Another fail is that Toyota's widening the stance on the TH and Pro by 3" to compete with the ZR2 and Raptor is is a sham. 100% correct on the natural aspirated engines are more reliable than turbos. But unfortunately EPA standards from the government are making stricter emission standards. It’s not just Toyota but all manufacturers will be affected. That being said I think Toyota would be the most reliable out of the competitors. TRD Pro Tundra only comes in IForceMax. I bet the new 4Runner Pro when ever it comes out will be the same only offered in IForceMAx.
@SamkoWorkShop
@SamkoWorkShop Жыл бұрын
Yep the mandatory iforce max on the pros is a major disappointment. And your probably right toyta will end up being the most reliable eventually. But they sure did drop the ball and even hid stuff. Like calling the pro and th wide stance. The raptor and the zr2 is true wide stance with longer a arms to allow for more suspension travel and articulation. Toyota wide stance is just wheel off set and no suspension gain. Plus all the other stuff I mentioned really makes it disappointment for me personally.

I don't agree. The current (3rd gen)Tacoma is the worst pickup we've gotten since they put the 3.0 in some trucks. The 3.5 is a car motor Toyota threw in there when they should have kept the 4.0 like the 4Runner and previous Tacoma. The poor transmission can't figure out what to do with the output of the 3.5. The seating position sucks compared to any Toyota pickup before it. I would rather have this new Tacoma all day long but the problem now is Toyota and their dealers are screwing people over with inventory levels and markups. This new Tacoma won't be worth what you'll end up having to pay. Get a first gen Tundra with a 4.7 V8 if you want a good truck that's the same size as a current Tacoma. It came out over 20 years ago and is a better truck than the 3rd gen Tacoma in every way. Hell, the T-100 with the 3.4 is better. I like Toyota pickups but there are way too many 3rd gen Tacoma fanboys out there that probably have no idea how good Toyota trucks used to be.

I agree with everything you're saying about toyota. They are taking a step backwards in the wrong direction. They are losing alot of the legendary qualities that have always put toyota above the rest. If you remember back in the mid 1980's toyota offered a 4 cyl turbo in their pickups for a couple of years. I had a few friends that had them and they ran great until around 120000 miles and then the turbos all failed with replacements costing in the thousands for repair. That's why toyota discontinued the turbo units and kept the naturally aspirated 4 and 6 cyl. Yes all companies have made improvements to turbo systems but a turbo motor will never be as dependable as a naturally aspirated motor and I don't want to depend on a turbo for a daily driver. As far as the ford vs chevy goes I would spend a little more to get the ford as I've had better reliability with ford over chevy.

The fords always gave me the most trouble of all of them. mostly little stuff and never left me stranded. but lots of trips to dealer with the fords. Never had to bring a chevy to a dealer for anything in my life and only 1 toyota (my 22 tacoma) has had to go into the shop 3 times already. Funny how all that stuff plays out. I would not hesitate to buy any of them and now toyota is no longer above but now right in the mix with all the others.

Looks like Jeep may get a few trade ins next year. I was excited to see what Toyota came out with and comparatively, it’s a little lacking from all the research I’ve done as well. Jeep hasn’t really done anything super exciting, but availability and reliability and cost for options won me over with the Gladiator and they are supposedly giving better tire size and gear options from the factory in ‘24. The only true competitor in my mind and for me now is the GMC Canyon AT4X and that is pushing the 4 cyl turbo fascination as well and at 40-50k miles a year there’s no time for complex problems to arise.

No denying a i4 turbo will never be as reliable or handle as many miles as a naturally aspirated v6. Thats proven in every car manufacturer. Toyotas resell value is base on its long standing vehicle longevity. With the new motor it will be 7 or 8 years before that longevity is proven in a truck platform that has to tow, off road, haul gear etc. Will Toyota probably be the most reliable eventually once the bugs are worked out, yes. Most likely. But for 20 years we have had 300k mile tacomas. 4 runners and tundras. Those days are gone in my opinion. And since now Toyota is the same as Ford and chevy with a baby turbo motor and the loss of that longevity putting Toyota on equal ground as the others. Ford and chevy offer much more truck with way more capabilities for more reasonable prices. And none of the Toyota quirks like horrible paint, rusting frames, super finicky 4x4 engagement, horrible locker engagement, locker only available in 4 low, etc. Is the bew tacoma beautiful, sure is. Will it sell well sure will. Is it the best option for me knowing what I know about trucks, definitely not.

