The Western Digital SSD shown in the video is incorrect, my apologies. I recommend the SN700 which is a Gen3 NVMe SSD (link in description) - I accidently selected the wrong version in the video.

Which SSD do you recommend for Backup important data from my Synology DS 423+. I upgrade my NAS recently to 2,5 Gig with good Black Friday deals. Good vid as always
@WunderTechTutorials3 күн бұрын
Thanks! Do you mean SSDs for use in the NAS, or an SSD specifically for backups?
@Arctics043 күн бұрын
I mean SSD for backups specifically. Like external SSD would probably be the best option there? What do you think? Do you have any recommendations?
@WunderTechTutorials3 күн бұрын
@@Arctics04 Is there a reason you want an SSD as opposed to an HDD? They're just so expensive in comparison to HDDs for the size, but if you want an SSD specifically, this one is 4TB at a decent price: www.wundertech.net/best-black-friday-deals-2024/#Crucial_X9_2TB4TB_SSD

does the 24tb drive work in rs1121+ ? The website only shows up to 20tb compatibility , maybe cuz synology doesnt make 24 tb drives?
@WunderTechTutorials3 күн бұрын
I unfortunately don't know - I'd imagine that they do, but since I don't have one of those to test on, I can't say for sure. Sorry about that.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on some Black Friday deals. I just want to chime in on shucking hard drives because some are hesitant. First I have literally had (14) 14TB shucked drives in my Synology NAS’s since 2020 as well as (4) 16TB shucked drives. I keep shucked cold spares in my closet just in case, but honestly they have performed flawlessly since day one. Don’t be afraid to try them, you’ll save a lot. My 14TB drives were from WD EasyStores and 16TB were from WD Element. All drives were in fact White Label WD Red drives. Lastly as far as removing the drives, literally a handful of guitar picks and a couple of old credit cards will do it. After the first one, you’ll be removing drives in 10 minutes max. Anyway, that’s just been my experience.
@WunderTechTutorials2 күн бұрын
This is awesome input, thank you! The drives I've shucked have been 12TB drives, and though a few of them have failed, overall, they were flawless for years and a LOT cheaper. Even yesterday, the WD Elements was ~$4/TB cheaper which adds up when you're buying multiple drives. As always, thanks for watching and sharing your experience!

Thanks! And totally agree, when buying that many drives, some good money was saved, enough to put towards a 10GbE NIC, RAM and Cache. For me it was a first time experiment shucking. Wasn’t sure how things would go over time, but promised to update folks, good or bad periodically. And you don’t need to thank me for watching, your videos are informative and easy to watch! I’ve gained a lot even before seeing your face! 🤣 So, thank you! 👍🏻👍🏻

So the $100 discount won't pay for the extra memory or the network card you will have to buy to really use this
@WunderTechTutorials3 күн бұрын
I'm assuming you're talking about the 1821+? If so, tough to say. If the 1825+ comes out at $999 and you DON'T want 10GbE, that will be a better option, but if you DO want 10GbE, the $100 extra (at minimum) isn't worth it just for the 4GB of memory it's rumored to come with.
@paulbritton14363 күн бұрын
@@WunderTechTutorials I want one of these and have for months. Been waiting for the 1831+ to release (joking, kinda of) I could probably live with 2.5gbe, but would like 10gbe $100 discount for this OLD unit seems a bit low, unless they plan to raise the price on the 1825+, the discount barely covers the added memory, doesn't cover the network. IDK, them killing the video app isn't helping things for me either and supposedly they have the easy software, but I've had a number of features I've tried to use and failed to get setup correctly. I'm not a computer noob either Frustrated by all of it at this point
@WunderTechTutorials3 күн бұрын
@@paulbritton1436 I am with you on the frustration. The thing that concerns me is that Robbie @ NASCompares said the rumored DS1825+ will come with the same processor, 2.5GbE instead of 1GbE, and 8GB of RAM instead of 4GB, and if anyone will know, it's him. If that's the case, you're really looking at a lateral move - it's not even an upgrade IMO...especially because they might increase the price. I'm not saying that to convince you to buy it because quite honestly, this is all just rumors and I have no info, but I hear you on the frustration and wish I could point you in the right direction. It's not crazy to wait for the DS1825+ at this point...assuming it comes out this decade LOL!

Synology DSM is not an enterprise NAS operating system... Enterprise NAS systems do not have all those extra's like docker, nvr and all that kind off stuff on the box. An Enterprise NAS (ex. NetApp) does NFS and SMB/CIFS and provides enterprise authentication methods, solid logging and alerting and that's about it.
@WunderTechTutorials3 күн бұрын
I don't disagree with that point, especially because enterprise usage for that stuff would be minimal, but it is used in enterprise environments around the world. Their entire rack station lineup is designed for enterprise use and it runs the same DSM operating system that a DS224+ runs.

12:44 Why?
@WunderTechTutorials3 күн бұрын
I have an old school train of thought that for read/write cache where it can actively destroy a storage pool/volume, you should use a tool made for the job, and consumer SSDs (though this is a good consumer SSD) isn't something I'd recommend. I'd really just use the WD Red SN700 for the endurance/reliability, though from a performance perspective, it suffers in comparison to the 980 Pro. For read-only cache, the 980 Pro is a great choice.
