2024 Wired Freedom - Maximum Range Test

Hi Lee and community: Thanks for the videos, they helped me buying my 2024 Wired, I received it on January 20th, LOVE it, unfortunately due to weather, work and family issues I haven't ride much, hit 200 mile yesterday, I live in Loma Linda CA so I have several trails nearby, Hulda Crooks Park and South Hills Preserve (off road riding) as well as the Santa Ana River Trail that takes me all the way to Huntington Beach (63 miles). Yesterday I rode 53 miles, I am an old 250lb guy so 50% of the trip was on L2 pedal assist (returning home tired and uphill) I did some off-roading at Hidden Valley Wildlife Area using full Throttle, I made it back home with 0 bars and 52.8Volts, according to the 60V lithium battery chart 52.8V = 25% battery left, keep in mind 49.9V = 10% according to the cart and in your case your bike died. Looking forward to many more miles and to enjoy life, just noticed I got a flat so inner linings are coming up.😜

What an incredible effort and review! Especially around Sacramento after dark! This review is relevant to all bikes, not just Wired Freedom owners. If you think of your machine as a bicycle and not a motorcycle where you ride the throttle constantly, your range on most Ebikes will double with modest pedaling and a little less speed. Unless I have steep hills, pedal assist one feels good for most of my rides.

I've talked to him quite a few times and I said I have learned a lot how to fix the wired freedom bike. He told me to contact you and said for you to contact him and he will send you a pike. If he mention me the new bike. I can't figure out how to take the back tire off. It is different than the model you have. I said you would make a video on that if you got a bike. @@leetjohnson So are you getting the wire freedom or the cruiser? Like I said I have the cruiser. When do you think you'll be getting it? And could you show me on there how to get the back tire off? It looks like it's sitting in little round cylinders. The axle goes through and it just doesn't pull straight out.,, I am dealing with a very broken down body as I've just cracked my lower vertebrae a month ago which they call a broken back and out dealing with a lot of other issues. But that being said I can't Yank on that back tire too hard. Get it out. Could you let me on taking out the back tire to repair it for a flat, know when you get it and if you can do that favor for me? Who knows. Maybe he'll send you two lol wired, freedom and a cruiser. Regarding the Elaps Time meter. I just tested it in the garage and it looks like it only measures time-in-motion, i.e. when the rear wheel is in motion. To test it, I didn't ride it, I just noted that my bike had 3:55 on it from yesterday. I turned it on and left it for a couple of minutes and it still had 3:55. Then I raised the back wheel and hit the throttle for 5 seconds, then let it sit and it still had 3:55. Then I did it again and let it run with the rear wheel spinning. At this point, I noticed that the " : " was flashing when the rear wheel turned regardless of the throttle or PAS. Conversely, when the rear wheel is at rest, no flashing. So, time is accrued only when the rear wheel is turning forward and you know time is accruing by the flashing colon. (I did not test reverse, and "flashing colon??? That just sounds weird. I'd better not ride at night.)

Wow. I just got my black WF about 2 weeks ago and have put about 50 miles on it. (Lots of rain and chilly weather up here north of Seattle.) I had no idea so much range was even possible. I too like to pedal a lot but there are lots of hills around so staying on pedal assist 1 the entire time would be next to impossible for me. lol... But thanks 👍👍for your very thorough range test. I feel a lot better about taking my bike on longer rides. 🚴

Great video watched it all just to see your experience. I have ridden 40 miles a few times, but not on my WF. Still, its my favorite of my 6 ebikes. I have probably ridden most of the miles around 14-15 mph on other bikes, so know what you're feeling. Like you, i never seem to start early enough and end up in the dark before getting home. It's difficult to estimate the travel time at 15 mph. Keep ridding. 👍

I haven't done a max range test yet, but since I like to use throttle and pedal assist at leisure there's no point in that. I might invest in an extra battery at some point to extend my range.

