Ibis has the Exie for the short travel XC riders. I think it makes sense that the Ripley now becomes the quintessential 'short travel' trail bike. Exie for XC, Ripley for Trail, Ripmo for All mountain and HD6 for Enduro.

Nope, if I wanted a bike that could hang with the Ripmo, I’d get a Ripmo. The v4 had that special sauce that made it loved by all who owned one. This is like a Ripmo-lite. Not what I’m personally looking for but I’m sure it works for others.

I own a V4 Ripley (mostly because the DW Link provides the best platform for the climbing efficiency that I need here in Boise and because of Jason's glowing reviews) and think it is one of the most capable all around bikes EVER! To that end, I agree that is sad to see its retirement. However, when you look at the bicycle arms race and the trends in the "Trail" category with bikes going with a bit longer suspension , slacker HT and longer wheel base (and yes, frame storage), it comes as no real surprise that Ibis would have to counter punch with these updates to my beloved Ripley. Thankfully they've done it to perfection . . . exactly what you'd expect from Ibis! Once again, great review Jason . . . keep'em comin'!!!

The industry just goes round and round. Last year, it was all down country, now we're headed back to trail bikes. Next everything will become enduro again, and then we'll circle back to cross country and start the whole thing over again. That said, both the V4 and V5 seem great.

Thanks! I watched your video straight away. As always, very good! It's crazy to see how you can just move the bike around almost effortlessly... such a powerful rider. I'm very small. 142 lbs right now haha and not very strong. Been riding for over 30 years now including racing for that long... xc racing. My preference is always lighter faster bikes. My current favorite, the one I grab almost every morning, is the Cannondale Scalpel. 23 lbs!!

Thanks to you Jason about 5 months ago I pulled the trigger and bought the V4 and couldn’t be happier. I purchased it in the bad apple red color and get many compliments. For all the differences you pointed out, I would have no desire to get the V5.

I think we’ve pretty much reached the peak of what a bike can do. Suspension can only be developed so much before you can’t go any further. Kinematics and gravity and bumps will have a finite limit at some point. And that’s why all bikes are starting to look the same now… The rear has a path of travel. How many times can you reinvent that before you find the pinnacle sweet spot? Not that many!

I’m a huge fan of the previous Ripley but I’m disappointed in the added frame weight all because Ibis has chosen to consolidate the platform and use identical front and rear triangles for both the Ripley and the Ripmo with just different linkage. The v5 could easily still be light and snappy even at 140/130mm had they chosen to optimize the Ripley as its own bike.

@@jimnarvel9794 we race the state series in West Virginia. I switched to a Ripley from a 100mm Scott Spark because our courses have some pretty legit downhills with massive rock gardens and drops. I’m still running the stock Fox setup, the 130mm is probably just slightly more than I need but I don’t think it really hampers me, I’ve been really happy with the fork. Running full AXS XX1 drivetrain and AXS dropper, Enve bars, stem and M6 wheels (went with the M6 over the M5 for the wider rim) For tires I’m running a Vitoria Barzo / Mezcal combo and have been really happy with their performance. I also run a Vitoria airliner in each tire so I can run low pressures and so I can ditch a tube when I’m racing. Bike comes in at 25lbs with pedals and bottle cage in an XL

Love my original v4, it's just so good for 90% of the riding I do since it can be both a burlier XC bike and light duty trail bike (if that makes any sense). This v5 is definitely 'more' bike than I would personally need as it's now more 'trail' oriented and burlier, or so it seems... so no upgrade here. very curious as to what the next generation Exie looks like though in the Ibis lineup!

I have a feeling the V4 was the perfect size for it to be a trail bike with some xcountry spirit. Stable and agile and light enough to be a xcountry bike with great climbing capabilities and with enough travel for trails and decent descends. I may also be bias because I own a Ripley V4, but I love my Ripley it’s just perfect for trails in many ways. Great video like always, blessings 🙏🏼.

Love J's reviews and assume we'll see Ripmo V3 review soon. Not sure if you mentioned it but the Ripley V5 and Ripmo v3 are the same exact carbon frame as eachother, just different linkage parts. This had to be a cost savings measure by Ibis, and although that setup is fine for the Ripmo it's a bummer for Ripley owners because the frame is built essentially to enduro standards and therefore as you mentioned almost 2 pounds heavier. Queue the weight weenie comments but one of the main reasons to have a shorter travel bike is because they are lighter, better pedalling, etc.

Just pulled the trigger on a Pivot 429 4 days ago. I saw this video pop up and my heart sunk like a made a huge error......I now don't regret doing the Pivot. I looked hard at the Ripley V4, but at my 200+lbs in kit and the fairly uggo color options (drywall???) I went for the 429. (yumyum's previous favorite bike I believe...)

