Thanks again for all the work you do John I know what it’s like to be in constant of your pain and it doesn’t make doing the job any easier. I’m looking forward to your first review of the year and then following you for another year. I glean more broadhead information from you and your tests than anywhere else as a matter of fact in 24 I don’t think I even watched anybody else’s testing. Some of my hunting Broadheads her brands that I had never even heard of until I saw you test them and that includes Terra Firma Gladius. I think the first unfamiliar company that I was exposed to by you was Alien Archery. And that led to my pre-ordering the SBT 150 heads. Both phenomenal heads that I would not have known about without you, but for some reason, I seem to pick the heads that are hardest to sharpen lol You’re in my prayers. Let’s have a great year!!

Love this channel been watching a long time and purchased the DEEPOWER broadheads specifically because of you! My comment is about the flight test. I know that in my own experience I shoot heavy arrows and I was able to basically eliminate poor broadhead flight with fixed blades specifically by just adding weight to the front. Have you tested flight with lighter bolts to determine if the broadheads steer at lighter weights? Also prayers for you quick healing. We like you on youtube, but we need you in the woods!
@williamparis388011 күн бұрын
Love the channel and wishing you a speedy recovery! I wonder if there's an opportunity to revisit some broadheads that were tested prior your upgrading the testing method?? The one that comes to mind is the Cutthroat 125gr. SB...
@LuskArcheryAdventures11 күн бұрын
I do that periodically. Especially if I can get my hands on more, or if I have extras from the original testing. I had to pay full price for those cut throats a while back. I don’t know why they’re not willing to donate them to me. But they’re not cheap, so a retest where I’m paying a lot of money is not usually at the top of my priority list :)

I'd really like to see a disclaimer on each test for any broadheads that were given to you by the manufacturer vs buying off the shelf. There have been a few broadheads over the past few years that seemed to score much higher on sharpness than what most consumers seem to be receiving.
@LuskArcheryAdventures11 күн бұрын
I usually ask manufacturers just to give me a random sample of the heads. But that’s a good suggestion to note which ones have been supplied by the manufacturers.
@mjnolan212 күн бұрын
John, with respect to the gel test… the density, and consistency, and coefficient-of-friction of the gel affects the penetration with delta (distance) from the bottom. Have you thought of a way to integrate this variation into your data?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I really don’t want to add in my personal efforts in sharpening as I think it would jade the testing. Most people do not sharpen their broad heads anyway. But I do appreciate the suggestion.

I think you should perform a deflection test through rib bone or replicate rib bones with two inches of foam in front and behind the ribs, the ballistic gel should be positioned about 12-20 inches behind to show how much deflection is caused by different shapes of broadheads. Two bladed heads are the worst offenders due to no 90 degree opposing blade equal in size. People get so focused on other factors and overlook some very important ones. I still think your flight test is too fast the more reasonable or common speed would be around 275-285 air speed changes due to the shape of different heads and blades, there is a reason why broadhead companies will specify if the head is cross bow rated not just the size of the ferrule. Great videos! And I appreciate your work!
@LuskArcheryAdventures11 күн бұрын
Thank you for the comment and the suggestion. I did deflection testing for a couple years. But I stopped doing it because of its lack of consistency. Whether the blades of a broadhead hit perpendicularly to the medium, or are rotated vertically upon impact, makes quite a difference in whether there is deflection or not. I could use the same broadhead and get very different results based on the rotation and exact position of those blades upon impact. So I stopped doing a specific test for it for that reason. I explained that in the first video of 2024, when I outlined my testing regimen. However, that being said, when I see a broadhead, and I’m concerned about the potential for deflection, I will sometimes deduct a small amount from the score for that reason.
@MrHunter278411 күн бұрын
@ Thanks for taking the time to reply and I hope you get feeling better so you can get out and do what you enjoy doing. I agree, deflection testing is hard to control maybe removing the fletchings would help control rotation. I watched a tac vane video testing there vanes and there LRP insert/swhacker broadheads and the amount of deflection caused by head’s being transferred into the arrow shaft was astonishing, you should watch it if you haven’t seen it already. Thanks again for your work
@KTMsoldier198812 күн бұрын
1 critique i kinda have is paper tune the crossbow bolt you use. Maybe you have done this. Believe it or not rotating the nock to a different vein can change the tear. Find the best tear for the 3 veins. Same process as finding the weak spot in your arrow spine.
@LuskArcheryAdventures12 күн бұрын
Yeah. I do that. I use one bolt for all of my accuracy testing, just for that reason.

Good luck with your medical journey. I'm battling a double tear in my shoulder so the bow was retired and I tried a crossbow for the first time. While extremely accurate, I found the 11+ pound weight annoying and kept making excuses to go bird hunting with my dog instead of sitting in a tree stand. I'm trying to figure out now whether to go with a light draw weight bow and a fixed blade broadhead or dish out $$$ for a 6-7 pound crossbow. Any recommendations?
@LuskArcheryAdventures11 күн бұрын
I like using a lighter weight crossbow. Killer Instinct has a whole new lineup coming out now, and they’re priced well also.
@eriklarson8412 күн бұрын
John, first off - hope you heal up quickly! And thank you for all you do. Question on the crossbow testing: I love the idea! Is the crossbow tuned? As in bareshaft and fletched touching at 30? Or do you tune with a broadhead? Thanks!
@LuskArcheryAdventures11 күн бұрын
Thank you. It’s tuned as well as I know how to- as you know, there are not as many ways to tune crossbow as there is a vertical bow. I do use the same exact bolt for both the field point and every broadhead I test, to keep it very consistent.
@harveyfamily128112 күн бұрын
John, may I ask how do you get your crossbow arrow weight up so high 700gr? Been using BE Zombies with 110 brass insert and 2x50gr weight collars screwed in to make a 500gr arrow including 100gr broadhead. I need a 250gr head just to get to the magic 650gr total arrow weight.Thanks!!
@LuskArcheryAdventures11 күн бұрын
It’s from the Bishop Archery bolts I use. They are extremely heavy-and extremely expensive. But more heavy bolts are coming out. People are realizing the benefit of extreme momentum that’s generated from a very heavy bolt, especially when it can still be fired from a crossbow at around 300 ft./s. I love that combination when I hunt with it.

Dang, sorry to hear about your medical issues. I just discovered I have arthritis in my spine. Pain goes from mid back all the way to hip. A steroid shot helped a lot, but only got me to 70% or so of normal. Unfortunately, one of the the worst things you can do for it is sit still in a tree stand for hours in cold weather. Hoping my stretching and workouts will get me over the hump for next fall. I bought a crossbow last year to start experimenting a little. So far, I have found different broadheads will have a different a point of impact than my field points. This is not what I experience with my vertical bow as it is tuned so my broadheads hit the same spot as my field points. I guess the speed of a crossbow adds more complexity to getting them to fly correctly. I am thinking it is because the spine of the bolts are not stiff enough, but I am not completely sure. There seem to be a lot of claims out there on spine stiffness for bolts, but nothing that can be quantified as far as I can tell. It's easy to order arrows with a specific spine -- not so with crossbow bolts. I'm thinking of sticking with SEVR as they seem to fly the most true, but I would still like to get Iron Wills to impact the same spot as my field points but have been unable to do so. What brand bolt are you shooting?
@LuskArcheryAdventures11 күн бұрын
I mainly shoot Bishop Archery bolts, due to their super heavy weight. Sevrs are amongst the very best for flight.
