Embarking on a surf perch fishing adventure, the coastal air thick with the scent of saltwater, you decide to employ a time-tested bait strategy: clam necks. Armed with a sturdy fishing rod, you head to the water's edge, the waves dancing with anticipation. With each cast, you carefully thread a succulent piece of clam neck onto the hook, its rich aroma wafting through the air, tempting the discerning taste buds of surf perch lurking beneath the surf.
As you cast into the breaking waves, there's a sense of connection to both nature and tradition. The clam neck, a natural and irresistible bait, mimics the surf perch's natural prey, enticing them to strike. The rhythmic motion of casting becomes a dance with the ocean, each movement calculated to lure in the elusive catch.
Patience becomes a virtue as you stand against the backdrop of the expansive coastline, the horizon stretching endlessly before you. The anticipation builds with each tug on the line, a signal that a surf perch may have taken the bait. The thrill of the catch, the exhilarating fight against the fish, is matched only by the satisfaction of knowing you've outsmarted these cunning creatures using a bait that resonates with their coastal palate.
Once you've successfully reeled in your surf perch, there's a moment of triumph-a connection to the primal rhythm of the sea. As you prepare to fry the prized catch, the clam necks that played a pivotal role in the pursuit now serve as a testament to the harmony between angler and ocean. The beach becomes your kitchen, the sand beneath your feet a testament to the authenticity of the experience.
The aroma of sizzling surf perch fillets, seasoned to perfection, fills the air. The sound of waves crashing in the background becomes the symphony to your culinary masterpiece. A beachside feast unfolds, combining the thrill of the catch, the art of angling, and the joy of indulging in a meal that captures the essence of the sea-all thanks to the humble clam neck, a secret weapon in the world of surf perch fishing.

Just joined your KZbin channel. When I first saw you driving to the beach I couldn’t tell where you were fishing on the coast. I was surprised when you said Washington State. I haven’t seen any surf fishing videos that far up the coast. I’m from the OC down here in Southern California. I love surf fishing and I’ve fished from as far south as Cabo San Lucas in Baja, Mexico to as far north as Pismo Beach near San Luis Obispo, CA. I especially like to catch perch, however down here we mainly catch Barred Surfperch. When I lived in Lompoc, Ca. I often caught Barred Perch that averaged 2-3 lbs. They were giants and fun as hell to catch! Fishing down here in SoCal is okay, but the fish are a lot smaller. I noticed the farther north you go the water gets colder and the perch get bigger. I guess that’s why your perch are so big and fat! Btw, what other species of fish do you guys catch up there in Washington? We catch a wide variety of fish i.e., three different croakers, corbina, California Halibut, White Seabass, Stripers, wide varieties of rays and sharks. Most of us fish with lighter gear i.e., 6’-7’ rod with a small spinning reel and light 6-8 lb.line. The bait of choice is either sand crabs or lures/jigs. In Cabo I fish with heavier gear, 10’-12’ pole with a 3000-4000 spinning reel and 20-50 lb braid! We typically fish with mainly lures or jigs down there. Anyway my fishing brother, I really enjoyed watching your video and look forward to watching more. Oh, and I especially liked the sweet and sour soup you and your wife made. What a pot full of vegetables and herbs! My wife is Filipina and she loves to cook fish soups too… I eat it with rice and sauce as well!!! Lol! My name is Dan Suzuki, I’m a Retired USAF and Vietnam Vet. P.S. and I fished around the world during my 22 yr. military career.

Hello my friend and thank you so much for tuning and subscribing to my channel! We catch variety of fish up here as well as far as surf fishing goes we catch redtail perch and silver tail perch, salmon on the surf believe it or not, flounder and once awhile stripe bass. Thank you so much for sharing your story with me 😃

Thank you for replying so quickly! Sorry, I just saw your reply today! Yeah, those redtail perch are beautiful and big too. I have to go up there someday and join you my friend, the fishing looks amazing! My youngest son moved to Washington State, somewhere called Snohomish. He is now working and living there with his girlfriend… He says it’s beautiful up there and he loves it. Now I have a reason to go all the way to Washington, lol!!! Btw, I have four adult children and they all love to fish. I taught them all how to fish in both fresh and saltwater, so they’re all avid and talented fishermen like yourself. Believe it or not my wife might be the best of all of us… she’s serious and relentless when it comes to fishing. She often catches the most and the largest fish…

How where the winds on this day do you remember? I recently went the wings were about 8mph and I still had to use 8oz pyramid weight in order for it not to drag. Or do you let it drag? Do you feel it all the time or just throw and wait? Just trying to get better at surf fishing and have been having very limited success.

Your soup looks amazing. I never thought to use perch in a soup. I normally fry them. I’m not a huge fan of perch, because I find the meat to be a bit mushy. Does it get a little more firm when you cook it in the soup?

If you chill the fillets in the fridge for an hour or 2 just before frying, it helps firm the meat.

@washingtonlife The best times are around January to March, but February is very good. Around Pismo Beach is great. Another place I really like is San Simeon because not a lot of people there, but rocky so be prepared to loose gears. From the years I've been there I've gotten pretty big sizes. Mostly barred perches. I preferred red tail and stripped perch.
