Toyota fan boy here. Bought my '22 4Runner in the middle of the pandemic. And this man is 100000% correct on the buying experience. I also had to call 20+ dealers, put a couple of deposits down, even had to intercept the truck at the shipping port, all just to get what i wanted, and even THEN they made me pay for $2,000 worth of extra stuff I didn't want. I originally was going to get a TRD Pro (I had saved up enough to afford one according to MSRP). But when I went looking for one, I had multiple dealers look at me straight in the eye and said they were asking $25,000 ABOVE MSRP. I wasn't about to pay $75,000 for a truck that came out in 2009. I decided to step down to a much lower trim, and spent the extra money I had saved up to built it instead. Love my 5th Gen 4Runner. Def feels like the end of an era tho. Love Toyota's. But things do feel like they are changing. Not to mention my local dealers charge an arm and a leg for anything, and mark ups have never stopped. Makes it hard for me to recommend it to others now.

@Jason-Samko7 ай бұрын
Take my and anyone's opinion with a grain of salt. They are just that, opinions. But personally I rank full size trucks in this order from my knowledge. Ram, chevy, ford, toyota if you are buying new today. With that said! Research each brand to find the trim level that best suits your needs for each brand. Then go drive each of them. Then when you have it narrowed down to 2 ask questions and do some research on each. Then make your decision taking I to account price and negotiating options. Most importantly, all brands today are about equal. All can have big and small issues and should be expected to have some recalls and warranty needs. An extended warranty today is a great idea. Don't buy your warranty thru the dealer. But it from the manufacturer directly after the sale (most will let you finance the warranty for 1 year interest free) and the cost will be 1/2 or more less than the dealer tells you.

I'm in agreement with a lot of what you are saying and I have 3 toyotas in the garage still, obviously all older/reliable. The problem I see is there are plenty of high income people that just don't care about the price/quality of anything anymore. People are just buying based on how cool things look or how fast their truck goes in a race. They don't care about long term reliability, they cycle vehicles every year or two, then bash the people like you (and me) that are calling out these issues. Case in point, look at the Turndra spun bearing issue like you mentioned, if you visit the forums it will be nothing but fanboys saying "it's a low number relative to how many they sold". They are completely missing the point(s), the truck shouldn't be spinning bearings at low mileage, and if they need a new engine, like you said, everything better be new or just give me an entirely new truck. There is a reason the Tundras are sitting on lots and discounts are starting.

I took the plunge in late 2023 and bought a 2023 TRD Off Road Tacoma. I had a lot of the same experience with the company that you described. But I'm glad I didn't wait a year - the 2024 trucks are out of my price range.
@Jason-Samko7 ай бұрын
That 2023 will last you many years and many miles! You got one of the last best made trucks available. It's all down hill from here in the truck world.
@itsallminor61337 ай бұрын
They are discounting the 24s at some dealerships. It's not much more than 23. Depending on package few k . I would wait anyway you never want to buy the first model year, or really the second or third either in this case its a entirely new truck from the ground up. I'm sure its going to be fine once it's out a while. But i would definitely wait a bit. I bought the 23 as well but for a different reason. It's really a throw back to 2010 or before. Actually the horrible seating position and drum brakes goes back to the 1st gen. You can feel the old Toyota in the 3rd Gen. Because much of it's 20+ years old. They added some electronic b.s. but it's still there. The drum brakes as I said. Emergency brake handle you pull up. The seating position. Leaf springs of course. It's so outdated. Even the 3.5 engine designed off the 4.0. it's weak. The 6 speed auto not much improved from it's predecessor, perhaps worse. The truck even new is actually very very old. Not quite the feeling you get driving the 1st gen or 80s (they were even worse) but still the feeling of that old school Toyota. All the faults from previous gens that were never fixed. Makes it quirky. Other than the 3rd Gen Tacoma. The only other thing we had left in the midsized like that was frontier. Which is still outdated and has it's own quirkiness. The problem isn't really Toyota going to a 4 cyl turbo. Toyota had similar motors decades ago. The 4 cylinder is more Toyota than the V6. 4 cyl is more Nissan than the Nissan V6 as well. It's more the chassis/platform change. It's totally different than the last 40 years of Toyota truck. And all the safety things. The ride. Brakes obviously. It's really all been updated. Improved perhaps. It's a entire new era. The V6 should run a long time. In many ways the 24 is greatly improved. The lines of it, the 4 cyl is actually closer to the original Toyota trucks. Look carefully at the 80s and 90s Toyota. The outside and the 4 cyl is not out of Toyotas heritage. If the 24 has crappy plastic interior well, the 80s and 90s ones did too. It's the other changes inside, chassis underneath. While perhaps improved wont act like the Toyota we know. I personally would probably buy the new gen Toyota Tacoma in 3 years if I needed a vehicle. And maybe feel even better about putting Toyotas heritage stripe colors on it than I have my 3rd Gen. It's just too new yet. But people that say the new gen Tacoma isn't Toyota need to take a real long look and maybe read and look at some pictures of Toyota history. It's definitely Toyota. Just a different front cabin for larger Americans now that might be a lot taller and most probably obese. Americans who want electronic gizmos and a american government with lots of politics and rules. It cant stay Japanese forever importing so much to North America over decades. But the looks and motor of the new tacoma gen is definitely Toyota. I would still buy the frontier first though. Get the last of the dinosaurs....

