20KM River Paddle+Camp! Old Town Sportsman Discovery Solo 119

In this video I take my Old Town Sportsman Discovery Solo 119 out on a 20km paddle on a calm Manitoban river system, explore the area and enjoy my time. I also lounge around at camp and make some delicious food!

Just stumbled on your channel man. Funny I also have a white Ranger and the same freekin boat. I just sold it today because I found a 16 foot Kevlar canoe for cheap. It is an awesome boat and I got several trips out of it. Nice trip!

Awesome! Yeah they're great little river canoes for sure! Little sketchy on big water but holds its own!

@@RathAdventures Oh yeah for sure. I had mine out on Squam Lake in NH a few times in some waves that had me taking on a bit of water and I was puckered. But they are tough as hell and great for fishing especially. I dont know what possessed me to think I knew enough to paddle a 16 foot canoe but it is as close to a packboat as I can afford. My goal is to get up North and do some "real" canoe trips.

@@projectknifehand a 16 footer would definitely be better for canoe camping trips haha. That extra space makes a ton of difference!

@@RathAdventures It should lol. Crazy part is, it weighs 10 pounds less than the 119 lol. I havent taken it out yet so we shall see. No doubt there will be a learning curve.

@@projectknifehand the 119 is definitely a heavy boat for its size haha, but it can take one hell of a beating because of it. Tradeoff I'm okay with lol.

Hey Rath, I must say, I love your pack boat ! It is on my list. But tell me if you find that it could be longer, even by a foot making it faster/more stable? What is your synopsis of the boat ? Thanks man, Jeffrey

Thanks for the comment! For me personally, I love the size of this boat. I'm always solo, and I only ever plan on doing at most a 2-3 night trip with just the canoe, but most of it's use is day trips like seen in this video. As for how it tracks/stability/speed, it's honestly really good. If you have higher winds like I saw in the last half of my canoe day it will move you around a bit if you stop paddling and coast. But while paddling honestly I never really found an issue with speed/tracking issues. If you intend to do longer trips, or are a taller person (I'm 5'11") then a longer boat would probably be a good idea. I wouldn't want to be any taller than I am when sitting inside this thing.

@@RathAdventures good to know I’m 5’10’. What about the Drybag limit, will the cargo hold in the back accommodate a 70, 115 liter Drybag ?

@@jeffreyberube7812 I personally have a 65L drybag backpack, and I can fit it laying down, along with a 30L bear barrel standing up behind the seat. It's snug, but it fits.

Hey thanks for the comment! I went with a 240cm paddle, after getting a full season on it, it's a good size but I do want to try 250cm to see how it compares.

@@RathAdventures Thank you I will probably go with the 250cm as I am one the tall side, I was debating between the stingray and the manta ray paddle type, do you find the stingray gets the job done and is enough surface area to maneuver easily?

@@djhammer33 I have no issues with the sting ray at all, and the posilok system is absolutely fantastic.