Great video! Yes, I watched to the very end! I am new to the ebike world and am trying to understand what volt percentage means. My comfort zone is leaving it on battery percentage, but it sounds like it doesn't give accurate power availability. I am gleaning good info watching your videos. So thank you so much! Oh, the longest regular bike ride I have done is 68.9 miles. That was back in my good ole days.

@tbpc800 Thank you! All you need to know is thr voltage when your battery is fully charged and fully dead. Subtract those two values and you will have the total volts available. Then, take the voltage at rest (like when rolling downhill with no power being used or just stop for a second). I don't really use a percentage, but I know if I have say 14 volts to use (from full to dead) then if I'm showing (for example) 56volts and fully dead is 50v....I have about 6 volts left to use.

I've done several single-day rides of 100 miles or more, all on regular road bikes. My longest ride was 130 miles and my best performance was 100 miles in 5 hours(20 mph average). I can't remember my longest e-bike ride, but I think it was around 80 miles. I'd go longer if I could find an e-bike with a longer range.

Not that we would want to punish you more but what speed does P3 hit and what the guess on the max mileage at 3? I'm buying a '24 Freedom but my wife needs a smaller and slower bike. Trying to find us a nice balance when long cruising together while still letting me zoom on my own when I can :)

I got about 30 miles at pedal assist 5 and throttling (see my worst case scenario range test video), so I would assume pedal assist 3 would get around 40 to 50 miles at about 20 to 25 mph, depending on terrain and rider weight.

I have the 2024 WF, I have about 40+ miles on it at this point. I live on the east coast and it’s pretty cold here right now. Yesterday which was Saturday, it was supposed to be 60+ degrees and myself and a friend road the C&D Canal and I did about a total of 25 miles riding in pedal assist 3 at an constant speed between 17-23 mph with one battery bar left when I returned to our starting point. I am not quite sure if changing the P5 will help with the accuracy of voltage, not sure. Checking out your video, changing P5 to 8 and then CitizenCycle, changing P5 to 16. I then contacted wired and they say set P5 to 6, so of course it is confusing to know what is the best setting. I also have the AR Kepler which I have had for a couple years now and must say the Kepler is hard to beat at this point. Still forming my opinions. I appreciate your videos

Honestly, the battery bars aren't very accurate anyways. I would just monitor the voltage....67v full, and 50v completely dead. Much more accurate using the voltage meter.

C5 set to 3 theoretically cuts your power consumption in half. You might try it and see if the amount of assist-loss is acceptable to you. For me, when I want to make sure I can go as far as possible on a charge, I use this setting and ONLY use the throttle for short bursts or bum PAS up for a challenging upgrade, then bum it down as soon as I'm past it. I can routinely exceed 60 miles on one charge riding like this in mostly flat terrain. That said, I still very much enjoy using full power if I know I'm planning to travel less than 30 miles and/or ride hilly terrain. 🙂 Thanks for donating 5+ hours of your time to test the range in real life!

@insurancemann1 definitely not hard on the battery at all when at pedal assist 1 (250watts max). Pedal assist 5, maybe it is a little hard on it, but that's what I bought it for!

I will be using the 40Ah kit that i purchased from northeastbatterysystems Mounted on the back rack, along with the stock 20Ah battery to equal 60Ah total. Using a kit I purchased from @electromotivemods2293 electromotivemods This will eliminate my "range anxiety" and allow me to hammer on the throttle for longer with less voltage sag and more power and torque for more miles.

I have definitely considered it! I don't do a ton of night riding,so it isn't a big concern for me. Sometimes, it's nice not to have to worry about charging another battery to ride and just run off the bike battery. Also, I rarely use this much of my battery other than for testing. Thanks for the interesting ride, it really helps to know real world numbers. How would you rate the stock seat on a ten scale after that? Having right hand and left hand threads for the pedals makes me wonder why it's not that way on the crank. I'm guessing that's an industry standard and not peculiar to WF.

