Welcome back to RBR! Today, we’re taking an in-depth look at the #Porsche #Taycan GTS amidst the current EV market turmoil. The Taycan, once a hot commodity, has seen its market value drop significantly. But does this mean it’s a bad time to buy, or could it actually be the perfect opportunity to get your hands on one? Let’s explore!
You’ve probably heard about the EV market plummeting, with models like the Taycan Turbo losing more than 50% of their value. But why has this happened? Is it just a temporary blip, or a sign of a permanent shift in the EV market? In this video, we’ll dig into what’s driving these changes and what it means for you if you’re thinking of buying one.
I’ll also share my personal experiences with the #porscheTaycan. I’ve owned two, a Cross Turismo 4S and a Sport Turismo 4S, so I will also impart my own experience. For those considering a purchase, we’ll ask the key question: Is the Taycan GTS a smart buy in the market today?
To do this, we will go beyond the market discussion and take a detailed look at one of the best models: the Taycan GTS. We will do a recap on what makes this EV stand out, and walk through its engineering and technical details, as well as performance. I’ll also take you through a real-world test of the Taycan’s range on a 450-mile road trip to Scotland-did it meet expectations, or fall short?
With the new Taycan models on the horizon, we’ll also compare the current GTS to the brand NEW Taycan in terms of tech, range and design. Is it worth holding out for the latest and greatest, or does the GTS still hold its own? You’ll get all the insights in this video.
And of course we will go for a drive, where I’ll give you my honest take on whether now is the right time to buy a Taycan, or if it’s better to wait. Could the market dip further, or is this the low point? We’ll consider all the angles before you make your decision.

Just imagine the depreciation these German cars will have when cheaper high end Chinese electric cars come into the market. And yes they are on par, quality and tech wise, not so much with design.

Re: Obsolescence Resistance. Skin deep beauty hasn’t cut it in the (Tesla-only) world of OTAUs enabled via vertically integrated electronic components that CAN’T be done when most of them are provided by subcontractors that struggle to communicate verbally, let alone electronically, with their counterparts. Thus, only Tesla & (partially, tofu dreg) BYD are able to continually refresh their products. Plus, (CCS “innovator”) VW-related cars are sadly the most retrograde, in that regard.

Personally I feel sorry for those early Taycan buyers, they were stepping into the unknown and they paid the price for it. Facts that many ignored, big saloon cars generally don’t hold their value, even ICE versions so a new technology EV one was not necessarily the right model to introduce. We have one in the family but we did it PCP back when Porsche thought they had the pricing right so are stepping out of it not costing us a packet. Only my opinion but because this technology is ever improving I think it’s mad to buy outright at the moment, better to either lease or PCP, at least with both forms you know the end cost for the period of ownership and if you don’t like it walk away.

Of course you will still see a drop after you spend £70k on a second-hand GTS, if you buy one at that price as you suggest. It will drop to £40k in no time, then after 8 years the battery warranty runs out. All large four-door saloons have always lost a lot of money, that's nothing new. Look at the price of a four-year-old Panamera for comparison, the cheapest is £45k, only £5k more than a similar aged Taycan. The new Taycan is a huge step-up with about a 100 mile increase in range.

I agree with everything you said.a lot of non ev owners worry about range but if you can charge at home or have access to any public fast charger it really isn’t an issue if your ev can do around 250 in the summer and 200 in the winter. I started my electric journey with a i3 with 120 mile range which dropped to as low as 75 in the winter. Great for living in the city I had no issues but I moved to a rural location and it could no longer do. I got a Mercedes eqc with 250 mile range and I’ve never had to worry ever again! My next car will be a taycan, most likely sport turismo. EVs for me make THE BEST daily drivers, I get depreciation anxiety though so for me that’s the only kicker with EVs. My eqc is doing OK so far as I picked it up used!

