Own one, love it. It’s my first Subaru btw and everything else I shopped felt like I was settling. All the technology can be overwhelming - I love tech and hope to learn this car before the decade is out. The control screen seems slow-responding, and sometimes the connection to car play doesn’t happen. So I hope Subaru can address that. Thanks for the review!

@@lenbri since my purchase I consistently get 24+/25 mpg. It’s my suburban commute and get to side hustle driver, and I’m not particularly heavy on the gas though I am enjoying having a car that can accelerate when I want it to. Maybe if I did a long Hwy road trip I could get higher milesge, but for now 25 is my go-to number.

3 years ago I bought my wife an Outback for her 50th birthday. It’s a naturally aspirated engine and she loves it, as do I. So last December I bought a Forester Touring for me. I begged my wife to let me get leather interior for her, but she declined. Now that she’s driven and been a passenger in my Touring, she’s fallen in love with the leather. So in 25, we’ll be selling her Outback and our now 12 year old pickup and buy the new Tacoma Limited 4WD hybrid. She prefers the leather and size of the Forester over her Outback. We live in a very mountainous area of north central WA state and get 5-7 feet of snow every winter. We live 5 miles from town on a private road which we have to plow and maintain ourselves. The city is 25 miles away. We’re so satisfied with the AWD system on our Subie’s. Our previous Toyota’s had to have studded tires in the winter despite that they were AWD. Our factory tires do great in the winter so that says a LOT about Subaru

@@Doc1855 I used to live in St. Louis and my wife had a 2018 Outback. When the roads were iced over, hers had no problems tracking on the road, even going up our steep driveway. I had a Jeep Wrangler at the time and it had difficulty in 4WD. I'm on my 7th Subaru since 1994, my first two I destroyed in wrecks and they kept me completely safe. I keep coming back to Subaru. We have a 23 OB now, and I want a Forester but considering a turbo OB. I appreciate your comment, thank you.

Nice review. I currently own a '22 Outback Premium and love it apart from the anemic engine and goofy HVAC controls. A few weeks ago I had to take it in for service and they loaned me a new XT. Darn it! There was no way to go back to the 2.5liter premium because they've addressed all of my complaints. I'll be taking delivery of an Onyx XT in a few days that includes the pleather seats that shouldn't be such a magnet for black lab hair.

We got the ‘24 Onyx XT, with the tow package. Upgraded the 4-pin trailer connector to a 7-pin, installed a Redarc trailer brake controller, and purchased a Harbor Freight 10,000 lb equalizer hitch. We picked up a Jayco Jayflight SLX 195 RBW, which is about 3000 lbs dry. We are pushing the limits on towing, but the car just runs with it. Powers right up steep hills, haven’t exceeded 230 degrees oil temp, and water temperature stays in normal range. Pleased as punch with it.

2020 Wrx driver on an extended lease. Was hoping that the Turbo was going to show up in the Crosstrex or they were going to announce a Hatch Wrx for 2024. Seems like that won’t be coming to America soon. So I am looking at the Onyx XT. I really like the CVT and Turbo. @@AutomotiveAnonymous208 - I just bought a new 2024 Outback Limited XT yesterday, and while I’m happy to have a space saver over a tire repair kit (which I also have), I’m thinking it would be a nice touch NOT to have to do all that work in a pouring rain OR in the heat of the day. I mean, just changing a tire should suffice, right? I’ll check about ordering another wheel and tire…thanks!
@AutomotiveAnonymous208
@AutomotiveAnonymous208 7 ай бұрын
I’m never actually needed to change a tire on the side of the road, but I would also much prefer just swapping on a full size spare and then sorting it all out at the tire store! I will say sometimes techs will over tighten lug nuts and having a breaker/extension bar might not be a bad idea either. But I’m saying this having not ever thoroughly gone through what’s in my Wilderness set up past the scissor jack and eye bolt hole, lol.
@dannymcneal
@dannymcneal 7 ай бұрын
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 - I’ve only had to change a tire twice in my life (I’m 65)-once was in my driveway and the other out on the open road-neither stranded me, because I was prepared. I now carry a nice tire repair kit with all I need to repair a punctured tire. Plus, a VIAIR 88P portable compressor. Except for a massive sidewall puncture, I should be good to go. However, in reading the Quick Start Guide, I did learn something this morning about that space-saver spare tire that might be significant: The space-saver tire cannot be used to replace a front tire. Consequently, if a front tire goes bad, I have to put the rear tire on the front and put the space-saver on the rear. And how’s that gonna work out on the open road with just one jack? All the more reason to replace the space-saver tire with a full-size tire. Also according to the Guide, both the Onyx XT and Wilderness models include a full-size spare. Odd choice by Subaru to include only these two models. I would have thought surely to include the top trims, or perhaps all of the XT models. Hmmm…
@AutomotiveAnonymous208
@AutomotiveAnonymous208 7 ай бұрын
That’s an awesome tire record! It does sound like you’re as set as you can be. The onyx XT gets the spare because that’s the model the wilderness is “built” off of, as of that really means anything, lol. Your front wheels do 100% of the steering and 80% the braking, that’s why the front needs full size tires. If needed to swap around before you get the full size spare you could likely jack up the same side of the vehicle, or swap the rear with the spare, and then swap that one that came off with the front. 🙂

