r1 owner here-- the thing I would have added re: urban use, beyond just the coolant temp - the bike in general **GETS** **HOT** hot hot hot hot HOT. If you're not going 70+ it just doesn't have the airflow to keep itself appropriately cool for urban riding. This means the aux fans kick in early / often / (always). You will abhor every stop sign/red light on the planet, as motion is your only savior from drowning in the lava-cycle's fiery wrath. The "fire logo" you put on this thing is 100% appropriate. If you live in phoenix like me, the dead of summer actually becomes an off-season. Good thing all winter is fair game! That said, not in a million years would I trade it for a cbr/gsxr/aprillia/bmw. Mayyyyyybe a duc. Maybe- but that would be a 35-40k bike, and this is ~19k.

Yeah, the daily rider aspect is kinda goofy for me. First of all, you will want two bikes. If I'm considering an R1 and I commute every day, I would just get an R7 and a decent used commuter bike. Or a slightly used R1 and a cheap commuter. If you want an R1 and you get something else, you will still always want that R1. Okay, maybe an MT10 could scratch that crossplane itch and still be a comfy commuter, but it's still not an R1.

I own this exact bike and frankly couldn't agree more with the entire review. It's a bad (perhaps laughably so) streetbike and a great trackbike, with a unique character that somehow manages to feel pretty intoxicating in both settings. Truly more of a lust object than a rational choice. Totally fair criticisms about the small display, humdrum suspension, and so-so brakes aside... I have to point out that you do get a peppering of exotica compared to much of its similarly-priced superbike competition: cast magnesium wheels and subframe, titanium exhaust headers (and much of the muffler, if I'm not mistaken), titanium intake valves and titanium connecting rods.

If I understand correctly, the R1 engine is so smooth because they can't remove the balancer, unlike all the other regular inline-4s that have deleted the balancer because they have end-to-end balance naturally to chase peak whp (but not totally balanced, so they still vibe without a balancer).
@Josh-cw8by3 ай бұрын
It feels smooth because at least one piston is always in motion. This translates into a smoother running engine and torque application. In a flatplane i4 there are points in the cycle where all pistons stop moving. You can put together the rest. Balancing shafts help as well.

This is a balanced and true review. I spent time with a 2020. The only thing it excels in is the sound and engine attitude. It tortures and fatigues the rider like old Ducati's used to. It's too focussed when it doesn't really need to be. It's not the best on the road, not the best on track. The focus doesn't make it greater than the competition. Too compromised everywhere, not great anywhere. Current gen GSXR-1000R and ZX-10R (I own both), not to mention the Euro options are far better bikes, IMHO.

Hi. I'm new here. Can someone explain to me how a 1200cc bike(not all, but i know of at least one) has 90hp, while this 1000cc makes 200hp? Like i'm five, please.

The gist is that compression ratio is lower and the engines are not designed for high horsepower, because it's not needed for those particular motorcycles. They are less stressed, since they have high capacity but not high output. They are cheaper to manufacture, since they don't use exotic materials and designs like racing engines. It's why a 600cc supersport engine can makes more power than some 1200cc engines. EDIT: Imagine an adult punching a child softly and that child punching the adult hard. The child's punch will hurt, but not the adult's. Same principle.

It comes back to same saying...it's more fun to drive a slow thing fast then a fast thing slow.

Zach; you probably know this, but I thought I'd point it out anyway; @1:48 when you were using your fingers to demonstrate piston movement in a typical inline 4, you had pistons 2 & 4 rising and falling together (which would lead to a rocking couple - similar to a 180 degree parallel twin)... in fact pistons 1 & 4 rise and fall together (thus cancelling the rocking couple, leaving only secondary imbalance induced by rod swing).

What about the R7 vs R1? I know smaller engine but still crossplane engine. I for one love the sound of both. But I want a flickable bike that’s fun in twistys. My commute is twisty rds. Money not a problem. What’s ur recommendation?

The 2014 was lumpy and not smooth low down, is the 2015 + smoother down low? Or same

I am considering on a 2015 used R1M with 40,000 miles. Just wondering if its a good idea... or if i should just get later models instead?

love the honesty. Yes it's cool. No, it's not good for the road or commuting.

Besides the obvious Goldwing or big cruiser, what bike has the best passenger accommodations? What supersport, sport, or naked bike actually seems to care about the passenger?
