I have a 2019 front wheel drive Camry hybrid. Last December I did a round trip to Spain from the Netherlands, all and all about 5,000km's, about 3,107miles. Of which 2,500 miles on the Freeway @about 62 miles per hour. I came home with 4,3L per 100km on the trip computer, which is 54,7mpg. On my Camry, build in Japan, the trip computer matches the fillup calculation. This is on 18 inch wheels with a whole lot of Freeway cruising. The Camry is more efficient on the Freeway than the 2016 PriusIV that I had before. I am very happy with the the Camry's fuel efficiency.

@vlj11336 ай бұрын
Those 16" wheels with the taller sidewalls also make for the quietest, plushest ride offered by any Camry. So, with the LE in FWD, you get the lowest price (by far), the best fuel mileage (by far), the plushest ride, the quietest ride, the lowest maintenance costs with the most affordable tires (by far), and the most reliable car, since it's the simplest model, with the least electronic gadgetry. As Kirk said in the video, who cares about flashier wheels? It's a Camry. No one buys a Camry for head-turning style or amazing sporty performance. It's an appliance. It's your consistent, reliable butler, not your sexy PIA trophy wife. It's supposed to remain in the background, always ready, willing, and able to serve you without complaint, and to do so seemingly forever. The Camry LE in FWD with no moonroof...the best daily driver and all-around value in the current automotive world. You chose well.

Kirk, your reviews are the BEST! Thank you! I have driven Toyota hybrids (Prius/Camry/Highlander/NX300h) since 2005. I have tried all three drive modes on all of these models. ECO mode slows down throttle response and HVAC, so my response is to hit the throttle harder and turn up the HVAC, negating the intended effect. Normal mode is normal. Sport mode gives you very fast and sensitive throttle response, so I am lighter on the throttle. Because of the way I drive, my mpg remains the same no matter what mode I use. For me, the easiest way to increase mpg's is to use HVAC in full auto mode, NOT use cruise control, and best of all, coast rather than brake, without annoying other drivers. When coasting or coming to a stop, I have learned how to keep the braking in regen as much as possible without using friction brakes. In my 2020 NX300h I am currently averaging 36 mpg in this car rated at 33/30.

Crown owner here. Stay in the lower half of the eco portion of the radial and you’ll be electric only as long as you have 3 or more bars of electric power. You can find the perfect anchor spot for your foot and basically be pure electric till it’s empty if the road permits. The slow braking is absolutely it, that little part of the radial is great for keeping track. This is my first owned car and it’s been interesting learning the little nuances. I started with about 29.6 mpg in the xle trim…. So yea. I was heavy foot harry for a bit. I’ve climbed from this to now 38.2 mpg. If I reset the reader, I’m sure I could be at a consistent 43 or higher, but I enjoy ticking up slowly but surely. From 27 miles to 10.5k I can wholeheartedly say this hybrid system not only has some kick, but its efficiency is top notch. Next variants I just want more electric capability. Stronger motors for what would essentially be more wiggle room in the electric only driving speeds, larger capacity battery for obvious hopes, and the torque that comes with the additional strength is just gravy. Even just a plug in variant of the crown.

great video. I think there's one more tip. On the gear shifter is a B mode. From what I read this is a heavy regen braking mode. It's not like the B gear in a traditional automatic transmission which was used for downhill slowing. So there's no danger of switching to B at any speed. You can essentially use B as a way to brake, lessening the need for the disc brakes. In fact, if you need to brake in a hurry like an emergency, switch to B while applying the disc brakes hard. It will stop fast. There is so little wear and tear on my brakes on my Prius C because of this.

I own a 2023 RAV4 Hybrid XSE, and here is another tip for better MPGs. This may sound counter-intuitive at first. Spend LESS time in EV mode, and more in "hybrid" mode. The hybrid mode is when both the ICE and battery are moving the car; go to 5:55 - 6:30 and see the energy flow meter (right circle). In hybrid mode, even when the ICE is running, the car is still doing around 60 instantaneous MPG (the white bar in the left circle). Also, keep the battery between 5-7 bars (out of 8) state of charge. The hybrid mode will run even more efficiently when the battery level is high. Since I started doing this in my RAV4 hybrid, my EV driving ratio has decreased, but my MPGs have increased by about 10%.

In other hybrid news, the CX-50 hybrid was announced and I'm very disappointed that the base trim CX-50 doesn't get the hybrid engine. The hybrid CX-50 will start at the preferred trim at $35k and you will be forced to go with a slow power lift gate...sigh Mazda c'mon. A base hybrid starting at $33k would've been such great value

Would have been too competitive with the RAV4 base price, while being far superior interior wise. I'm sure Toyota had some rules for using their hybrid system

@@meowmeow2759 I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case, but Mazda has also been making some pretty wonky decisions when it comes to trims and options for the last few years. Let's not even talk about the CX-70 debacle so yeah...dunno what Mazda is smoking sometimes

I would personally get the XSE AWD trim just because I want the handling, extra speed, leather seats, pano roof, and JBL speakers. You can always go on tirerack and get a new set of smaller wheels with michelin all season tires. That way it will still handle quite well because of the michelin tires despite the smaller wheels. The smaller wheels should be able to boost the mpg by 3-4. The camry is still the king when it comes to reliability and practicality. I find it funny that so many people still make fun of camrys and the people who drive them. Jokes on them when they have to deal with major repairs out of nowhere while the people who own camrys can put their money into savings, IRAs, and stocks and watch their money compound year over year.