For most people it’s a much better car without the turbo, unless you regularly carry heavy loads or pull a trailer. In my opinion, the naturally aspirated, 2.5 is just a beautiful engine. I’ve had that engine in my two Foresters and I’m looking forward to having it in my new Outback.

The redesign could be pushed to 2026, because the Forester redesign will likely happen in 2025. Less gas mileage with the turbo and you have to be on top of your oil change big time also you have to let the turbo warm up for about 1 min before putting in drive that’s a must for the life span of the turbo I went no turbo

That’s all very true! Something cool is that these actually use a Garrett name brand turbo. I recently learned that when taking off the bumper a couple weeks ago to install my LED light bar (videos posted if you’re interested).

If they put a TURBO on the CROSSTREK-- I'd take one FOR SURE!!!-- but I don't like the underpowered part of the CROSSTREK-- this one (OUTBACK Limited XT).. is GREAT... but I don't know if I need this much.. it's JUST ME.. and although Subarus in general are much easier to work on -- I would love the CROSSTREK-- IF they fix the power issue.

The fuel consumption of a V6. That 260 HP is not free. The 2.4 L direct injected turbo reliability is yet to be seen compared to the 2.5 L 176 HP version over time.

That’s all very true! As for reliability I personally would never have owned an older EJ turbo engine. But this current FA series seems to me much improved. I own an OBW and have good confidence in the powertrain because the bigger heavier Ascent has had it for longer with few issues reported on the forums. Thanks for watching! 🙂

I"ve learned lately that the CVT is GOOD in these- and in Toyotas because they are made IN HOUSE- not by a third party factory.. and the Subaru DOES have THE BEST AWD system on the market- hands down... so I'm torn between THIS, the Crosstrek (although underpowered bigtime), and the MAZDA CX-50!!!
@AutomotiveAnonymous208
@AutomotiveAnonymous208 5 ай бұрын
You’re right, Subaru seems to make CVTs about as good as anyone from my understanding as well. Definitely test drive the CX-50. I thought they looked cool and am happy you can get a turbo with a 6 speed auto, but the interior dimensions I recall being a bit weird with its wide low stance.

I live at 200' elevation and its just me in a vehicle 99% of the time, so I don't need the turbo. I own a 2021 Legacy Touring XT and wish I'd gotten a Limited with the naturally aspirated engine. I'm not sure if the current year Outback XT has a differently calibrated engine/CVT, but I dislike the one on my car. The most uneven, difficult to modulate power delivery of any car I've ever driven. Its almost impossible to accelerate smoothly unless I'm driving like a granny. Anything from medium throttle on seems to confuse the CVT and it slightly jerks back and forth and does its hard fake shifts. I've spoken with the service manager several times in the two years I've owned it and get the same answer - "working as intended", no updates or service advisories for it. They gave me an Outback loaner once with the base engine and it was like night and day - totally smooth and "happy" with the CVT.

You must go to Cascade Subaru in Wenatchee, WA. We have a problem with our Outback and took our Subie back for 3 years and they never found the problem with the horn honking for no reason

@@Doc1855 Courtesy Subaru in Chico, CA. I can't really blame them - their diagnostic equipment showed it working to factory specs and there weren't any updates/service bulletins from Subaru regarding it. I've watched other reviews regarding that engine in both the Legacy and Outback XT models ( Micah Muzio of Kelley Blue Book in particular) and they've noticed it too.

@@jeffmorse645 Our Forester jerks sometimes like it’s hunting for a “gear”. Cascade Subaru in Wenatchee, WA service department is so bad that most customers take their Subie’s to an outside repair shop (H&D auto), which works exclusively on Subaru’s. Our Outback has only 28K miles and our Forester has only 11K miles, so our mechanic only does routine maintenance.

I’m sorry to hear that. I personally usually drive like a granny and do mostly highway in my turbo Outback so it often feels very smooth. But between the CVT and the sometimes surgy boost quickly ramping up causing high low end torque they certainly can feel as you’ve described in your Legacy. 😢
