To all my You Tube friends Thank you very much for your warm and empathic welcome! I really feel very much honoured by you our YT community. First of all I'm fine and as well my family. The reason why I can not post new videos on a regular basis is simply due to extremely limited time. We all need to do business for our living and YT is only a hobby. I do not earn money on YT and I don't want to even in the future. And to be honest I never would earn money on YT to make a living out of it due to my bad English as a matter of fact. But I love to give a bit enthusiasm to the radio community for the fascinating radio engineering. Therefore I stay posting in English even it is not good. But that way we can reach the world. If I earn an nice feed back as I always got from you all my dear YT friend it is more than I want. So I have to apologize that I need to concentrate to pay my bills first to feed my family... Nevertheless I try to post videos when ever I can. Hope you will still support me in the fantastic way you did in the past. Stay safe and healthy even in this crazy times. All the best from Peter 73's

You English is just fine. Can certainly understand needing to earn money to support your family. Glad to hear all is ok. I think some of us were worried. Anyway as long as you post I will support it. Your videos are really educational. In fact I've gotten back into repairs because of you. We will be here to watch when you are able to post. Take care and stay safe in this crazy world we have right now.

Lovely to see you're well and making videos. I've repaired a couple of radios that were quite badly damaged by older amps, fortuantely I don't see it often as the older valve amps don't seem to be that common but I suspect that would make it more likely that people wouldn't know about the possibility of damage.

I use an ARB-704 to isolate the radio PTT sent from my Ameritron AL80B key input. I don't think the coild voltage is that high BUT the relay coil kickback can damage the radio PTT send. You see, I have used my Yaesu 747 (I know you have one of those Peter), a Yaesu FT-950 and now a Yaesu FTDX3000. In all cases, I believe a transistor is used to ground the amp's relay coil. If I am not mistaken, I think the amp's coil voltage is 10v (or maybe 16v?). And the current is just a few milliamps and most modern transceivers can handle it. The problem is, the inductive surge of turning on/off the relay coil. If fact, sometimes the diodes on those snubber circuits fail open and you never know that happened. So Ameritron markets the ARB-704 for those who want to play it safe and it is a bit more complex than your single transistor circuit but it is basically the same principle where the output transistor on the radio sources a larger external transistor to absorb the 1) diode kickback and 2) is also rated at 120V DC or so for the older amps like the Kenwood in your video. I am most familiar with Yaesu and for all I know, the other brands of radios use small relays as you mention, rather than transistors for grounding the amp relay circuits. Another thing is the ALC connection between radio and amp; of course older amps need adjusting. I think Yaesu rigs use -4v (or-5v) as maximum ALC voltage and Ameritron can source -10v. That may or may not be enough to damage the ALC in the radio but it may have damaged my FT-950 ALC. My AL80B is older and does not have the 5K pot to adjust ALC voltage so I built my own. However, I may not have set it correctly. My FT=050 finals did eventually die for some reason (after 12 years) and that is the only thing I can think of that may have caused it. My max ALC coming from the AMP may have been around 10v to the radio. Anyway, thanks MUCH for your videos and GLAD to see you are back again. I look forward to more of your material, by far the most professional and instructive I have seen on radio repair! BTW I will not use the AL80B AMP with my FTDX3000 (similar PA stage is FT-950) until I have this figured out. I did replace the finals on the 950 and all is well with that now but I do not want to use the amp with that one either!

I always used an external extra relais between it, but in FM/CW that can give a problem because of the extra switching time, TRX is switching full to power while the relais in the amp still is in rx.

Wonderful to have you back Peter...you've been truly missed! Some of the newer radios (IC-7600, IC-7851 etc.) have the option for MOSFET switching that is menu selectable...the MOSFET can handle the higher voltages, in my case the 7851 can handle 250V/200mA with that function selected. You still have to be very careful as the default setting in that radio for PA switching is only 16V/0.5A. Great topic Peter, thanks! 73 - Dino KLØS
