Didn't T-Mobile just announce that they will be teaming up with SpaceX and offer county wide coverage like very soon. Why would I have a device just for emergencies. I currently have a spot and it works sorta but for hundreds a year I think I'll just get a new phone company.

All the cell companies have been saying that for a few years. They are still working out the kinks. As of right now, these devices are necessary for backcountry emergency communications.

Apple iOS 18 has this built in. I’ve tested it and it does work. It’s a little finicky but it’s a great step in the right direction.

This went live in certain areas about 2 weeks ago. I sent a satellite message last Saturday 11/30/24 with my Tmobile iPhone from a remote location in the Rocky Mtns and received a reply a few minutes later with no cellular service. Pretty cool if it starts to work in more areas.
