In the section regarding preload and ride harshness, you mention that a suspension at full droop does not begin to articulate upwards until the force pushing up on the wheel exceeds the set preload. Is the force required to overcome preload transmitted directly to the chassis? (Assuming for simplicity's take a perfectly rigid tire.) If so, does this mean that--maximizing travel aside--a suspension optimized for jumps (landing at full droop) would have zero preload? I.e., adjust for desired ride height by experimenting with different spring rates while leaving preload set at zero. This way, very little force is transmitted directly to the chassis before the suspension begins to move. Normally, this kind of spring rate would be far too light to prevent bottoming out during landing but from what I've learned, hydro bumps and a good set of shocks can be adjusted to handle that. Of course, I could be completely wrong which is why I'm asking!

@@shootinbruin3614 good thoughts but you might have a misconception here. all forces on the coilover, preload and the load after, transmit into the chassis. because the top of the coilover bolts to the frame. So there is no fundamental difference in "where the force goes". The harshness with compressing through the pre-load comes from the "step change" in force before any motion takes place. You probably remember F=ma from middle school. But taking it one step further, the derivative of acceleration is called jerk. So a step change in force result in high jerk, which is hard for human to react. I think you are correct that if a theoretical vehicle with way more travel than any trophy trucks in real life and we have no space constraint at all, having no preload and soft spring can be helpful.

Forgive my lack of clarity, by "directly" what I was meaning to ask is if the jerk resulting from overcoming the preload when landing at full droop was responsible for the perceived harshness in ride. But now that I've worded the question this way it's becoming clearer to me that that was the point you were making in the video all along🤦‍♂ In regards to the second question, it's my perception that even with limited travel, it would still be better to go with minimal preload and let the shocks do the cushioning so you can avoid a large step change in force when the tire hits the ground. If I'm correct, this also mitigates issues with rebound. There's a great video on suspension ride quality by Filthy Motorsports that goes deep into this. I would link it here so you can take a look if you're interested but KZbin tends to delete comments with links. I have a 2021 Tacoma TRD ORDC 4x4 just like that red one with 1.5 inch lift in front and 1 inch lift in the rear fox by pass shocks on all 4 corners , it’s a automatic, I do have the RCI kickout rock sliders and TRD pro wheels wrapped with 32inch tall Toyo AT3’s and to be very honest it’s a BEAST off road I go on very tough , technical trails and it makes it look easy , I will never sell this Tacoma just absolutely LOVE it more today with 44k miles on it than I did day one when I drove it off the Lot with 3 miles on the ODO. My favorite truck I have owned in 27 years !

How much did the fox shocks run you and what lift did you use for the rear?

Gtarbmx, if I remember correctly my shocks were around $3,000 give or take a few bucks , I purchased them in 2021 so I don’t recall the exact number , but for the rear I used a 1 inch block and has worked flawlessly, my Tacoma practically lives in the desert 🌵 , I’ve put a good 15-20k miles of off roading on it so far , and I tow my car behind it every now and than on a flatbed trailer ..

@@peterhoma6385 definitely on the pricy side for me. On my 4runner I had 5100s all around and they worked great for almost 8 years. I wonder how they compare

I have a 2021 TRD Sport 4x4 and it's been amazing. I worry with all the issues some of the newer Toyotas are having such as the GR Yaris engines failing, that the 4th Gen Tacoma not even being offered with a V6 is not a way to inspire confidence. Toyota owners want reliability and ruggedness. I blame the EPA in all honesty, they need to back off.

Where can I get some details on this tacoma's setup? Looks like a great balance of flex and clearance. Very similar to what I had on my 4runner but trying to replicate it on my 3rd gen tacoma

It has Mainline Overland GTS 2.0 Suspension kit( a dobinson kit tuned by MLO), med leaf springs with heavy coils up front, and then JBA upper control arms.

I like gen 3 for the modern tech but I like the reliability of the 4.0 V6.

Agree. But the 3.5L is still very plenty reliable! Its does however lack the legendary low end torque that the 4.0L has. Wish Toyota put that engine in the 3rd gen instead.

Toyota has been doing turbos since the 90s and only stopped for a couple decades in north america, every where else in the world gets reliable turbocharged toyota engines

@@4WDisLife I think the powertrain should be fine, its more like the other tiny details that they can overlook like when the new Tundra came out. Will it go 1 million miles like the V8 on Tundra/LC? Probably not but if it does 500k, that would be considered a win. Turbo charged 4cycliners tend to have less issues than 6 and 8 cycliners too.

The wastegate is electronic and has already shown to be prone to failure. The turbo and wastegate come in a single non-serviceable unit and when the gate goes, the ENTIRE units needs to be replaced at a dealer cost of about $6K and customer cost anywhere between $9 to $11K. In love with Tacomas but will not be touching the new ones for 2-3 years at least.

I have technical contacts in two Toyota dealers and they all confirm that they are swapping turbo units on the new Tundras every couple of weeks. The wastegate is electronic and has already shown to be prone to failure. Based on your mods, i can tell why you wont buy a 4th gen. You spent way too much money 😂. Reasons why you buy a 4th gen and dump the 3rd gen. Torque. Technology. MPG. Comfort for the driver. It is better than the 3rd gen at everything.

You are contradicting yourself here, I agree with the reason people would buy the 4th gen over the 3rd gen you listed as torque tech and mpg, but reliability and cost of owner ship is the other two things people tend to choose Toyota for, and a 3rd gen would be a better choice for those two reasons. Therefore, 4th gen isn’t better in everything.

@@4WDisLife 3rd gen isnt bulletproof. They still have quality and drivetrain issues till this day. The 4th gen will suffer from first year model issues like any toyota. In time they will be just as reliable. That is the toyota way

i guarantee at the price they are going to ask for the 2024 and dealerships jacking up the addon costs, you can just get 3rd gen, one of the supercharger kits, keep the v6 and add power like we want. the only thing i like from the new gen 4 so far is those seats. otherwise. no one buys a Tacoma to expect v8 power. we like that they are somewhat still affordable because they are simple. start adding more interior/exterior electronics with these new features, etc. everything gets expensive quick including maintenance. i just wish they kept the v6 and just did similar to Ford with the 3.5l ecoboost.