I will say that I’m in the market in the US for a used Taycan GTS which is why this video popped up on my algorithm. The values have dropped over here, but no where near what is going on over there in the UK. In the US, you will be hard pressed as of Aug 30th to find a 2022 GTS under 90k and I’m being conservative. Most are still going for close to 100k or more. That’s the 2022 version. The 2023’s and 24’s are even higher. This video said in the Uk, you can get them in the 70k range? The rear wheel drives and some 4S models are going for that depending on how they are optioned.

I absolutely love Porsche as a whole, however, I will never purchase an EV! I have owned a new 911 RS America and absolutely loved it. Also owned a 2007 Carrera 4S and loved that also. Like many enthusiasts, I am attempting for years to purchase a new GT3 without success due to the games that dealers and others are playing with all of us. It's a shame that Porsche refuses to take control of the price wars that are currently facing all of us. In my humble opinion, Porsche should eliminate all dealers and start selling their cars themselves through centralized Porsche dealerships all managed by Porsche directly!!! Until then, I will continue giving my money to others.

About a year and a half ago I was in the position to buy a new 'daily', i really like sedans for that, so I went to my local BMW, Mercedes and Porsche. They had available 330i plug in hybrid, C43 and base Taycan sedan with some preconfigure goods. Where I'm from they don't import the high end versions b/c they are a pretty penny, you can order them. I went for the Taycan knowing that in my country there is ZERO public charging infrastructure, but is was for daily use basically for my metropolitan area which includes 6 cities with an average temperature of 33 celcius during the day. I'm very happy with my purchase I've put around 15,000 km in that time.I charge it at my house every 2 or 3 days, perfect for my needs. I always keep an ICE SUV for my long trips. That has been my experience overall.

Big luxury ICE cars (S class / A8 / 7 series) always depreciate steeply, so the Taycan has followed this. However historically Porsche cars have always had a low curve, take a 10 year old Cayman, they are still £30K which is half a new base 781 version for example. Does a 3 year old Taycan, that is 20% in range “less” than a brand new one offer great value….for sure if you can spend £50K and not worry about losing money. However how low will they go, if Porsche can’t shift the previous gen new ones in stock and the 1.1 new ones have “incentives” or just end up in fleet? Great pod as ever…

Agreed with you, as a daily driver car, this is the perfect car. personally i won’t be able to get back from my CT TS, that i bought half the retail price, and shouldn’t depreciate a lot more quickly. The range is a mindset, finally better experience in long range trips with my wife, so happy to have 20min stop time to time. Compared to my previous Macan GTS, no comparison, faster, more comfortable, more space.. of course move to the new one : no way !!

The base issue is ignorance towards battery tech + not enough infrastructure for battery maintenance/repairs. People are too scared to get a secondhand EV because they think they are already half dead .. which if you watched Rory of Top Gear's recent videos, that just isnt the case. If EV manufacturers want their brands to signify longevity then they need to invest infrastructure to compete with what exists today for ICE vehicles.

For me it is buying today and out of date tomorrow. Buying a phone or tv, it isn’t that important. But the technology is changing so fast. I am old enough to remember the video player era, and the best system, Betamax, was beaten by VHS! Solid state is coming. The key drivers are range and charging time. These factors are improving all the time. Not there yet for me. Cost of these cars means it’s a worry to buy if the technology is updated so quickly and impacts the value overnight. Early days, and technology is changing fast. I get it. But this isn’t a phone purchase!

I have driven at length a 4S. Porsche are cagey about weight, and probably aren't being totally truthful in their declarations when they say 2.7 tonnes. I was also told with 2 adults and "on the road" & "ready to drive" somewhere around 3.1 tonnes. The car feels every kilo. It's absolutely no sports car, and it's not as rabid as a fast Tesla (which makes me feel ill!). The air suspension is VERY detached, and you get to trust it's going to go round a corner, but you feel absolutely nothing. Therefore it's no fun to drive, and feels totally synthetic. Plus if you drive it like a sports car, you don't get anywhere near the range, and you can literally see your tyres wearing out, and at £1400 a set, that will become an issue buying a set every year. So you get free electricity? That really isn't going to help in the long run. If you get it through your business, it makes better financial sense, but you're still left with unrewarding drive.

