Serious question - does cultural background play a role in reviewing/preferences? Three Indian/South Asian reviewers choosing the Supermix 4 as biggest disappointment seems strange as they've been widely praised by many other reviewers (I'm a fan myself, not the best I've ever heard but nowhere near the worst of the year). Is it musical taste/library showing a flaw that I'm not seeing in my listening? Or was it a bad review unit doing the rounds? Obviously could just be a coincidence though; it's a completely subjective hobby after all. Keep up the good work everyone and have a good New Year!
@rohitagniАй бұрын
There's an exception here 😉😉
@Sonic_SleuthАй бұрын
As you rightly said what sounds good is subjective for the most part. Three reviewers, even from the same region, don't represent the preferences of an entire population (You have Rohitagni as a prime example from the same region. SM4 was his best pick). While the Supermix 4 has received praise, it does have some unique characteristics that might not align with everyone's tastes. For example, some find its tuning a bit unconventional, particularly in the treble, which can come across as overly energetic or sibilant with certain tracks or genres. Others find the bass presentation a bit less impactful than they prefer. And that's perfectly okay! What one person perceives as a flaw, another might consider a desirable characteristic. It all comes down to personal preference and synergy with your music library and listening style. It's also important to remember that it's extremely difficult to present an objective opinion because objective measurements can only tell part of the story. Subjective listening experiences and individual preferences are crucial in the audiophile world so that people can relate to objective analysis with subjective listening experience. Finding reviewers whose tastes align with yours can be incredibly helpful in navigating the vast landscape of audio gear. Keep exploring and enjoy the journey!

I will confirm that in a few days, Supermix 4 is on the way to me
@joaobortone4312Ай бұрын
Is not really about subjective only, I can assure you. There is a bias towards some soumd signatures that differs between reviewers of course. But there is the big factor of HRTF involvment in sound, some people's ear canal can exacerbate a peak, or even create one that is not there, on the treble. One example is jay's audio, that got a headache while listening to the Aful Cantor, when the r/iems forum in reddit got these at the top 5 recommendation. That said, I can see an argument made by the shape of ear being largelly dependent on the region of the world and ethnicity, but I highly doubt that that is the case. There needs to be studies approaching this subject, because as far as I know, the measurement rigs we got are designed to be a population average, but I don't think there is a lot representation from every ethnicity in the research
@michaelscully2975Ай бұрын
Thanks for all the replies. Just want to make clear I'm not a weird ethno-determinist. I just found it really interesting to find three strong "negative" opinions of the SM4 when I'd not really heard many reviewers voice them before. I definitely fall in the 'probably just coincidence' camp. I certainly hold some less popular opinions on some releases from this year (absolutely love the 7hz Five and REALLY didn't get on with the KE4) so it's all horses for courses. Coming into my third year of serious involvement in the hobby and love how supportive and welcoming everyone is (most of the time). Happy new year all.
