I love that Yamaha has finally fitted nice brakes to it. My old R1M certainly didn't come with Brembo. I know looks are subjective but if it's a great bike you'd be silly to ignore it simply on looks.
@TheMissendenFlyer5 ай бұрын
I do agree, but a large part of Bike ownership is around enjoying the looks, at least it is for me, and although the Bike is not a stunner I could now at least live with the looks of it. But of course a totally subjective point.
@hellothere43425 ай бұрын
@TheMissendenFlyer I tend to agree, I ride a Superduke and that thing is ugly but everytime I'm on it. I get the biggest giggles. After 3 SDR I still think it's ugly and I'm about to buy my forth. It certainly looks better than before and I get a feeling that their XSR version will look great.

But although it has stylemas it still doesn’t feel like the street triple or 890r brakes.Those have bigger discs and steel brake lines. Would have expected them to use steel brake lines on an sp model. But… it is a super nice bike to ride, the engine is lovely, I do like the punch of the Duke 890r but the CP3 comes really close and is a lot smoother at lower rpm’s. In means of looks, would have liked other color schemes, more a fan of the black normal mt09. But it looks a lot better in real life than on pictures or videos. I ride a street triple rs at the moment, it sure looks better imho, but still switching to an mt09 next year. Love the riding position, more plush suspension and the torque. KTM is my favorite but not happy with the reliability of the 790/890 platform, not sure if that’s fixed on the 990 dukes, and there’s no R version at the moment.
@hellothere43423 ай бұрын
@@wernerxldata i thought that was a little weird too. I've also got a CF Moto 700CLX Sports. It also has Stylema,Brembo Radial MC and braided steel lines. Pretty much same as my Aprilia Tuono and KTM SDR. Overall bike I still think the RS especially in that yellow is still benchmark middle weight naked.
@wernerxldata3 ай бұрын
@@hellothere4342 Yeah the RS is really nice, but the seating position is a bit more sporty, as I'm also doing longer trips now I prefer the MT09 SP, and it's easier to mount some luggage. But you can't go wrong with most of these bikes. Love the CF Moto's as well, insane what you get for the price.

@@TheMissendenFlyer Thanks Andy. As a 50 year old who began riding motorbikes at 6, then raced dirt bikes as a teenager who then progressed to road racing starting out in the Australian 250 cc production series all the way up to our Superbike series inclusive of WSB at my home track being Phillip Island in both 95 and 96 I actually find the position of the GP to actually be relaxed and the MT-09 still a little bit too upright for my liking. Especially as I’m above average in height at 6’2. I’ve heard several riders that are somewhat vertically challenged still find the GP a bit extreme however it all really comes down to what you’ve been conditioned to ride and muscle memory as I like to know what the front wheel is doing to provide a better level of confidence. Sitting upright simply doesn’t provide this on any bike to the same degree regardless of brand. I do also own an Africa Twin for any extended riding plans. Along with a track only GSXR-1000 just to keep as sharp as possible. It all comes down to personal preferences. The MT-09 SP is a great bike hence why I did a back to back comparison.

@@marcusgeorge1825 Agreed. I have a std 2023 XSR900 and I've lowered the bar and raised the seat to try and reduce the windsock effect, and it's much better now. GP is even more engaging.

@@HaggisPower I’m 6’3” and found the reach to the bars as perfectly placed and not upright like the MT-09. After 40 something years of riding with a Sportbike background it also has less weight on your hands and with the screen it still enables clean air to hit you from chest up which reduces the weight on the clip ons with cruise control activated. Yet still offers much more front end confidence and feedback than the riding position of the MT-09. For giggles I also tested the Tracer 9 GT. That screen is the worst I’ve experienced and it’s just too upright for my riding style.

I've had 4 MT-09s (2 Standard, 2 SP) and think they're fantastic bikes. I've not ridden the 2024 version in either form but previous versions of the SP had firmer suspension than the Standard and would be my preference only if I went on Track days. If you don't do those, like me, the Standard is fine but the spanner in the works now is the Brembo brakes which I'm sure are fantastic and could be worth the extra alone.