I owned a ripmo years ago and the Ripley 4. The ripmo I would describe as ugly, cparticularly in the old ibis color schemes. It rode so good though. The Ripley was never ugly, but I certainly was never in to the curved top tube at all. This one looks like a mini HD6 and I love that! But to each their own.

I love my v4. But it’s my only bike and I got it when I lived in a different area with flatter terrain. I’m excited to throw a leg over the new v5. My riding has become more biased to ripping on the down so excited to see what the changes feel like. But I hear you on mourning the zippy pop of the v4 - it’s one of the reasons I have not considered a new bike in the past 5 years!

Excellent review, Jason! I recently bought a heavily discounted (40% off!) Ripley V4 to fill the "downcountry" void in my quiver, and I absolutely love it. It might my my favorite bike ever. I also ride a SB130 as my all-mountain choice, so the V5 Ripley does not appeal me at this time. But I do think the V5 would meet the need for someone who is seeking a single, "do-it-all" ride.

While haven’t ridden it I noticed the reach and top tube are nearly identical (at least in size Medium) to the v2 Medium Ripmo which I currently ride. I probably would love this bike as for me the v4 Ripley was noticeably less capable than the Ripmo for steep descents. However the Ripmo has always been slightly more bike than I need. I was quite comfortable with the Yeti SB130 but preferred the ride feel of the Ripmo better (when I was in the market 3 years ago). This is probably the ideal bike for me but I will not be getting a new bike anytime soon. I try for 10 years every time I upgrade (if the bike lasts that long). Thanks for a great review.

Yeah, if the previous Ripley wasn't quite enough bike and the old Ripmo was just a bit too much, you are the exact person this new Ripley was built for! I think you'll be very impressed with it. Better suspension feel than the previous Ripmo and it's much more easy going than the Yeti SB130 or 140... the rear end of the new Ripley is incredible and second to non... so buttery smooth!!

I have both the v4s ripley and the v2s ripmo, and I feel both bikes are amazing for their roles and abilities. This new ripley would be a great bike in-between, but I don't think they should stop making the ripley v4s. Personally, I love my ripley, it's like a off road sports car. If things get ruff, I like the ripmo v2s how it is. The reason I got the ripley was because of how well it climbed and how fast it is. It's not just fast, but it's easy to move around the trails in a fun, playful manner. I personally think ibis should make all 3. I can't wait to try the v5, I believe the yeti sb140, trail 429, and revel rascal v2 would be good bikes for one bike to do everything. I just feel the ibis ripley v4s handles 80% to 90% of my trails so we'll it's hard to see it go. The ripley is a better bike for dupont, or most south eastern trails, ripmo is better for bike parts.

The Ripley AF hasn't changed, yet... Last fall I built a nice Ripley AF with factory suspension etc. I know you were impressed with that platform once before. I’ve wanted an Ibis since the first Mojo and just recently moved from an Evil Offering to the v4s for my 1 bike stable. I love what I gained in the agility, climbing and speed of the v4s, but also miss what I lost in the downhill capability of the offering. This new v5 seems like it hits that in between spot and I love the idea of the XM since at 5’10” I’m almost always between a M and L. Makes me wonder how it compares with the newer Following … Thanks for another great review!

Glad to see this Jason. I had a feeling this was going to be your take. Did you know this? The frame is the same on both bikes? The clevis is the only difference, aside from the rear shock and fork. You could buy the clevis, which Ibis will make available. Then you could have 2 bikes.

So it seems like this is less Ripley and more like a baby ripmo. literally the same frame as the ripmo. I assume the engineers designed the frame to accommodate the needs of the ripmo primarily and build it up beefy. I would guess that the new frames are just heavier since they are built burlier . I get what yum Yum is saying about how he was reminded of the original ripmo when experiencing the fifth generation Ripley. The first generation Ripmo was Great. It's interesting to think about that every time you ride the fifth gen Ripley You're of riding a short, travel ripmo at its core. I also love what they did with the sizing adding a extra medium that's fantastic idea gonna get a precise fit for the common size 5'10". I also see your point about adding a 36 that would be a killer set up with a weight penalty of course, but still might be a good set up, depending on the t terrain

I have a Ripley v4. 29#(heavy tires) Love it. Wife has a Ripley Af. 32#. Love it. I have an Orbea Rallon. Very nice. I do prefer the dw link for stand up pedaling. 35#. The weight difference matters, but not as much as my fitness. Unless I was xc racing, I would rather have a better performing bike. Of course I hope the new Ripley is still poppy and playful.

