This product appears to waste a lot of electricity. The car's charging screen shows your car is using 4 kW even before you plugged anything into the device. I assume this happens because the car thinks it's doing Supercharging and consuming 4 kW to needlessly heat the battery. Try going into the Tesla service mode screen and disabling battery heating to see if it helps improve the efficiency. Right now the efficiency is terrible - 4000 Watts to charge a phone at 30 Watts.

@WaterBarleyHopsYeast21 күн бұрын
This looks to be an 1800 watt inverter with battery which is very similar to a solar generator. The only difference is that you can pull power from your Tesla battery pack. The main issue I see with this is the power inefficiency due to the fact that the Tesla will be temperature modulating the battery pack the whole time you are using this device. As soon as you plug in the car will run the heat pump, coolant pump, and even stall the motors to generate heat when the outside temps are below 65F. This alone will consume around 1-2kWh in addition to whatever load is being used by the discharger. This means that it’s not really feasible to use this as a backup during a power outage or for camping purposes. If you just want to use it for an hour or less for tailgating or whatever then yeah it kinda makes sense but for that kind of money you can buy a 2kWh solar generator that can do the same and you can plug the solar generator into your Tesla’s 16v DC outlet to recharge the solar generator at 240Wh. It’s a cool workaround but just doesn’t seem practical until Tesla enables this V2L functionality to prevent the battery conditioning from happening.

$1500, thats a joke right? I would love this feature but for a whopping $1500 NO WAY! For that price I would want something that can power my house, not just a phone charger or an air fryer. If the car thinks it's DC charging does that mean it preconditions the battery? My concern with buying one of these would be that Tesla could easily release a software update which blocks it from working. @@dadstoyscars What he meant was that Tesla can easily update the BMS software to monitor reverse charge current, and simply open the HV connector if negative current is registered through the charge port, which is 100% in Teslas control regardless what updates this device receives. Tesla have simply not had any focus on this, as this have never been an issue (before now), but if more and more people start using this type of V2L and it causes excessive battery wear (which it will, as high battery temp is only intended for a very short period for fast charging, and will degrade the battery significantly faster if used for a prolonged time), they most likely will. Tesla already shut down 12V sockets while in stand by with sentry mode on due to excessive battery drain by some people (some people found out they could connect directly to the 12V DC supply to power high power inverters for V2L by the cars 400V->12V system). Regardless if they block this function by SW update or not, Tesla can still easily discover this later as charge sessions are logged, and it's very easy to spot that "something's off" with a 5-10 hour charge session at a "supercharger" that charged up -40%. Now, the battery might be perfectly fine with this, but if you do use it, expect any battery warranty to be voided (this is already stated in the manual if i remember good), and do get the S3XY commander that should be able to disable the battery pre-heater (although, i'm not sure how this works while the car think it's supercharging). Other then that, i must say, it's a very interesting product, and i wish Tesla would offer a similar solution that wouldn't void warranty, and maintain a high efficiency by knowing it's not actually charging.

what would be ideal is to have a device that could connect directly to the Tesla level2 wallcharger since these should be connected to a 60 amp circuit that coud provide up to 48 volts from the Tesla model Y. If this was possible, then homeowners could install a manual or automatic switch to disconnect/turn off power at the mains. You cannot just inject electricity into house/grid from an arbitrary socket where the wallbox is connected. It has to be properly installed, marked (so that everybody is aware there can be electricity even with main switch turned off) and have correctly installed break-before-make switch towards the grid. There probably are some dual-purpose wallboxes, but their installation is similar to install of hybrid solar.
@mickyd321 күн бұрын
@@Marki555 This is NOT an arbitrary socket, Tesla Wall chargers (not the portable unit) connect to a dedicated circuit. This is no different from my portable generator that I had installed. The Tesla wall charger is hardwired to a dedicated 60 amp circuit. You could do the same with the portable Tesla charger using a 50 amp circuit but that is not what I am speaking to here. The only thing I would have to move my 60 amp circuit breaker to the top of the panel, and as I mentioned in my comments, you will and insert a manual shut off switch or automatic switch. In , case, for me, this is already there. I would just need to move my circuit breaker into this position. The install is no different from a house generator. Yes, the solar boxes do that automatic switch as well, but is not a requirement. Any electrician can install a manual switch or automatic switch for the Mains to make this work.

