When the characters were adapted for the 1964 television series, Charles Addams named Wednesday based on the Monday's Child nursery rhyme line: "Wednesday's child is full of woe". Actress and poet Joan Blake, an acquaintance of Charles Addams, offered the idea for the name.

What I find interesting is that The characters started off in a comic but unnamed. What's even more strange is that Hanna-Barbera tried to set-up a series of a similar concept but couldn't because The Addams Family hit the T.V screens in 1964.

To answer your question, she's called Wednesday because "Wednesday's child is full of woe." The Gomez toy looks pretty good, Morticia doesn't look like her, Fester is workable. Wednesday is OK, and the frog was the one she was supposed to be taking apart in class, but she pulled a Frankenstein and he's dancing. Cousin it looks good, and Thing is OK.
