With 20th CENTURY WOMEN, acclaimed filmmaker Mike Mills (the Academy Award®- winning BEGINNERS) brings us a richly multilayered, funny, heart-stirring celebration of the complexities of women, family, time, and the connections we search for our whole lives. Set in Santa Barbara, the film follows Dorothea Fields (Annette Bening), a determined single mother in her mid-50s who is raising her adolescent son, Jamie (newcomer Lucas Jade Zumann, in a breakout performance) at a moment brimming with cultural change and rebellion. Dorothea enlists the help of two younger women in Jamie’s upbringing - via Abbie (Greta Gerwig), a free-spirited punk artist living as a boarder in the Fields’ home, and Julie (Elle Fanning), a savvy and provocative teenage neighbor. 20th CENTURY WOMEN is a poignant love letter to the people who raise us - and the times that form us - as this makeshift family forges fragile connections that will mystify and inspire them through their lives.

She saw straight through the 17 year old girl, using her newfound education to play the armchair psychologist. The phrases she uses even sound like they are ripped from a psychology magazine of the times. And yet for the sake of her son you can see that she decides to try extending an olive branch. She shares a vulnerability with the girl about her past relationships - because to her it's not about some sneaky underhand combat, she's trying to genuinely befriend her, for the sake of her son. As soon as she has given this information, the girl just gets up and leaves! Because to the girl it's about getting the upper hand. Dispiccable! You can see her wincing at the end, and at first I thought this was because she "lost" the exchange, but now I realize it's because she learned that the girl her son is dating is horribly toxic - wielding psychology as a power over people to manipulate them. Her son stands no chance against a girl who is that manipulative. I have come to admire this screenplay, the directing, and the performances.