I’m struggling with the argument of “old EV’s not being desirable because they are inferior to new EV, but old ICE is still desirable because it can do the same as new ICE”. New ICE are generally superior more capable machines than old ICE, be that top speeds, acceleration, ride, handling etc…..in a similar way to New EV’s being superior & more capable than older EV’s, be that top speed, acceleration, ride, handling, or indeed range & shorter charging times. Something else is at play, otherwise old ICE would be depreciating the same as old EV because new ICE are usually better than the model they are replacing. Maybe, the delta between an out going ICE model & the replacement new ICE model is smaller than the delta between an old EV vs new EV model, certainly EV’s are developing at a faster pace than the more mature ICE models……but, I’m not even sure this explains it, because in the video a very old 911 was shown as still being very desirable so the delta in performance would be larger than from one EV model to the next.

250 miles is way less than 410. Sweet spot is 500 from charging infrastructure perspective. Completely removes any range anxiety. 800 mi is not necessary. Ones a car has 500+ miles, there is no reason to update to one with 800mi. I owned evs for the very 6 years and battery degradation is tiny.

Comparing EVS to phones is exactly the correct analogy. Mod cars and EVS even more so have become generic and pretty much offer the same features regardless of brand. A lot of this has to do with regulation but many consumers just want something reliable with heaps of features and don't really care about a logo on the front. Unfortunately. Jeff, save for very few examples. It's going to be harder and harder for EVS to stand out and that hits the luxury brands the most.

Great report, much of it also applies to my car, I bought a BMW i4-40 a year and a half ago and thought HP finance would give me a better result than PCP. Wrong, and I'm feeling the pain with 50% depreciation. Love the car (including the Hans Zimmer sound effects) and it's plenty fast enough for me, like you I don't need sport mode, and the range is 250 in winter and 300 in summer which does me for a week. I normally change my car every two years but I think I'll hang onto this one because (a) I think it's great and (b) I don't want another horrible depreciation hit. Anyone who buys a similar used i4 now is getting a bargain, same as the Taycan.

Lets be honest the manufacturers were greedy especially since 2022. They released cars at excessive prices as EV's were seen as the new must have cars. Most people looked past the fact that you are supposed to keep the battery between 20 and 80 % most of the time so using 60% of he capacity. Porsche rapid charging will degrade the battery faster. I nearly bought a Taycan but was put off by the Lithium Ion battery being so expensive plus the number of faults drivers reported from cabin heaters to rear lights, cooling fans and brakes. I think prices have flat lined at £40k because no seller wants to give the car away. I prefer the front of the first gen cars.

Thanks for the vid mate. Apart from the deprecation(which is inevitable) it's nice to see someone not talking down on an EV for a change 😅 Honestly for a daily and if one does not drive long distances EVs are where it's at for me. Specially performance versions of EVs you sort of get the best of two worlds(not really but still). Most folks will laugh but I think the 2024 Model 3 Performance is a baby Taycan in many ways. I would love to own a Taycan GTS but even the used ones are much much expensive than A new 3P here in Sweden(the 3P will also deprecation at lot). For sure the 3P is missing many of the things a Taycan has like a indicator stalk 😂 ( mainly radar, sensors and a real 360 camera). But it has the performance for daily stuff, enough space at least for me, it's quite refined on the 24 model and the ride is pretty good and its also pretty efficient. However with the pricing you guys have in the UK for the Taycans it's crazy value.