Thank you for doing these bike reviews. I always gauge the performance of the bike with the amount of excitement in your voice. I ask that you put data into your reviews. Possibly time your down hill rides. Since you typically ride the same course. You can give a start stop time on the course and compare stats. Speed is always a result of well composed bike. The rider is the same. Just my thoughts

The geo of the ripley af with a 140 fork was perfect, it could fight up a weight class but was still super fast to excellerate. Still, I always felt my af was under gunned, leading me to the YT Izzo. 130 rear is where it's at. Geo wise I never felt the difference between a 66 degree and a 65 degree ht was a detrement, even when climbing the tightest of switchbacks. The wheelbase is more important, and with the XM sizing, I think they're nailed it... at least hypothetically. I'm dying to test one out.

This build is a bit portly, slap a dissector or bontrager xr4 up front, leave the rekon in the back and use a lighter weight wheel build, probably adds up to a "zippier" pedalling bike. Also, using a non-traction tuned shock would likely help the pedal feel as well.

As a bigger rider, i hate when the shocks are in line with the rear triangle like this, seems to require more air pressure to get sag, which means i would be towards the max pressure for this shock. I don't have this issue with the newer pivot linkage. So I'll stick with pivot.

Interesting. I had 140 psi in the Float shock... very low pressure and never bottomed it out.

I’m so interested in this topic and loved the video. The Ripley has been my single bike for almost a decade-I currently ride the V2 and it’s been great. For many years, I’ve wanted to augment it with a race bike, and this year I finally pulled the trigger on a Mach 4SL. Great bike for racing and light trail duty. I dropped 3-4 pounds and can really feel it. I thought I might take my V2 Ripley and go to a Fox 36/140 to make it a little better on rowdy terrain, but this V5 might make more sense. My one question concerns the wheelbase-I never liked my V2 on tight switchbacks; just a little too ponderous, especially in an XL size. If the V5 is even worse, that’s concerning.

I have yet STILL to find a short travel trail bike that bombs like the Tallboy. That's the standard. My new version Trail 429 is the closest thing but also has the climbing ability of the old Ripley. So to me, that's still the bee's knees.

I just can't get excited about a 140/130 Ripley that outweighs my middling spec'd Ripmo V1. I was excited to see an Ibis 140/130 trail bike but not at that weight. Was also sad to see that the Stumpy 15 is a Stumpy EVO replacement rather than a new Stumpy trail bike, and there's nothing currently in that trail bike space from Specialized. Seems the Trek Fuel EX started the "let''s make bikes heavier again" trend. I missed the light trail bike window.

Yeah, I know there are people out there that really send and hammer on bike but they are the fringe not the mainstream majority... Santa Cruz, Evil and Pivot have been over building bike for awhile now..... it's weird to say buy my Cannondale Scalpel is my favorite bike right now because it's an actual light weight trail bike. Go figure, a light bike you can actual ride all day without feeling like trash at the end of the ride.

Love the video. You should def try a Fox 36. I have an Orbea Occam M10 and the same frame can be used as a 140mm short travel or 150/160mm long travel bike. I went for the LT which came with DHX coil rear, carbon frame and Fox 150mm 36 Grip 2. I've put XC tyres on it, carbon wheels (I will be reducing travel to 140both ends too) and it really rides more like a down country bike. Fast, zippy and great climbing tractio. To make it really light, I may swap to lightweight inline shock, which would save a lot of weight too. For reference, I also have Scalpel SE2 and Mondraker Foxy R. The Foxy is very much more of an agrressive trail bike and the Scalpel you know well (I think of it as an overforked XC bike). Looks like Ibis have followed a similar route and consolidating trail frames and differentiating with build kit. PS Love the vids.

This new Ripley might fit a growing "hole" in the market - "trail bike" market, albeit in a bit weighty fashion. A bike like the Spur or Spec Evo is a XC/trail bike. The new Spec Stumpy is now an All-Mountain/trail bike. The Giant Trance is still in that trail bike pocket. That frame also got a bit porky. I no longer have a need for an AM/trail/ light enduro-ish bike like the new Stumpy. That is a whole lotta bike. The step down to the Spur is a pretty big gap. I like what the new Ripley is bringing to the table. It's cool it can run 275 out back also. I'm still a fan of that with a burly 2.6x275 tire for certain occasions. Too bad the frame gained so much weight though. Something I can likely live with. Thanks for the great review.

Comparing bikes with similar travel is also weird because different brands CLEARLY have different goals in mind for how their bike rides. Of course a Tallboy is going to feel more plush than a 429 - that’s what SC suspension is known for while Pivot’s is known for being a little firmer and more supportive. And you would put a 120mm bike and a 130mm bike in the same category? To each his own but you put some wild takes out there lately.

Great job on your channel and reviews. In about May, I just got a screaming deal on last year’s Scalpel SE, and I totally agree with your review. It is really easy to select this bike when going to ride an XC flavored trail. The climbing is made easy, and the descended is fun. It is light, so you have to ride accordingly. And I’ve just gotta ask, what on earth do you do for a living/bike $?