KZbin 3rd gen Tundra problems, and you'll get a taste of what's in store for the new 4Runner and Tacoma. Cheaply made and assembled interiors, blown engines, faulty mechanical parts, etc. Unfortunately, the automotive industry and consumers now have the cell phone industry mentality of trading in every other year. I remember in the old days of going down to the dealer and looking at their inventory and picking the model that offered most of what you were looking for. To custom order a car was rare. Usually it was a customer that wanted a unique combination of options not normally available. Now days, people are trying to order bare-bone models or models with a highly desirable option without a higher trim level. Naturally the automaker is not interested in catering to those types of customers. To put it simply, they know what their stuff is worth and don't want to lower their profit margins.

@@Jason-Samko GM has treated me well in the past. I had an issue with my previous Colorado where the lights on the HVAC buttons burned out. It was going to cost a ridiculous 900 bucks since they replace the whole unit, but I was about 2k past the bumper to bumper warranty. I called GM and they paid for 80% of it making it much more bearable. Subaru is another company that stands by their products. I had a 2016 Crosstrek and again I was 1k past the bumper to bumper warranty. The CV boot tore and the fix was 500 bucks because they just take out the whole axle as the replacement. I called up Subaru and they agreed to pay for the whole thing since the axle was considered part of the drivetrain warranty. I also read in the warranty that apparently CV boots aren't covered under warranty at all. I have found it doesn't hurt to ask the manufacturer. The only thing though is I got a new ZR2 factory ordered the way I want it. Well, the camera module is defective. I've got no back up camera or 360 camera function right now and I got the truck in March. Not fun, but GM has been tracking it at least. The dealer tried their best to address it by fitting me into the service department next day. They had to hold onto it for a week. I've reached out to GM and once they issue is addressed they said we can talk compensation for the inconvenience. I'm hoping it's not like 50 GM reward points and something more substantial. Give me a hard tonneau cover or something. We shall see once the issue is fixed. producing on allocation is an effort by manufactures to build vehicles with the parts that are currently available or at the price point they require...soon it will be like in the beginning..."you can have any color you want as long as it is black"---Henry Ford sometime in the early 20th century.
@itsallminor61337 ай бұрын
Yes it's a algorithm. Individual special orders mess up production. The algorithm I expect depends on what is mostly like to sell, how many, previous dealer sales. So I suspect they will allocate say more limited models to California and more offroad models to North Dakota. Less wealthy areas will get more base models. Areas more likely to buy or want rwd will get more rwd. Because it's successful 98 percent of the time. Where I am we get a lot of off-roads and sr5 with upgrade. Not as many limited models a few but not a lot. 2wds are rare around the dealers here. But if you live in south Texas probably a lot more 2wd is allocated. It really makes sense. Unless you are trying to get a certain truck with limited allocation to your area. I wanted a sunroof. Finding one in the off-road trim around here was about impossible. Plenty of off-roads. Just no sunroof. For me to get my sunroof it takes a sunroof that's allocated elsewhere. All production runs are preplanned and parts pre made. If they let 2000 extra people get special orders with sunroofs it messes up the system. They likely trust dealers response to adjust the algorithm. So the 2000 undelivered sunroofs would require the dealers of those to ask for more trucks with sunroofs. Lot of it I think comes back to dealers and how much they communicate
@Jason-Samko7 ай бұрын

@itsallminor61337 ай бұрын
@@Jason-Samko did you see my post about how many vehicles they sell a year? It's stream lined. You may not have wanted your running boards but they sell so many it's more costly to change a order. You'll either buy it (which you did) or someone else will. I wanted my sunroof. I bought without one anyway. If I didn't someone else would buy it. They give plenty of choices they figure someone will buy them. Finding a standard transmission or a base model might be difficult. But really they aren't trying to make everyone happy just appease the majority. And as you and I showed. We'll buy it anyway. The packages are standardized, colors standardized. Occasional unicorn but mostly it's cooky cutter. They sell millions. The other manufacturers aren't so easy either. I caught a article on someone that put in a order for a loaded Ford Maverick. Months goes by. Goes into production. It's not loaded though. Dealer says he can't stop it. Take it or leave it. The guy takes the truck and then orders another maverick. Same thing. He's just trying to get a loaded Maverick. My suspicion is. Yes. They say you can order. You can then in turn order. But that does not mean they will actually fulfill your order at ford (or anywhere). And after waiting months if it's not exactly what you ordered you'll probably take it anyway (like he did) because you've already waited months

It’s sad how Toyota is treating its loyal customers, you are absolutely correct, I was a Toyota fun, my family still have several. I was in the market for the new Tacoma TRD Pro but there is no way I’ll pay more than $72K (out the door) for a midsize pick up.

