Why not When they compete in the same market and cost roughly the same.

​@pillred5974 cost is I believe around 4-5 thousand difference. Mazda3 cheaper trims trim about 25-26k civic hybrid about 29-30k minimum.

Having owned both back to back the Mazda3 is a nice car but as an all-rounder, the Honda is just that bit better.
