1 is so much fun to shoot with. I find it so well laid out that I can do a lot just with muscle memory. I wish the menu button were better located. The re-mapping of the trash button is a stop-gap, but it's not a perfect solution. I'm not sure who thought putting the menu button over left of the EVF was a good idea. So I'll be looking forward to a revamped model with at least 30MP. The OM-1 Mii was just not worth upgrading to. It's virtually the OM-1 with a firmware update. Let's hope 2025 is a good year for cameras. Perhaps the tariffs won't affect things too badly.

No, I am not disappointed this year, I got the Sigma 500mm 5.6 DG DN OS Sports, a great Lens ! I got the Sony A7RV at a very low price, a great Camera ! I got the Voigtländer Nokton 50mm 1.0 Aspherical, a great Lens ! I got the Sony 85mm 1.4 GM II, a great Lens. I do wish Sony soon will make a Sony "A7000" with the 40 megapixels Sony sensor that already sits in several Fuji Cameras. I do wish Sony will make a "A7RIV" with 15-bit RAW files. I do wish Sony will make A7CIII/A7CRII with a much better EVF and joy stick. Have a nice day.

From what I gather Canon’s AI upscaling does not outputs RAW files, just jpegs, which makes it useless. Just use an app like Topaz Gigapixel or Light Room’s super resolution instead. Most likely will do a much better job.

What else is there left to do, maybe next up cameras that decide on the look, composition and then take the picture for you. There's literally nothing left to, or is there, someone please elaborate.

As a Nikon shooter, I'm a bit satisfied with what Nikon has released this year, the Z6 III (finally) and the Z50 II (finally) although as with cameras like the R1 and the a1 II, I think the Z50 II fell a bit short of expectations by those looking to get into the Z system or for an upgrade from their Z50 or Z30. While it does have improved AF and video features, I think many people were hoping for more like IBIS even if that meant a $1200 price tag (Basically an a6700 / R7 competitor). In reality though, all three cameras had a successful year... Sony might come in third simply because the a1 Mark II seems to have sort of missed the mark with existing a1 users, and the same for Canon with the R1, but they did pu some AI into the R1 which should make it more competitive to the R3 despite having the same resolution, plus Canon updated their two other bodies (the R6 and R5). NIkon came out with the long anticipated Z6 III and I think that was a big hit, and now the Z50 II, maybe less so, but still much appreciated by the APSC crowd). So it was a good year for all camera manufacturers, except maybe Olympus, but even Panasonic and Fuji had some big releases this year (the S9 for Panasonic, which maybe didn't get quite the warm welcome they were hoping for since they skimped on some things, like an EVF), and Fuji released the XT50 which seems to be a big update from the XT30. Hopefully next year we see some more stuff, like a Nikon Z9 Mark II, Canon R7 Mark II (and maybe an R6 Mark III) among many other things. And hopefully we see more licensed third party lenses for all mounts (Canon has been sluggish in getting third parties onboard, but at least there are some options -- although just for APSC, so hopefully 2025 will change that but only Canon will decide that; It has benefited NIkon and Sony so far to have both licensed and unlicensed third parties).

DJI has a lot of momentum behind them. The Pocket 3 is a game changer imo. No need for hybrid cameras when you have that for video.

@ I am sooo tired of sneakernet with SD cards. I want my camera to have the ability to upload files automatically to network storage like my smartphone. My A9 has an Ethernet port for crying out loud which does nothing but old school ftp and the WiFi is complete trash. I don’t get why camera makers won’t add these workflow features.

I turned this off because I’m sick and tired of this Nikon’s AF is still not as good as good as Canon and Sony broken record, which many both on here and in the photographic press do not agree is the case. However, Nikon need to put this assertion to bed once and for all, either by means of firmware updates or future bodies. In any case, any differences I’m sure are minuscule and ignores the fact that AF is just one facet of judging a system and certainly for me, in many other areas (ergonomics, lenses, etc) Nikon is class leading.

It used to be true, but with the release of the more recent cameras (Z6 III, Zf, Z8, Z50 II) that sort of has not been an issues. But with the first and second gen Z bodies, it is/was an issue and they did trail Canon and Sony by a good amount in terms of AF. I've owned pretty much all of the Z I and II bodies and they trailed the other two brands (I didn't buy the Z6 III but have the Zf and even that is a big improvement over the Z6 I/II and only slightly slower in terms of AF to the Z6 III).

Great video!! My biggest mistake (like you Chelsea): I sold my X100V in anticipation of getting an X100VI (and still waiting). Plus I am waiting for maybe, someday, for Lumix to come out with a successor to the S1R (or higher res S5). It's been a very underwhelming year, except for the newly announced Fujifilm 16-55mm f/2.8 II. The original was too large for something like an X-T5.

You do not need many megapixels as with MFT you do not need to crop, the cameras does it for you.

Yeah I mean we know about cropping of course. You can reach the same equivalent focal length with a high megapixel camera, but you can also shoot wider and crop, and the wider field of view makes it MUCH easier to track moving animals.
