I mean things still failed during y2k its just that due to the time change the computers cant figure out where to place things. Its the opposite of turning your phones date back to like 1995 when you text someone the phone will automatically put it in the correct spot in the thread youd literally have to scroll up to find your text. Its just certain changes a cimputer cant figure out and thus fails. A y2k like event might be even worse in todays age considering how dependent we are on our technology though i doubt all computers would fail and planes would fall out of the sky. Nowadays we keep our shit up to date to prevent a y2k event

@candyneige66092 жыл бұрын
@@johnoofsatchurch Yes, these devices uses a different timecode system that does start in 1900, unlike UNIX which starts in 1970, so for these devices, when the day comes, the different timecode system overflows to 1900, so it's a bit like the Y2K bug, but 36 years later, and finally, on that on day in 2106, the UNIX timecode system overflows to 1970.

Replacing the 32-bit integer with a 64-bit one at the kernel level (something Linux has been doing for a long time and since version 5.6 regardless of whether or not the CPU is 64-bit) extends the overflow date to 292 billion years from now - so that sounds like a fix to me. Of course, this also breaks a lot of software that expects `time_t` to be 32-bit, because compilers throw errors when the types aren’t matching - so when an OS is updated in this way, a lot of apps must also be heavily modified to even compile, let alone run. Also, Windows uses a completely different method to store time compared to the Unix-like method discussed in this video, so the only users who need worry are Linux (Android, Chrome OS) users and XNU/Darwin (iOS, macOS) users. As for embedded systems, well, that’s where most of the issues arise. Luckily my 2017 Mirai, unlike the Prius example in this video, happens to actually be connected to the Internet whenever my phone is connected to it, allowing the car itself to get software updates, so perhaps that’s a solution that car manufacturers can adopt in other cases.

But we mostly got through that problem without a major breakdown. So I’m cautiously optimistic about Y36. Also, there’s probably still an embedded system somewhere in the world that still thinks it’s the year 1924. Why didn't engineers in 1970 foresee this simple problem that would likely happen within their own lifetime?
@mxmln86992 жыл бұрын
Because when they developed something as “innovative” as computers were back then, they absolutely didn’t foresee that basically everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) would rely on computers (and therefore on that technology.) I’m not saying that the evolvement wasn’t there back then, but nobody knew that technology was going to literally explode in progress literally 50 years ago. How could they have possibly known? If you told the original Unix developers that there was even the slightest chance their system might still be in use in 2038, they probably would have called in some large, friendly men in white coats to haul you away.
@rh40099 ай бұрын
In 1970, computing wasn't even enlightened enough to think "640k ought to be enough for everyone" yet. The concept of "embedded computer" did not yet exist, meaning the plan was to update the software "in the future". Even today, for most general-purpose computers, 2038 is a non-issue; software has already been updated to use 64-bit timestamps, or the update is pending; the real issue is about those embedded computers for which no updates are planned, and for those for which updates are not even possible. Luckily, many embedded computers don't actually care about real-time, ie, are happily reset to all-zeros when their power is interrupted. I would expect automotive ECU's to fall in this category. They might have the opposite problem, ie, if their power is not interrupted for 68 years; then the timestamp would overflow while the device is in operation - see "Boeing 787 needs to be rebooted every 51 days"
@C0ck_team Жыл бұрын
fun solution: instead of starting the time from 1970 at position 1 in int32 value, you can simply start it as the lowest value (-9,223,372,036,854,775,808) in int64, or 0 in uint64 making us more time to find a way to use 128 bit integer values in modern systems

That issue with cars can actually be fixed, funnily enough, with a custom ECU. Most people who tune/modify their vehicles will replace the stock ECU with one they can modify themselves, so I imagine in the next decade we'll probably see 2038 compliant modifications to ECU software to prevent this from impeding performance or safety equipment.

Note that there are "signed" and "unsigned" integers, not "assigned" and "unassigned" integers, which are meaningless terms. Signed means it can represent negative as well as positive numbers because it uses one bit for the sign, but this means the absolute extent is halved. *32-bit signed:* -2,147,483,648 to 2,147,483,647 *unsigned:* 0 to 4,294,967,295 *64-bit signed:* -9,223,372,036,854,775,808 to 9,223,372,036,854,775,807 *unsigned:* 0 to 18,446,744,073,709,551,615

64bit systems are only trick programming done with duel and quad core computers. They still require system32. System32 is just one of the thing that expires in 2038. Syswow64 doesnt work without system32. Install a 64bit system on a single core and than ill believe computers can survive. Computers dying out isnt the scariest part of this horror story, the scariest part is The Borg-They have a 2mb system on a single core. Ya can do it.... its just, ya have to start all over again from scratch, and it took like 3 decards just to create the 32bit system, by pysically making 2147m cards with code hole punched into them before shining a light on the cards and recording the light input on a screen. Idk how long it would take to record 64bit, let alone a 2mb worth of cards. The computers go offline in 2038, or sooner, guaranteed. There is no solving this problem. The computer is like a stopwatch sort of (at least in this analogy), it counts to 2147m. Time is a length, ie. Length of time. Sure, you can measure 500m with 2x 2m rulers, accurately, but the ruler is not a 500m ruler. Thats kinda how 64bit systems work, but really, they'll forever be a 32bit stopwatch. And they stop counting in 2038, no if ands or buts about it. ____ If i were like leader of the world, I'd create a computer that projects the light without needing cards.... maybe thats how ya can make a 2mb system on a single core however, regardless, ya need start everything from scratch again..... the global project that is the computer will have to start all over. If we had a 2mb system on a single core, we could still make the duel and quad cores and have 4 or even 8mb systems in 20 trillion years.

@@PedroBastozz the 1970 was a glitch on ios 10 (I think so) was fixed within the same ios version, unless you purposefully never updated your iPhone even in that version it the UNIX problem won't affect your old iPhone, and I'm sure only the iPhone 1-5s use 32 bit architecture, the 6 changed to 64 bit and we're probably gonna start to see ARM (M1) phones in the next years
