As a pianist, I love and admire Huangci's interpretation of the Toccatas! These pieces are not often-enough played! Some musicians and musicologists see them as "less-than," as compared to the more highly structured works like the Suites and Partitas. But they are so fun to play and to listen to! Huangci's full, Romantic sound is a choice that might alienate listeners who like Bach dry. But I love her playing of the Toccatas. I find it just beautiful and captivating to listen to. She captures the drama and improvisatory, capricious, in-the-moment nature of both the recitatives and fugues in these pieces. This is real pianism and musicianship.

Wo do I like better Bach or ms Huangci. As I listen and watch, both are equal. Forget about any other pleasures in the world, this is tops.

Huangci's playing grabs me, pulls me in, and won't let go. Musical performance should always do that; it doesn't. So I treasure playing--and music--like this.

Some seriously fine playing here. So invigorating and powerful a performance. Also, hats off, for the gutsy decision to use the score. The great Richter Himself was all in favour!!

Could you imagine if JS Bach would had access to the modern piano? OMG who knows what he would have been able to accomplish. Friggin amazing what we are hearing. This lady can play.

I don't know this pianist, there seems to be an inexhaustible supply of wonderful pianists nowadays. This lady is just so good. The criticism of one of the contributors here seems a bit unfair, and actually just wrong. First, this music wasn't composed for the piano, so a pianist does have the luxury of playing in a more 'informed' baroque style or deciding to play with all the considerable resources of the modern grand piano. She chose the latter. I would have thought the toccata and fugue particularly, played originally on the mightiest instrument of the time, the organ, lent itself to the most dramatic interpretation. Her more exaggerated movements of her hands and arms are a bit theatrical, but goodness, close your eyes if you don't like them. It'll be her way of incorporating the artistry of the music into the artistry of the performance.

Brilliant playing, but is it Bach?

I suppose you could ask that question for any music played on an instrument that didn't exist in Bach's day, however I think Bach would have approved of her performance. I loved it.

Fine playing but too much theatrics on display. I would be fine with her recordings but not live performances. Too distracting. Maybe the same teacher as Lang Lang.

She is on a completely different and higher level than Lang Lang. I don't find anything over- theatrical about her performing style...

@@Janaceks_Dad Completely agree. She is creating a new universe out of one we thought we knew, and bringing us in. There is nothing superfluous, a performance at once supremely controlled and flowing naturally. I am out of words. Superb.

I'm not sure if this is Bach with such harsh and brutal sound. Painful to watch her exaggerated, awkward hand and body movements. A terrifying performance.
