In todays video I am explaining and demonstrating how to attach your ham radio gear for the first time. I also make suggestions for connecting your ham radio gear so that it is easily manageable by using Anderson Power Poles. In addition I go over how to connect your radio to your power supply and an auto tuner. Links for everything in the video is below:

Thank you! Finally, a source for clear information for absolute non-techs like me. I might even shed a few tears of relief, this is so good! I think some newbies give up because it’s so hard to find guidance from someone who keeps in mind THROUGHOUT their instructions that the student(s) may know nothing about any part of the process. No slippage into tech phrases that make younglings’ eyes cloud over in confusion. Jedi master, thanks!

Newer vehicles can be really difficult to install a Ham radio you may find just locating a spot to mount it to be a real problem If you install a radio with high power output you may have problems with it interfering with your cars computer ...For mobile use I recommend 2 meters FM the antennas are small and so are the radios most of them anyway . I ran a 10 watt radio for many years and with a nearby repeater you can have the advantage of the repeaters power and wide range from a Hi building, tower or hill . Bob

Thanks for the video. I’ve had my general for about six months. I’ve played with and made a few contacts on the UV-5R, listened to some stations on the Tecsun PL-368 and RTL-SDR. I’ve Fiddled with some JS8call on those as well. I’ve saved up some cash and am looking to purchase my first real radio. Missed a great deal on a FT-857D at HAMfest in Waynesville NC this morning, I was just a bit shy of cash. In about a month, if I don’t change my mind again, I’ll pick up an IC-7300. But I really need to know what other gear I need. Like a power supply, obviously an antenna (but which one) and tuner. I don’t want to hook this up and let all the magic smoke out. So now I’m trying to learn this side of it. So again, thanks for the video.

Another great video, Scott! As to the Anderson Power Poles, they are great quick disconnect but for a permanent connection in unprotected environments I might like a more secure connection. In my job designing cables on aircraft, we would use a screw-on locking connector to connect things that were not very robust (like a RJ45 Ethernet cable connecting through a pressure bulkhead). So I don’t disagree with power poles to a point, just can understand the argument to a degree. I do have power poles all over my shack and mobile where I am connecting equipment quickly. I am just getting started on Ham Radio. If you have a resonant antenna instead of the tuner, do you use an antenna analyzer in that place? What about a Power and SWR meter? Do you need that?
@HR4NT
@HR4NT Жыл бұрын
The analyzer is to allow you to see what your SWR is on an antenna and then make adjustments by cutting the wire on the antenna in small increments until the SWR is where you want it to be, which is usually as close to 1:1 as you can. Once the antenna is tuned, you do not need the analyzer again until you build another antenna down the road. You will always need a power source whether that be from a power supply or a battery. SWR Meters are optional as many radios have them built in. However I rarely use mine as my antennas are already tuned. I hope this made sense. If not, email me through my website. I have a 500 watt amplifier and was wondering about how to use power poles for high amperage devices. I really don't want to buy another crimper just for a couple of those large power pole connections.
@HR4NT
@HR4NT Жыл бұрын
From what I have seen, it seems that the larger power pole connectors would be necessary if you want to use them. Maybe check with one of the online ham radio dealers and see if they have a ready made cable that you could use. Otherwise you will end up having to find a way to get the larger crimper set. Probably not what you wanted to hear, but from what i can tell from my research, that may be the only way. I hope this helps. Let me know what you come up with. I have not had any experience with amps just yet, but am interested. Thanks for the comment and for watching. 73!

@HR4NT
@HR4NT 10 ай бұрын
You will see losses in your coax if you go beyond 100 ft. Not a lot, but the longer the coax the more loss you will see. You can help this by using larger high quality coax like LMR 400 etc...but if you keep it under 100 feet you should be ok and probably won't notice any issues. I hope this helps. In addition, A video on how to know what power supply to buy would be awesome!

I may be able to do a more in depth video, but I only own one power supply at the moment. I use the Diamond GZV-4000. There is a variable knob on the unit that allows you to set the power level. I am under assumption that most power supplies for ham radio are like that as long as it is a power supply made for ham radio gear. The 40 amps on mine is a max amperage. It is perfectly safe at the level I have it set for with my 7300. I hope this helps. I will add your idea to my show boards. Thanks for the comment and for watching. 73!!!

Very helpful info for this newby! What power supply/how big do you recommend to run the 7300 and a 991 vs 7100 simultaneously with power to spare? What antenna tuner do you recommend with this setup? The 7300 has a limited built-in tuner, and am unclear on adding an external tuner - whys, and available choices. So the pictured tuner has 2 coax antenna inputs for separate antennas? Are there switches that can handle 4 or more antennas that would plug in to one of the tuner ports? Do you happen to know the wire gauge size on the 7300? Now on to your grounding video! Thanks much to you and your wife! 73, John KK7JBZ

I know this is an old video, but is it necessary to put a choke (not sure if that’s the right term) on your radio power cable like you have? Thanks
@HR4NT
@HR4NT 8 ай бұрын
Putting ferrites (basically a choke) on your cables is not necessary, but if you are having RFI issues it can definitely help out in eliminating sources of that RFI. I have bad RFI from an external source and was hoping that by putting an RFI kit on my radio that it would help eliminate a lot of it. The neighbor with the solar panels is ONE source of my RFI issues. Thanks for the comment and for watching. 73!

Do you recommend chokes on all power leads to your radios? I see one in a set of leads on the bench there.
@HR4NT
@HR4NT 11 ай бұрын
That is one of those things that is completely up to you. Is it absolutely necessary? No. Are there situations where it can be advantageous, yes. You just have to determine for you what is best. It won't hurt anything except your wallet. I hope this helped a bit. Thanks for the comment and for watching. 73!

How do you know what amp power pole connector to use?
@HR4NT
@HR4NT Жыл бұрын
I simply match the connector to the size wire I am using. The connectors are different diameters, so you can't add a large wire to a 15 amp connector, but it may fit the 30 amp. Hope this helps. Thanks for the comment and for watching. 73!!!

No. There is no need to tin the wires as the crimper will make a very tight contact to the wire and connectors. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching 73!!

So, in a beginners shack, 1 hf, 1 vhf/uhf, 1 power supply, maybe 1 ant tuner, do I need 45, 30, and 15 amp connectors? Seems to me 30 amp would work for everything. Thanks.
@HR4NT
@HR4NT Жыл бұрын
I think you will be just fine with 30 amp connectors. Those are the ones I use primarily and refill regularly. As for your shack, separating your radios is a personal decision. Some like the shack in a box like the 991A or the Icom 7100, etc...I personally just needed to separate them due to my situation with local net and my love for doing HF at the same time. I hope this helps and wish you the best of luck on setting up your shack. Let me know if I can help! Thanks for the comment and for watching. 73!

Depending on your radio, I assume it is an HF rig of some sort, you can grab a half wave end fed or some other type of antenna like the DX Commander and be up and running. Email me through my website, hamradiofornontechies.com and let me know what gear you have and maybe we can figure out a good solution for you. Without knowing what radio you are using, I can only guess at what to recommend. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching and for the comment. 73!

If you passed the exam and received your ticket well if you cannot figure out how to make simple and secure connections then my question is how did you pass your exam this is todays standard in ham radio most hams today do not even bother to make the simplest antenna like the dipole they go and buy one from say mfj really great that is why the hobby has gone downhill the standards have gone downhill.

The study guides for the exams do not go over Anderson power poles, so some may not know they exist. You have to admit, ham radio is a technical and sometimes difficult hobby.