@@mtbyumyum OMG you will never believe what happened. I met Chris last Sunday at Park City on the corner of Silver Queen and the Mid-Mountain Trail. He was stopped there with his kids, he had Draper gloves on, I said hey do you know Yum Yum from Draper, he said he was just texting you and introduced himself as Chris from Salt Cycles. I said wow you and Jason are my heroes. He offered to show me a good way down which was Mid-Mountain to CMG and it was great. What do you know I got to go Mach-Chicken (well kind of) with Chris and his kids. I camped at Wasatch State Park it was fantastic. Day one I road up the paved road to the WOW trail and then down the trail, and it is one of the best / funnest trails I have ever ridden. It was on Friday the morning after the Thunder storm and the dirt was great. I also road the trails around the Campsite, Phosphate, Dutchman. Donkey Ridge,,,. Chris also said I should do the Crest and I did. It was an incredible ride! While I was ridding with Chris I mentioned I wanted to trade my Ripmo V2 and Ripley V4 for a new Ripley V5. I am going to call him and ask him for Ideas. I had a great time in your area and Thanks so much for your great videos, knowledge and passion. Patrick

T429 feels lighter... not sure it actual is.... T429 feels more efficient with greater support in the shock.... V5 Ripley feels more easy going, playful and plush out back

Why keep the Fox 34 on the V5? A Fox 36 makes way more sense for a 140mm fork. Ibis already bumped up the weight by a couple pounds from V4, so another 1/3# with the Fox 36 wouldn't hurt. If they want to make it a trail bike, then Ibis should have made it a trail bike. I have the Pivot 429 enduro build, and the Fox 36 is excellent for a 140 fork. I think that Ibis may have missed the mark with the new Ripley. Great review, as always, Jason. I'm sure you'll be reviewing the new Ripmo next?

Sounds like they jumped the line to the more capable Trail bike side instead of the lighter XC side. So is there a gap now between where the Exie is and where the old Ripley V4 was? Love the storage in the down tube and that satiny Forest Green color is beautiful!

Unrelated, but I've also gotten a good impression of Yeti from your reviews. Do you think you'll review the new SB 135 with 27.5 wheels? I've had a Pivot Trail 429 for the last two years and it's been the best riding bike I've ever owned. I was thinking about also getting a 27.5 bike and the SB 135 is one of the few all 27.5 current bikes (and the Pivot Shadowcat.)

I've not ridden the sb135 but I spent a week on the Shadowcat and honestly, it's been on my mind so many times just never pulled the trigger on it. It's hard for me to pass up the many other excellent 29ers in the Shadowcat category... hope that makes sense? but I am one bad decision away from ordering a shadowcat... it's an incredible bike!!

Great review. Seems an odd choice by Ibis. Unless they intro a new XC bike, they don't have a "smaller" bike they can bump travel and geo to fill the void the V4 leaves, kinda like Trek did with the Fuel EX & Top Fuel. Bikes always evolve, but this feels like a straight up replacement and not an update. They took a trail runner and turned it into a boot!

I've been wearing Smith Forefront for the past 4 or so years. My wife recently had a very very bad crash... worst crash she's ever had. She suffered a concussion and badly damaged her Fox Pro Frame helmet in the process. After that I researched and bought all new helmets for us. We both switched over to this new Manifest. From what I can tell, it's the best/safest half lid available right now. It also fits me well and can easily hold my glasses with only using 1 hand to put my glasses on the helmet while riding. I really liked my rascal from a few years ago but the sta was a bit slack.... full disclosure, I ran a 150mm fork on mine but with a 140mm Pike I bet the weight could get down... very interesting!

The stumpy feels a lot lighter under you at slower speeds... climbing for example. Once moving, think down hill, you don't really feel the weight of the Ripley.... feels balanced and fast.

Strangely I demo’d a Smuggler recently and thought it felt bulky for that trail duty category and even thought it descended more like an enduro…was considering Ripley for lighter duty but seems older model was more of the all day rig. Dang

Maybe look at a yt izzo. The core 4 build has a factory float dps with a few adjustments. I run mine really soft, but you can eek out more pedalling performance pretty easily if you want a stiffer feel. Geo is very comfortable for all day rides, weight is good (26lbs large with a dissector exo 3c front and a forkaster v2 exo 3c rear) and the geo can be adjusted by increasing the fork travel 10mm on the factory 34 or with an angle set to make it more descent focused if that's something you want.

Yeah, I think so... I've put over 200 miles on mine and my daughter just recently took it over as her xc race bike lol it's very light weight and very fast. The Cannondale, although similar to the ASR, is maybe just a tad more "trail" than the ASR.... both excellent XC bikes but the soul of the scalpel is a trail bike!! That's what makes that bike and the Pivot Mach 4 sl so interesting to me.... they're XC bikes with a bit of trail soul in the dna...