@AliKhan-gu7xp6 ай бұрын
Hey Kirk, Something to consider. From the road, it looks like you are on I-75 in the FT Myers area. Florida uses large pea gravel pebbles in their road construction which creates a high rolling resistance on vehicles. This lowers the MPG on all cars by some percentage. If you are testing a car for MPG on a Florida HWY, (I-95, I-75, Turnpike), add 8-10% to your final fuel MPG number. Highways in Georgia, Alabama, use small crush rock and those highways are very smooth. This is clear as day if you listen for road noise from the highway. Road noise on Florida highways is tremendous compared to Georgia and Alabama because of the materials used in the road construction creating high resistance on the tires.

Toyota hybrid mpg is decent only if you drive like a grandma. My friend has 2020 Camry xle hybrid, and with his or my driving we normally see anywhere from 33-35mpg. I have 2022 rav4 hybrid se, and on a normal driving I get around 30mpg but if I do a lot of highway driving (LA-Vegas or LA-SF) at a higher speed then I get like 25-26mpg. If there’s a lot of traffic, the mpg goes up due to the nature of hybrid system. I think one time l got like 44mpg when it took 2.5hours from downtown LA to Ontario, and 46mpg when it took me 1.5 hours from Huntington Beach to Irvine. But on a regular day driving, it gets around 30mpg maybe 32mpg on a good day.

I rented a Prius in Japan drove it 5000km in six weeks. Did the calculations at the end and averaged 94mpg (4 passengers and luggage). The US regulations greatly hurt the MPG on these vehicles. The Japanese versions are crazy good. This seems to be a common theme on them too. I have seen dozens of others getting 90+ in Japan with the Prius. I would have thought its because of the slower speed limit but everyone on the highways in Japan is going 120+. From Osaka to Fukuoka we were doing 140 most of the way just to keep up with other cars.

Great review! A few things, being a Japanese car, I wonder if its internal computer is set to US or Imperial gallons, and that’s why there is a discrepancy? The LCA - you only need to hold the indicator until it beeps at you, you can then let it go. In the UK, it only works on Motorways, not local or A roads 😢 The “self charging” hybrid system - having had a few in the past, the one thing that always annoyed me is how “weak” the electric only system is, in that it will come out of EV mode the moment you go over a certain speed (36MPH in my NX350h), or go past the ECO range, when using the accelerator. It’s the main reason why I went in the end for the NX450h+ with the plug in system, that will stay in EV once set, providing there is enough battery left, and can do up to 85MPH (so I’m told, officer 😂), in EV only. I presume they’ll do a plug in of the Camry as well at some point?

RE: Highway on-ramps - It depends on where you live. Certainly, if the on-ramp is long and allows a leisurely acceleration to highway speed, go for it. But where I live, many of them are short af and require much harder acceleration to safely merge. Basically, "your mileage will very" on this particular tip. Be safe. Otherwise, love your videos man.
@rightlanehog31516 ай бұрын
True. Your mileage will vary very much depending on how you drive.
@markcoopers19306 ай бұрын
The short tight curve on-ramps are fun. Foot to the floor, tire squeal and pray the folks in the travel lane are leaving the proper space between cars: safer than going too slow and trying to merge 20 mph under the flow of traffic (or heaven forbid stop in the middle of the on-ramp).
@pyramidion59116 ай бұрын
Most people freak out and over accelerate anyway. 99.999% of the time you don't need a giant burst speed of to merge on the freeway. I have driven damn near everything on wheels in damn near every state, now I deliver in a large Metropolitan area for fun, trust when I say you don't need to slam on the gas to merge. Most people need to learn how to slow down when merging if anything.

But this Camry LE fell in between the price of the two with better gas mileage. Those other two had the premium sound systems but, as a former car audio type, you can get an Audiotech Fischer Match amp/DSP and new speakers all around with some sound damping and get better sound for the same price. Why are people complaining about the price? The Toyota Camry is one of the best cars in every aspect. There are people who pay double for Chinese cars but then complain about the Camry, despite its price increase. This is a common trend nowadays, as the prices of all cars have risen.

AWD is the "spare tire" problem of people who say they don't like it deleted "just in case" they get blow out and they feel they will be safe and able to flip it out themselves - BUT if people wait and get used to the out of sight below floor storage they might decide it is really more a "driving" benefit not to mention carrying something that is big and heavy for no driving enjoyment benefit eh.
