I worked at a Suzuki dealership about 15 years ago. New bikes would arrive with the mild steel downpipes and fasteners covered in corrosion. Engines and transmission were largely OK but bolted on bits had a habit of falling off and you could see corners cut everywhere. They were known for producing cheap, honest bikes. In fact that was our clientele - people who could not afford (or didn’t want to pay) the price for more “premium” brands. They’ve since upped their game (and their prices), mainly because there was no profit in heavily discounted (already) cheap bikes, but the stigma of being cheap bikes seems to follow them around. Like all manufacturers, they realised the gullible public will pay car money for “premium” features. At least the 800 series still represents good value for money AND good quality. This bike is a bit Frankenstein to me - either market the GT better or release a proper adv bike (IMHO the V Strom 1000 misses the mark by quite a margin).

@@MH-xd2nd Had several bikes from different brands. The bikes with the less issues came from Suzuki. In fact, never had any problems with them.
@MH-xd2nd3 ай бұрын
That was because until relatively recently they were mechanically extremely simple. You’d be lucky to find ABS, let alone anything more fancy. And as I mentioned the engine and transmission were pretty bulletproof, as was the paint (oil based). Sadly the grade of metal and plastics, whilst not dangerous, was generally poorer than most other brands. I must have seen more than a thousand Suzukis in my time there and I saw some horror stories. Things got better with the revised V Strom 650 around 2012. That being said I always had a soft spot for them. My GSX1250 had monstrous torque and never had a false neutral. 3,700 mile service intervals and a no link chain (a new chain meant removing the swingarm) plus the slightly vague handling were not so good 😂

I have ridden both the Suzuki and Yamaha 9 GT+, and the Yamaha offers a superior package. It includes adaptive cruise control, brakes linked to the suspension in addition to being linked brakes, a third-generation quick shifter, and an engine with substantial mid-range torque. One downside of the Suzuki is its noticeable vibrations, wind noise, and the need for high revs to showcase its performance.

I had the GSXS1000F and loved it except for the absurd gearing. 1st gear was way too tall, and 6th was screaming at 5K at perfectly legal highway speeds.

Unfortunately, almost all motorcycles from Japan and Europe have race track gearing.
@langhamp89123 ай бұрын
@@rightwingsafetysquad9872 All the sportbikes have really tall first gearing, and it makes sense to if you're going to visit the racetrack once in a while. The first time I rode a sportbike on the track I found the gearing made sense...and did GP shifting when I was stuck in a left hand turn at redline (I had street shifting). I sold the GSXS1000 and soon afterwards bought a '22 XSR900. Cruise control, sensible gearing, smaller engine output, MUCH lighter, the XSR900 is a much better casual street bike and commuting bike.

I have the gsx-s750 and it isn't screaming at highway speeds - is the gearing that much different?
@langhamp89122 күн бұрын
@@anxiousappliance I've ridden 400cc inline fours with wider gearing than the GSXS1000. I think everyone ends up riding a GSXS1000 like a small bike...keep the revs up and use relatively large throttle openings...but I would like a bike that is more relaxed and street-oriented for the 90% of urban/commuting riding I actually do.

The truth is that Suzuki is not less than Yamaha and Honda in anything. It is preferred in some countries like my country, and it is also the highest in reliability and endurance of other brands. It is similar to Toyota in Japan, where the equipment is lower, the price is lower, and the reliability is higher.

And it's not even a new engine. It's still the same old K5 engine that is how old? 20 years... They are milking it really good. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but the price is way too high for it. Advantage is, you will never run out of spare parts ever.

Use yer blinker. What, exactly, devalues a bike that has the name "Suzuki" on it, parts and quality being the same? I'd like to see Suzuki make same gearing adjustments between the S1K variants and offer a custom version of Puig's multi-adjustavle deflector 2.0. But mostly I want to see a version of this in 749cc 4 or 776cc twin.

Screen needs tools to adjust it so there’s that, the foot pegs are a little high for long distance touring , the seat isn’t comfortable for me. I agree, for a Suzuki it’s encroaching on premium brand territory…….I do rate the TFT’s Suzuki is using these days - nice review two thumbs up 👍👍

Great review as always. Love how the bike feels on the showroom floor - great ergos for me, great styling, great color - but I struggle with the value proposition as well. And why Suzuki doesn't bother even offering as optional a color matched top case blows my mind. In their reveal, they said the bke was only designed for soft luggage behind the passenger seat. So that likely means the sub-frame can't even handle an aftermarket solution. Do they even do customer research and actually talk to sport touring customers? For $18K and all the not-so-insignificant annoyances you mentioned this bike is and will not be in my consideration set.

I had a testride on the GT and I agree with your review. The motor sounds promising but can't deliver in lower revs. The quickshifter is the only highlight which is really smooth. The price for a Suzuki is too close to a BMW S1000XR which is far more capable and keeps its value after years.

Awesome video! Good points all, no doubt. Heated grips have to be the cheapest addition to a motorcycle . As well as windscreen. I don't see the logic in that. Great looking bike though. I did think the Suzuki brand comment was a little harsh. I do think it is priced too high based on competition. Best!

I really appreciate all the additional info, that you supply with the subtitles, like: 04:30, 00:40 and others. They really help us understand better what's the point of the presenter. And it completely differentiate Your materials from the others. 👌

I did in fact pause the chart and in doing so noticed that you've converted the BMW F900 XR's 4.20L/100km to 33.6mpg US. I'd have guessed that more like 56 mpg US or 67 miles per real gallon.

Would dropping down a tooth on the rear help? You mentioned it seems to like being in a taller gear and, it needs a 7th gear. Try dropping a tooth or two.
@NothingToProve3 ай бұрын
Yea, it would but that would mess up everything else, speedo, 6-axis IMU, all the electronics are set up for the diameter of the two sprockets, therefore changing the diameter of the sprocket changes the geometry of the suspension, further complicating things. Probably wouldn't notice it much at first but when pushed, then the problems would raise it's ugly head.

serious question why would anyone buy this over a vstrom1050 road version?
@terrellgarren71253 ай бұрын
Excellent question. No. V-STROM has better rider triangle, wind protection, 19" front, crazy reliable engine, more off road capable than the GX. Just rode my 1050XT from NC to Alaska and back. 10K miles in 25 days. Not a single problem. Few bikes I would trust in the middle of the Yukon on a rough road 500 miles from a dealer. Certainly not a Ducati or KTM.

To my eyes Suzuki are at least 3 years behind the curve, a new KTM1290S (with adaptive Cruise) would be 17.5K- so why would I pay more for less features in a GX?

Because GX will work, KTM well… occasionally, but, for sure you’ll have your adaptive cruise control at dash, not at road 🤣😂😄

I dont like the dodgy stepper motor gear in plastic that are not robust enough on the ride by wire system on KTM. Too many expensive repairs on a premium priced bike that should be far better, Same with BMW. It puts me off them. You cant beat japanese build quality, reliability especially suzuki in line 4s. Theyre that good for big mileages.