19:25 There is a 'but' to the 20 minute charging stops though. As far as I understand it, fast charging has a negative impact on the lifetime health of the battery and leads to reduction in overall capacity if it is continually fast charged. This is what Harry was saying in terms of two 24,000 mile electric cars of equal spec not being of equal value. The one which has only ever been slow charged overnight at home will be worth more and have better battery health than the one that was constantly fast charged. However there is no standard way to report this on used EVs that are for sale, leading people to be weary of buying a dud.

Truth with the Taycan, it’s more complicated than just comparing the economic side to an iPhone… many where bought by business people on cheap tax incentives here in the UK, it’s a victim of this rule and high initial sales, 1-2 year old leased cars then flooding the market and with the second owner only being a private buyer, far more cars than buyers exist. Many business owners selling these cars are probably not losing heavily if the loss is a tax write off? And if on a PCP/lease type deal a private owner is limited in exposure too, it’s VW finance that have had to take a massive hit on the difference between the promised buy back price and its true follow on resale value.

Reasons for the Taycan eye-watering depreciation are multifaceted and I explain it below. I fortunately pulled the plug on a GTS Sport Turismo beginning of 2023 having received an allocation. Very glad I did, even though it's an awesome car. Like everything in economics, if something skyrockets, it will plummet at a similar rate. And Taycan used prices skyrocketed through 2022, an outcome of a lack of supply because of a microchip shortage; the first signs of inflation; and a lack of available finance. The only way from there was down at a similar rapid pace and like in physics, something hurtling that fast will crash spectacularly. And that is exactly what happened. I had a suspicion that would happen though was also leaving the UK, so even less point in having a relatively unused car in storage. While the reasons for this include the updated model, which was anticipated even beginning of last year containing new tech; the microchip availability issue being solved; competitor cars launching on the market that provided a similar ride quality/fun for half the price or less; the lack of available finance; but mostly because the Taycan was the most popular EV model for business owners and salary sacrifice schemes - because of the excellent tax incentives. Many of those were on 3 year terms 2020>2023, so a flood of used Taycan's hit the market creating the perfect storm. Used buyers held off expecting further falls meaning inventory continued increasing, and used prices reversed even more aggressively. Basically two years of inverted depreciation from the pandemic to 2022, where used prices were higher than new, reversed aggressively into 2023 where the the typical compounding of depreciation from 2020-23 all hit in the same year. Panicked, Porsche discontinued the GTS to try and maintain some price balance, but it's not enough. Had I went ahead with my £130k optioned GTS, within 6 months I would have lost £30k at least. Annualised, some 30-40% depreciation! What made this worse for many new Porsche customers is they purchased it via their business or salary sacrifice expecting used prices to remain high. They otherwise could not afford the car. In 3-6 months, many of these people were facing losses of £20-30k and where they are stuck on a 3 year finance term, they will eventually write off a total of £45-80k depending on the model they purchased and how imprudent they got with options. The lesson here with all luxury EVs is: wait, and then buy second hand UNLESS you get an excellent PCP or finance deal.

I'm English but live in Germany. Over here, you pay 0.25% tax, per month, on the new value of an electric car. It could be years old, you still pay that much tax. At the moment, the German government is thinking of increasing the top level of this tax relief from 70,000 to 94,000 Euros for new cars, net price. This would allow the possibility of leasing the BMW i5 40e as well as the Mercedes and Audi equivalents. I would love to lease a year old Tycan, especially as the prices have become so attractive. As the new price is over the planned 94,000 cap, I would have to pay 0,5% of the new price in tax. I love the car, but not that much...

If your aim is to reach your destiny as fast as you could, I agree, but if you are traveling with kids or just with some good company, in a seven hour drive you will probably use your refilling stops to have something to eat, go and pee, or just stretch your legs. Plus, on average your stop to refill a fuel tank is longer, it only takes five minutes to refill, but if you have cars in front you add their time too (that happens a lot in certain roads at certain times of the year, then you have to go an pay for the fuel, and maybe lose some other time in the shop choosing some snack and waiting on the queue.
