Super refreshing watching someone in the business that doesn't just suck up to manufacturers and regurgitate a press release. Those that know really appreciate the candor, mate - keep it up!

The 48v output is (according sources ) is 15kw and 65NM but this is to fill in the torque hole below 1500rpm, that is why the peak output doesn't increase, but the area under the curve (torque spread) will. And stop start is where the fuel saving is. The alternator is deleted, starter deleted, but 12v battery remains (for accessories) and a small lithium battery under the rear seat provides the small electrical assistance.

Spoke to the Toyota dealership near me, and was told that the 48v SR5's fuel consumption is: 6.2L/100km For Highway Driving. 8.0L/100km For In-Town Driving. Obviously if you are interested in a newer model with the 48v system inbuilt, I suggest either sending an email to a dealer or go in person and speak to a knowledgeable sales team member.

According to Eurobodalla Toyota this v active system has been worked on and in use overseas since about 2010. So it’s not that new a technology so should be pretty reliable, as a result of being tried and proven after 14 years.

The generator produces 48v to the 48v battery and then a DC-DC charger converts that to 12v for the accessory battery. Since the 12v battery doesn't need to run a starter motor, will they reduce its size? Also if you wanted to add a second battery for fridge and camping, would that be powered from the diminished 12v system or could you run a 48 to 12v dcdc charger directly from the 48v side? Also is the 48v battery covered by the 7 year unlimited km warranty or is it likely to wear out earlier like a 12v battery would?

The 48V battery must add weight too. I presume they take away the alternator, so perhaps the 48V motor generator adds 5kg or 10kg overall, leaving 15kg for the battery, or around 2kWh capacity. That is around three or four times the stored energy on an e-bike. Would I buy one? This kind of hybrid is only useful for urban driving and may help a fraction with regenerating some energy from long downhill runs. I doubt it will deliver 10% better efficiency on a country trip. Maybe they should say "upto 10%"? A corolla hybrid makes sense, a tourer hybrid is not worth the extra cost. So, no, I wouldn't bother with a Hilux hybrid which is generally intended for highway and offroad. Ofcourse if you are to use it as a work ute and work is urban based...maybe.

Tacoma i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain would be better … Runs a 2.4 lt turbo 4 cylinder with a hi performance Hybrid system which gives it 243kw and a massive 640nw of torque ... admittedly it's only for a number of seconds. Interesting to see if the SR5 Hybrid is any faster 0-100 to justify the extra 12kw and 65nw … and if you can turn off the start/stop but the Hybrid system still provides assistance like the M40i

That's a lot of extra stuff (and cost, both up front and no doubt ongoing) added to the vehicle to give a tiny improvement in power and economy...

It will reduce parasitic losses but not add to peak power/torque. There is not much you can do with a belt driven system.

I was just trying to reply to someone who said the start / stop annoys him. I actually have the Toyota Corolla Cross hybrid. It starts on EV so you would not even notice it. Slowing down at the traffic lights and stopping, it runs on EV and I don't even notice it.

I will be buying a Hybrid as it deletes the started motor, having better fuel consumption is a bonus. Plus this model comes with gas struts for the tail gate and more

@Milzbud It's not a hybrid in any way. These reviewers have no idea what they're talking about. The new 48v system can't drive the car. There is no electric motors. And you need the engine 100% of the time. Im a mechanic. This isn't a hybrid. People are retarded

Typical Toyota, sticking Band-Aids all over a very tired platform, doing the absolute minimum to try stop the bleeding of corporate sales by using unrealistic laboratory stop/start tests to game fuel economy figures to keep them in the game.