Honestly, the next day I wasn't really sore at all! Probably an 8 or 9 out of 10 for the seat.

Thanks for all your videos. I found a bike shop that ordered 10 freedoms, so I plan to take a test ride when they receive and assemble them. I was just waiting for this long range video to pull the trigger. My ass wears out around 40 miles on my current bike, so the range here is more than enough. I have a mid drive bike that light and fast (28 mph) so if I'm still able to peddle the much heavier freedom without working too hard or having to ghost peddle, it sounds like my next bike. Unrelated question. do you have a recommendation for a ramp style bike rack that can handle the freedom with another ebike. I need the ramp since I'm 75 and not as strong as I use to be. thanks again for your help

Not that you should redo your test, but maximum range would require you to set your p14 to 1 and then your PAS 1 would pull about 130 watts and you would have a 9 to 10 hour long ride and be close to 100 miles. The other advantage of changing your p14 to 1 is that that your bike feels a bit more natural on lower assist levels and you can pedal at slower speeds.

Yeah, I considered that and even mentioned that but edited it out of the video for time. The reason I decided against that was it may not have had enough power for the bigger hills, and I would have had to possibly use pedal assist 2 in those circumstances. At 72 miles, I was wiped, couldn't imagine another hour or two, and 20 more miles! Great point worth mentioning for those looking to get the absolute max distance or time out of the bike. And then there is also Pedal assist 0 too, but at that point, might as well just use a lightweight road bike and use zero battery and unlimited range?

@@robb36kcp14 or maybe it’s c14 adjusts the power of the pedal assist. At the lowest level, PAS 1 is about 130 watts. You can set this to 1,2 or 3 and the default is 2. Many people will find PAS1 too much at 2 or 3. I normally ride in PAS 2 which pulls about 330 watts at the low power setting, this gives you a speed of 18-24 mph depending on how hard you pedal and I get about 60 miles of range.

So I’ve had my new wired freedom for just 2 days now and the motor cuts out randomly . Called and spoke to wired couple times they so far told me to do system reset, which works for awhile but then it will do it again. I found online how to do total system reset which also incorporates removing battery for several minutes. That works for longer but eventually motor will start cutting out increasingly often after long rides. I’m going to have to call them back again.

That's so weird....I wonder what it could be? Maybe the brake motor cutoff sensor is pinched or making it cut out? Do you see the brake icon on your display when you brake? Maybe see if that flashes when it cuts out?

@@leetjohnson I see the motor emblem on screen when I apply the brakes and it goes away when I let go. I will try to remember to look at screen when motor cuts out to see if it’s the brakes. But if it was pinching wouldn’t a system reset not do anything? Because the reset seems to work but only for awhile then it will cut out. If I remove battery and drain system of all power, wait few min then put battery back and do software reset it will go an entire ride without cutting out. But then next trip will do it once or twice. Then trip after that it will do it more

Thanks for this video! I took my 2024 Wired Freedom on a longer ride than I normally do. Near the end of a 35 mile ride, I was down to one bar on the battery level indicator and when the ride was done, the display showed 55V. (I was mostly using PAS 2 and 3 with an occasional level 4 for a few really steep hills). I started to worry around the last 4 or 5 miles of the ride but seeing this video, it appears I was not in as much trouble as I thought. I did subsequently read in the manual which stated when the last bar goes out, you are down to 15%. It looks like you can get down to around 50V before the battery conks out. Do you know how to correlate the % battery life with the reported battery voltage value on the screen? I love this bike but it would sure be nice if % battery life were given.

I'm glad you enjoyed it! Unfortunately, the battery voltage will be the most accurate way to determine how much you have left. The bars are good for a quick glance, but the voltage is the closest to a percentage you can get. It also depends how you are using the battery....at pas 1....it will go down slowly, all the way to 50v. If at pas 5, you may go from 54, to 52 volts and then it may stop, due to the higher drain, if that makes sense. Basically, the lower the wattage use as you get to the end of the battery, the further you can push it. As a rule of thumb....if I don't think I will make it home, I go to pas1 or 2 and don't use any throttle, lowering it to pas1 on the flat, pas0 on the downhill and pas 2 for hills....that should get you back home in most cases.

