The Tundra's optional hybrid system is suspiciously similar in design to Ford's F-150 Powerboost system... But without the on-board generator function that has made the F-150 hybrid such a big seller in the USA. Which is right for you?

Nick, Let's face it, for a humongous, 3 ton pickup with a tiny bed, the rear seat space 7:50 is PATHETIC! Just because Toyota's 5'5" Chairman fits, does not mean it is good enough for the rest of us. 🤨

It’s a more limited market, not worth the investment for the limited sales return. If the Tundra had an equal market share to the big three, then it starts to make more sense. Nissan attempted the HD market, and had a great truck, but still crashed and burned because they didn’t have enough market share to sell enough to turn a profit on them.

Compared to my Ram 1500 Rebel this truck takes a massive nose dive in the storage department. No side pockets on either side of the center console which every other large pick up has . I’m all for the hybrid but come on Toyota . ?? No storage under the seats ? Are you kidding me ? The Ram has under seat storage and massive hidden compartments in the floor to put stuff away .Also Ram boxes to boot . Also the engine recall leaves a lot to be desired .

What is the point of this truck's hybrid system if it only gives you two more MPG in the city and one less on the highway compared to the non-hybrid version. All that additional money and weight and loss of under rear seat storage for hardly any additional fuel economy in the city and an actual deficit on the highway. Why would anybody get this truck with the hybrid system? Also, I hope you don't have to pay extra for that paint color, it looks like primer that got shot with a layer of clear coat.

The new generation looks too "edgy", like it was designed by a tennis shoe designer. Whatever happend to the idea that a truck is for "work"? My truck is a 2018 Tundra SR5 4x4 5.7 V8. Not fancy, and looks fine with dirt on it and I wash it a couple of times each year whether it needs it or not. The color is called "concrete". Love it, bought it new for $40K nicely equipped. Absolutely! Given the normal engine one is getting all the engines recalled and replaced! 120k engines swapped! Their won't be any of the non hybrid ones available for a while. Itried A tundra a few years ago when I bought a truck, it sucked compared to the F150 ecoboost. It was slow, torpid, and had a rough ride. Now it turns out they had bum engines too. Need a full size truck? Buy real american. Better yet, get an electric one! If you don't tow far often, the Lightning is better than the Tundra in all parameters.

Truck looks great, one problem tho, Ford makes a solid f150. If anybody did an in depth review on the engine, you'd see how thin the sidewalls are, and the main bearing caps are dinky. Sure the hybrids dont have issues now, but trust me, they will. Tundra deserves all the crap they eat. Half tons are heavy duty money, you're better off buying an hd. My 23 cummims limited gets the same milage and its a 6.7 😅

Great job Nick! The Tundra is not a consideration for me as its price is too breathtaking and the fuel economy needs to be twice as good as it is. I wish that vehicles nowadays would focus more on value and utility and less on power and bling --- do we need the massive acceleration and hill climbing ability for everyday use? Could we live without frills such as an electronic rear view mirror? Could cloth seats be as practical as ventilated and heated seats? Could manual roll up windows suffice? Could a simpler 4x4 system with old-fashioned locking hubs be substituted? Maybe I'm being hypercritical but growing up in the 1960s, many of the features found on the Tundra were either not available or were extra cost even for a Caddie, much less in a pick up.
