Do you mean how Clarkson bends the truth to make things “British”? Then yes, he’s carrying that mantle. The 427 cobra is so thoroughly reengineered that there is hardly anything the same to the ACE frame is different, suspension is different… it’s like the gt40. Yes both started as British cars but after their chassis and aerodynamics were found to be inadequate they were reengineered in the U.S. and only after that did they become the legendary cars they are now. If they had kept the British chassis as it was for both cars, they would have never won much anything and ended up a footnote in history and nothing more.

The AC Ace from which the AC Cobra was later built was only 100 HP and had a 0 - 60 time of slightly over 11 seconds. This vehicle would have faded into history if not for Carrol Shelby fitting it with powerful V8 engines, drivetrains and suspension upgrades. Shelby's versions were racetrack terrors that established the Cobra as the legend it is today.

AC engineered and built all 900+ original road going Cobras, and they still build them today. Carroll Shelby got the idea of an American V8 in an English sports car from Sydney Allard, who Shelby raced for and against other manufacturers like AC. Allard had been putting V8s into light sports cars since 1948 and in the early 50s designed and built a small sports car with a Hemi V8 to sell in the North American market, called the Allard K3, sadly it wasn't a success and Allard folded as a car manufacturer and racing company in 1957, but Shelby took that idea with him back to the States and four years later AC got a call.

This “history” lesson is leaving out a lot of important things that make this car American and not British. Like how the chassis was completely reengineered by Shelby with larger main tubes in the chassis and completely different suspension. So the engine, transmission and chassis were American, and I guess the original non flared body is the only thing purely british about the cobra. So the famous 427 s/c literally has nothing besides the lights that haven’t been changed from the Ace. My maybe may be off, but out of all the pieces of the car, having the body, chassis, engine and transmission all designed in the U.S. doesn’t make this car British really, does it?
@MaddNomad10154 ай бұрын

*More interesting info on the AC Cobra.* _"In the early hours of 11 June 1964, AC Cars took a 4.8-litre Ford-powered Cobra Coupé GT car on to the M1 motorway to do a high-speed test run before the Le Mans 24 Hours. The team's driver, Jack Sears, recorded 185mph on the motorway, and the national media heard about it."_ And we know what happened as an indirect result of the above. The permanent 70 mph speed limit in 1967 was introduced after a couple earlier trials. But even though the government claim that it was due to the oil crisis, most would say that the government and, more importantly, the police, were totally shocked that someone could drive up the M1 at that speed.