Yes, it's 120 volts, but is it a pure sinewave? If it needs roaring cooling fan, that means it is throwing off a lot of heat? Does it screw up the Tesla computer's HV battery SOC calculations? So I was wondering what this device is actually doing to trick Tesla into V2L? Does it have an effect on warranty? What is the efficiency / loss of this device?
@Marki55521 күн бұрын
It's emulating a DC charger. DC charger is directly connected to the battery and the charger generates voltage little higher than the current battery voltage, so it gets charged. This device generates little lower voltage, so the electricity flows from the battery to the device. Tesla can measure charger voltage (and shows it in the service menu), so with future update it can disconnect the "charger" when it sees voltage lower than the battery voltage. Another unknown is why the car thinks the charger is outputing 4 kW (but with zero miles/hour) with just connected without any load. And what does the car display with load connected. Regarding warranty - the manual says you are not allowed to try to take power from the LV or HV system (except the 12v sockets).

$20,000 is very expensive just to get power from your car to run electric an Appliance. The moment you connect that device to your car and the power start flowing from the high voltage battery to outside of the car, The car will send the signal to Tesla letting Tesla know that the high voltage battery is being used for external purposes. Tesla then immediately voids your 8 years or 120,000 miles High voltage battery warranty. Those lithium-ion battery were tested with Tesla car and the warranty was specific to those testing conditions. Since now the battery is cycling (1500 max) outside of normal Tesla vehicle usage the warranty will no longer be valid. This means let's just say within a year your battery starts to give problems and not hold charge as well anymore. When you go to Tesla, they will say that you don't have warranty and that a new pack of batteries gonna cost you $15,000 minimum plus labour and tax. It's gonna round up to be $20,000 Hope you enjoyed your little cup of coffee.

It's a slick device, and a easy way to add 120v outlet. What is the efficiency? If it triggers battery heating, in addition to the device having to be heated, it may waste lots of energy just to, say, boil the water. It's going to have the same issue with the Tesla warranty as inverter. I'd just add an inverter if i need 120v. That would be way cheaper and more energy efficient. I have 2kw inverter installed in my frunk and it's been working great.

There's also a 220V version available. As @pharmajoe5468 has mentionned, the nominal voltage in Europe is 230V now, but 220V will work as well. I still have some doubts concerning security. For instance, is the current cut off in case of a failure sufficiently fast and in a failsafe fashion ? You don't want to see >200kW entering the device in case of a short circuit and don't want to explain this to your insurrance company. I still think it is a good idea, but it needs to be tested and developped further.
@adolfodef22 күн бұрын
Since it has (×2) Split Phase 120 V Power Outputs; in theory you can combine both to get 240v (still @60 hz) & then a transformer to get the 3_phase alternate current at 240v @50 Hz. -> The European version that uses CCS (rather than NACS) likely does this natively.

In the video he shows also CCS european version of the device. But all the questions still remain.

As usual, wait and see.

DC charging works by connecting the charger directly to the battery (there is a very thick cable from charger port to the battery) by closing contactors (can be seen in service menu and heard as loud noise when starting/stopping DC charge). DC charging then works by charger generating DC voltage with is little higher than the battery voltage (same as charging NiMH AA batteries at home). There is no electronics in the car involved in the current path from DC charger to the battery - just monitoring circuits which ensure the voltage as everything is correct (and would open the contactors in case it detects something odd). But yes, it does smell like a scam :) But if Tesla doesn't care that charger voltage is lower than battery voltage (in this case the electricity would flow from car to the device), then it works (until Tesla starts to care and firmware update disables it).