As far as the reliability, truth is nobody knows yet. A few hybrud Tundras have 40k miles, saw one with 70k. Too early to tell. The electrical side of a hybrid is usually the most maintanence free and straightforward part of the vehicle. 12 years later you need a new battery, that's about it. The turbos, we'll see. My wife has a hybrid and the EV side takes away idling strains, and supplements gaps in power. Show me another way to get 465 lb-ft of torque and ~27 mpgs. The off-road midsize segment gonna shift dramatically by time these '24 turbos & hybrid motors burn up. Toyota is going solid state battery & full electrical drive trains by 2032 (possibly earlier, esp in their car segments.) That'll produce some massive jumps in clearance and wheel control. It's coming. For now, a decked out TH with a 6' bed is what I'm preordered on. The iForce comes with an 100K mi warranty, the battery 10 years and I intend to hammer that battery by in the way of its 2400W inverter & 10% grade climbs up in the mountains. I still use trucks 75% for work, and where I offload is drier/more conducive to play it safe & winch in sketch conditions. Mudding isn't in my off-road vocabulary / I see where you're coming from in terms of the front lockers. Nothing last forever, although the last rig I bought was a 2001 Ram 4x4 Off-road trim. Engine & transmission still running excellent, everything else around the vehicle is disintegrating. I give this new Taco ~12 years max, it'll be worth a bit more on the salvage (more aluminum on these) LOL. New tech and better features coming. Gotta go with the flow and be thankful the MPG - if even incremental - is improved. About the competition on the new Tacos: thing is you're lucky to get a '24 Ranger Raptor, Gladiator or ZR2 ordered & delivered now that the UAW strike has halted big 3 production. Lot of orders will shift to Toyota, and the dealerships will be taking note of that, so yes the pricing will get jacked. The way it goes when supply & demand gets thrown out of whack, not to mention if the UAW gets their way, those mid size Ford & GM rigs are gonna be super pricey. Last note on the front recovery points: that is a gripe but 1/2 the models are getting air dams, the other half are gonna get customized later by owners with new winch bumpers anyway.

Toyota is just using their name about reliability to sell vehicles to people who do not know much about technology. There are already issues with the new 3.5l hot-V turbo. Now they offer only small turbo engine for a heavy vehicle. This turbo will need to be replaced often if the vehicle will be loaded. Please research the new AT. NOT KIND OF! It is disappointing. They had the opportunity to hit it out of the park and put a hurting on the competition. No front, no longer travel, I agree with the engine choice being a failure, I agree this truck will never be as reliable as the previous generations. It's also too techy, more electrical items to break. They gained a wider stance with offset wheels, not longer control arms. It sure looks nice but extremely disappointing.

People who will take a $20k plus haircut and "trade up" for a front locker in a different vehicle...do you guys realize you can get a front locker installed for less than $1500? My 22 year old landcruiser was great, but $3k to make it extremely more capable was a hell of a lot cheaper than buying a Raptor or G-Wagon. Less than a set of really good all terrain tires and you too can be front locked. Also, tow hooks? Looking "beefy" doesn't matter, all that matters is if they are tested and rated by engineers to do the job. The guys who spent 70k+ on tundras but crying over spending another $200 on tow hooks are just silly.

Great points. But for many adding a front locker voids warranty and that is a problem for them. Also big difference on the front end component strength between a vehicle that is equipped to handle a front locker. Example the jeeps have Dana 30 series in the none locker models and a Dana 40 series in the ones that fo have a front locker. But you make great points. There is always a way to make it like you want.

Blame CAFE regulations for the increased wheelbase and track of the new Tacoma. Pickup trucks in the north American market have been increasing in size since the mid 2000's because fuel economy for the light duty truck class of vehicle is based on the area of the vehicles footprint. The larger the footprint the easier it is to meet the fuel economy regulations. This is one of the main reasons US auto manufacturer's stopped producing sedans and small pickup trucks like the regular cab short box Tacoma. Toyota's new trail hunter will be hellish driving off road, especially on tight wooded trails. Owners will need to pray that they don't come upon an obstacle that requires them to back track.

The only challenge Toyota created for itself is justified for decades how their lack innovation and competitiveness was the recipe behind the reliability. Now it has to convince its customer base that old message doesn’t apply. I actually believe that was only part of their success. Toyota was known for its manufacturing / supply chain processes and quality control. These engines are going to feel much more effortless than the old 3.5 and 4.0. They are actually detuned compared to the Crown and Grand Highlander. Reliability is not going to be an issue. I believe the reason it has more torque than the other two is because the drive train can actually handle it.

@@SamkoWorkShop just look at Ford. Their QC is terrible. But their engines have actually been really good. All their issues have been other stuff. Bronco roof panels etc. They had some valve issues on the 2.7 that affected only a handful of vehicles. It was to do with the supplier of the valves and was rectified, but not to do with it being turbocharged. I believe the 3.5 on the Tundra had some teething issues that were quickly fixed too. Again, prob to do with it being a new engine in production, not as much the fact it uses turbos. I guess the lesson is don’t buy first year production run on anything, but the technology itself should be good.

I certainly understand your point, Sam. Anybody who needs a new midsized truck I would direct them to the NA V6 Frontier. Having said that, if you are just leasing, I think the Tacoma Limited would be the sweet spot. I think Toyota will be the most reliable in the battle of the 4 bangers. Also at least the limited has the creature comforts missing from some of the competition: vented seats, memory seats, adaptive suspension, with class leading hp and torque (with of course the exception of the Ranger Raptor's class leading 400hp).

You are only as strong as your weakest link. Rear independent suspensions DO NOT belong on trucks. I am going to say that Toyota is ONLY keeping a Leaf Sping variant is so they can list a higher available tongue weight. I my be wrong and I HOPE I am, but this is how it has been done for years, listing the highest available as the standard number across most manufacturers. If I am wrong then this is why you have less ground clearance etc. to compensate for the lack of strength you get out of rear independent suspensions for towing and payloads.