I was able to work with my salesman and custom order my 2021 TRD off-road Tacoma with the specific features requested within allowable options (I wanted trd pro but opted out because sun roof was a deal breaker and it wasn’t opt out able) I was also able to get side steps off during COVID time it was built at factory and I had a wait time but was definitely worth the 3 month wait during used car shortage. I ended up selling my 2017 SR5 for more after driving for 3 years than I bought it for (bought new/used from their maintenance dept with 13k miles)… maybe Louisiana dealers are better than where ever you are? Doubt it.

I totally agree with you. I'm trying to get the 2024 TRD Off Road Premium without the Moonroof, and it's proving to be quite challenging. The one I found comes with a Moonroof and is still in production. I've asked the dealer to remove the Port Installed Options and I'm okay with keeping the Moonroof if I end up liking it. However, the dealer mentioned that they can't remove the "All-Weather Floor Liners and Cargo Tray Package" because they're included in all the TRD Off Road Premium models. They do have only one(1) TRD Off Road without the Moonroof, but it has $2900 worth of Port Installed Options, which defeats the purpose. All I want is the cheapest 2024 4Runner TRD Off Road!!

I bought my 2021 TRD OR used with 29k miles in November 2023 from Toyota of Cleveland, TN. I paid $38k for it. I wanted a manual in red. Took me three days of internet searching to find one. I had to drive to a dealer about 2 hours away to buy. Called them before coming. Took me about 45 minutes to buy it paying with cash. It was completely painless. I went about an hour before closing. I got every option I wanted on it. They offered all of the maintenance packages to add on. I just simply said no, and moved on. I wasn’t a local buyer, so no sense all of that extra warranty stuff. I’m not denying any of the claims you are making. I think they are very valid claims. However, my experience buying one used was quite a bit easier than buying one new I imagine. I’m very happy with my purchase and I’m very glad I did not try to buy one new. I originally wanted 2024, but decided a used 2021 was just as good for me. I’m glad I went the route I did instead of the painful process you are describing. Thanks for sharing this content.

I hear ya and I've commented negatively on Toyotas recent Tacoma. What did I get in reply; you obviously haven't driven one. Well, when you start building 4 cylinders with turbos on a frame truck, I think things are going the wrong direction. I still have a 1995 Toyota Pickup and it runs great. It drives like a friggin' rock but I expect it will likely last another 20 years if it doesn't rust away on me. So, yes I'm sure a new Toyota drives much more comfortably than my old pickup but I doubt many of these new trucks will still be on the road in 20-30 years. I did not know about all these other changes and that's good to know. Thanks for the honesty! Now the problem is, what's left that is dependable and affordable; maybe a Frontier???

I think people forget that the early Toyota hilux and 4Runners came with 4 bangers, some with factory turbo. Many are still on the road today with 300,000 plus miles!! The 20r, 22r and the 22re are the most reliable motors Toyota made!
@Jason-Samko7 ай бұрын
Well said! And your spot on in the assumtion that all new trucks are junk compared to what they used to be. Frontier is a great truck and proven very well. the gm and chevy trucks has the best customer care right now and jeep/ram are getting more realistic with their prices. So there are some good options. But the days of quality and reliability are gone. We now enter the era of disposable trucks that cost way too much.

I love your videos bro, people need to call out greedy corporates. I currently own a 2017 Hilux and a 2022 VW Tiguan but if I have to buy a pick up it will always be a Toyota, daily driver I usually would go Mercedes Benz. In our market however, the dealers are open to negotiations and I am quite good at that and will never pay recommended prices. Sticker prices never bother me because I would never pay that. I negotiated my way to a great deal by going to 4 dealers and make them beat the previous best offer. If consumers stop buying, the dealers would fold trust me 😊

@@Jason-Samko It is more agricultural and very good offroad but not the most fastest or comfortable, but is bulletproof as hell, hence why the global Land Cruiser will carry on with the diesel from the Hilux. It is the truck you buy if you intend on just doing commercial/agricultural stuff and it is quite popular with mines and car hire companies because it is one hell of a reliable engine. In Fact, globally the upcoming 2025 Hilux will retain that engine

My wife is looking at me like I'm off my rocker that I don't trust Ford or Toyota any more, but I don't.