If I was interested in getting into the mt-0x gang, I'd have the better-brakes one. The suspension I'm not good enough to notice, but the brakes? I've ridden both the 2024 Street Triple RS and the 2023 version of the MT-09, and the MT-09 has noticeably more get-up-and-go. This is likely because of the sizable torque difference. It's possible that the Street would out perform it a little bit better at the upper end of the rev range but in any case, almost all riding includes low, mid, and upper mid range rpms. Therefore, in most situations, the MT-09 would be quicker and faster and would definitely be faster with a passenger or loaded up with more weight, like gear and tank and saddle bags.

So the closest competitor to the targeted performance envelope of the MT09 SP is Triumph’s 765RS, the knock on the Triumph units are the gear ratios are too low overall and more problematic the ratios are very close, and is more an optimization typically chosen to give a power delivery suitable for track use applications rather than what is ideal for use in conventional street riding temperament. Is Yamaha’s gearing choice as “busy” as that of the Triumph 765 machines?

Interesting. I am really struggling with the looks of the SP. I went back to the standard MT-09 review and I found the looks of that bike acceptable. But for some reason this color scheme accentuates the notchy parts of the bike and I really dont like it. I thought maybe there were some differences in the cowl pieces, but in looking back at the standard, the pieces all look to be similar or the same. Funny how much difference a paint job can make.

The only bike I would rate higher is the XSR900GP but it is the same engine! 😁

Hi Andy, if you had to choose between this or your z900rs which would you choose? . Only comment on the new camera was the angle showed a lot of views your posterior so would prefer if it was in a different position 😂

Fair point on the bum shots - will limit those in future. And I've grown to love my Z900RS since I put the new headers on it - I'd still take the RS over the SP......(also I LOVE the looks of the big Kwak, where as the MT09 is just OK).....

This is probably a better road bike than the street triple RS but it doesn't look as good sadly. It looks better than it did though. One thing i noticed on this and other reviews is the dash looks a lot like the STRS dash that no one likes with the weird rev counter. Can this be changed as its not like this on the none SP version?

Yes I believe it can.....but don't bet the farm on it as I'm not 100% sure

Two things that I've noticed straightaway horrible triumph style Speedo and the seat is creased quite badly on a new bike

Yes not sure what was going onb with that seat....

Why doesn't Yamaha take a look at BMW to see how they really build displays?
@wernerxldata3 ай бұрын
@@Pseudo_Placebo You’re right but it isn’t terrible. My street triples dash is worse, however I don’t pay a lot of attention to it. The rpm view is horrible but it’s easy to focus more on just the sound.

Nice bike, not for me at my age and I'm also in the more is less camp. I know your Kawasaki is more expensive but to me worth that little bit extra and it's got the looks to die for.

Give me the MT09 motor any day. I always find inline fours bland.

SP usually stands for “Sports Production”. Close enough.

If you look around you can find a 2023 new SP for £10K now. Any thoughts from your own experience on this years changes - I believe the ergonomics are a bit different - a bit less sit up and beg, more tucked this year.

Andy, can you use the quick-shifter at low speeds around town, what gears and what speed? I want to change my bike next year, and I've always wanted an Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 Factory, but there are a lot of downsides to owning that bike. It's a beautiful bike, but the quick-shifter doesn't work below about 4500rpm, fuel economy is very bad, insurance and servicing are high, etc... But, then, Yamaha go and bring this bike out, and I just can't ignore it, and, let's face it, it does make a lot more sense for the road. 😁

Yes you can….

@@TheMissendenFlyer Cheers Andy, it's just a pity you couldn't spend more time with the bike. It's fantastic that you can actually use the quickshifter in second gear around town, unlike Yamaha's previous models. I also like the fact that the bars and pegs are both two-position adjustable, so great for taller riders. It's definitely looking favourite to be my next motorcycle. There's always a distinct lack of information on quickshifters and cruise controls. It would be great to know what speeds they work at, and are there any downsides, such as, is the quickshifter clunky, or can you use the cruise control in a 20mph zone, for instance. Another one is the bike's MCIA secured rating, for insurance purposes. It looks like Yamaha have finally ironed out the problems with the MT-09, plus it's a decent price for all that kit, overall, what a great bike. 👍