I have a question, (concerning the wired freedom) . On the left side of the handle bars there are the three buttons where the middle button turns the bike on. Well the bottom of the three buttons , if you press that for around 4 to 5 seconds the bike takes off. This could either be an anomay for my bike alone or this could be some built in function that I'm not aware of. Question? Could you tell me if your wired freedom has this identical functionally. If your bike does the same thing then I wonder what is the purpose of this feature? Dave.

Yes! That is the walk feature!! It is probably set high, due to the settings. It's used to help you walk the bike, for example up a steep hill.

Do you buy into the 80%-20% theory for battery life? If so, do you have a charger that will cut off at 80%? And, what is the 20% voltage equivalent?

I do think that it will definitely make the battery last longer over time. I try not to go into the 1 bar (aside from this test), and unless I need the range, I try not to charge above 3 bars. Keep in mind that the higher the voltage (charge level), the faster the bike will be (for top speed). Also, it's not just how high or low you go with the charge but also how long it stays at that voltage. For a general rule of thumb, I try to always charge my battery up if it is at 1 bar up to 2 bars for storage, immediately after riding. Conversely, if you charge up to 3 or 4 bars to ride, try to do so as close to ride time as possible (avoid leaving the battery fully charged or discharged for long periods of time). 24 hours isn't a big deal, but I always try to leave my battery at 2 bars for storage or when not in use, to keep the battery happy, at a comfortable mid range nominal voltage. I'm told my 2024 wired freedom delivery date isn't until mid-April, but I am getting all my ducks in a row, and your channel is info-gold! So regarding the 80% cutoff, does the wired charger cut off at 80%? Or, does it just go all the way to 100, and if you want to stop it at 80, you'd have to just keep an eye on it? If that's the case, what are you looking for? I'm an older/handicapped rider with half a kneecap on my left knee, and am not that interested in top speed, but I want it if I need it. I feel like a kid again on Christmas eve waiting for bike to arrive, this ebike boom is the greatest thing since sliced bread for those of us in the handicapped community, who want to enjoy the ride like we used to! To be honest, I would just get the newer version (2024). They made a major change to the suspension due to rubbing against the speed controller housing. If you look at some of the older videos of this bike and compare it to the newer one, it is completely redesigned and no longer has the clearance issue. Also, new comes with a warranty, whereas used it won't. Maybe if you could get it for under $1,500....but even then, for that much, I'd rather have the newer version.

Make sure your P5 setting is set to 6. Also, I have noticed that it takes a few pedals on the crank to get the batteryeter on the display to update the new voltage/bars showing. Let me know if this helps!

I haven't ridden an ebike before but am super interested in the Freedom. The range in PAS 1 is REALLY impressive, but does PAS 1 actually feel like it's doing any of the work? Like, considering how much more a bike like this weighs than a regular bike, does it feel like it's actually propelling you forward more than if you were putting this same amount of effort into pedaling a regular bike? I guess my problem is I have no idea what an ebike's "propulsion" even feels like, or else I wouldn't sound so ignorant in this comment.

No worries, it's a fair question! I'd say that at pas 1 it basically offsets the weight of the battery motor and controller to make it similar to riding a regular pedal bike, except that uphill it will help a little bit more than without any power. Pas 2 and 3 are considerably more powerful and will get you going easily with very little pedal input needed unless a steep hill, then just some help from the pedals will keep you going fairly quickly. At pedal assist 4 and 5, it almost feels like a moped/motorcycle with how much power it puts out, no pedaling needed...even up decent sized hills. Obviously, you won't be going motorcycle speeds, but the instant torque is really nice.
