Do not use DNS-over-TLS with unbound when acting as a recursive resolver to the root servers... The root servers are not DNS-over-TLS enabled. Since they are a vital backbone of the internet, they are also slow at enabling new features. They only follow after the lower DNS providers have battle tested new concepts, the feature matures, and it is 100% ready for prime time. This can take years. If you want DNS privacy with in your own recursive server, you will want to set up OpenVPN on your Unbound/Piehole server to auto connect on boot to the lowest ping server your VPN provider has to offer. This will encrypt all your Upstream DNS traffic through the tunnel should recursive request to the root servers need to be made. This means you need to trust your VPN provider, So only do this with a provider that has proven in court that it does not keep logs.

Once again, a great video. My thoughts. Using vpn and then acces via local IP will still expose you to a man in the middle attack. With all the smart home devices currently and the recent exposure of several of them... Considering of combining this with a proxy server to utilise a ssl and therefore https.

Curiously, some NAS, including specifically the ASUSSTOR do NOT work unless they are connected to the internet and not just the LAN. Active shares and file transfers just stop if the uplink goes down and won't work at all. Very disappointing. Unfortunately the actual setup was outside the return period and the buyer just decided to keep it. It would be a shame is 100 people bought it, replicated it and all gave them a 1 star review.

Do I need to setup the Pihole DNS-address in both the router's internet configuration AND in it's DHCP settings to push out to the clients? I mean, if the router uses the Pihole DNS for lookups, won't the clients also automatically use that, if they have the routers ip as DNS? Also: why is it "VERY" important to have two Pihole DNS servers? Is it just for fall-back if I need to restart my NAS?

Followed the entier vidéo. Pihole appears to be up and running but in reality doesn’t filter anything. If I add an specific domain to the blacklist I can still access it from my pc

The Minisforum MS-01 is a great option for the Proxmox cluster if you can get by without ECC. I have one of them with the 13th gen i9 and 96 GB Crucial DDR5 (ServeTheHome's forums have a post listing the specifical Crucial kit that I used and has been verified to work), and two Western Digital N700 2 TB NVMes in a RAIDZ1 mirror. Probably not the best solution, but it's incredibly powerful and power efficient if it meets your needs, and the connectivity is the best you'll find anywhere near that price point (to beat it, you'd need to have 25 Gbps networking anyway). I put a dual 2.5 Gbps NIC card in mine as I was planning to use it to virtualize Opnsense, but I don't think I"m going to do that now. I'm planning to put in a full Unifi network, but it's a big project as I need to get enough of the basement finished to make a large apartment down there. I don't know if I'll put the rack on the ground floor where my office is now and run down to the basement for my new office, or if I'll put the rack in the basement and try to run cables up to the rest of the home. But the home is not wired for ethernet at all whatsoever. The basement is unfinished so it will be easy enough to get that wired up during the finishing process, but we'll have to see what I can arrange to run cables to the other rooms of the home.

So the UNAS Pro doesn't support NFS shares? That's disappointing. Still, I didn't realize it was $500. That is a shockingly good value for what it is. I'm going to be getting a HL15 and putting TrueNAS Scale on it, but there's a part of me that wants to buy the UNAS Pro too just as a backup NAS since it's so cheap lol.

Both this one and the previous video are great. I am planning to put in a Ubiquiti network (hopefully sometime this year), but I'm planning to have a big chunk of the basement refinished and move my office down there, then put the rack where my offfice is now, so who knows when :)

I used this case in a build with a AMD 5 7600, unfortunately after 1year and a half I had to sell it as I wasn’t happy with temps on the cpu. With my proxmox instance with 6 VMs and 4-5 lxc containers it was running at constant 75-80 degrees. Tried cable management and removed the metal stuff behind the front fans didn’t help much. Only increasing the fan speed but at that point it was too loud.
@WunderTechTutorials3 күн бұрын
Yeah that's what I am a little worried about. All of the reviews tend to highlight how premium it is, and it is, but that second 80mm fan being blocked and only have two to start really kills the airflow in this case.

Nice build! I just did something similar, but instead of a rack mount case I went with a Node 304. I also went AM4 in order to not spend a fortune on ECC memory. I mimicked the HL8 that 45 Drives is producing. Gigabyte B550I Aorus Pro AX, Ryzen 5 Pro 5650GE, 64 GB of ECC memory, Corsair RM650 PSU, M.2 NVMe to SATA adapter (ASM11166 chip), intel dual port 10gbe SFP+ NIC. It idles at 20 watts with its boot drives, and runs at 42 watts with TrueNAS scale virtualized, running an an additional 6 drives (2 ironwolf spinners and 4 SM863a SSDs), and all of my VMs.

I have a couple of questions. I'm currently building my first homelab, really as an outcropping from my home network redesign. My current situation is clunky at best, and dangerously unreliable at worst. This endeavor began with my desire to run Home Assistant to play around with, and a subsequent realization of how frustrating my current network topology is. I've settled on and purchased all Ubiquiti hardware for this redesign; UDM Pro Max, Pro Max 24 PoE, Pro Max 16 PoE, along with an Agg for 10GbE desktops, etc. I'd also like to add a proper NAS solution, and I'm currently on the fence about direction here. The two applications of primary interest are HA and Jellyfin, along with backups for both Mac and Windows machines, though that isn't to say that I wouldn't expand that footprint in the future. I'm currently debating between two possible solutions; a dedicated NAS, and then something like a Mini PC to run apps via Proxmox, OR an all-in-one solution. Being a Software Engineer/Architect, my instinct is to separate the storage and application concerns, but there is something attractive about an all-in-one solution in terms of ease-of-use. If I decide to go the route of separating concerns, the UNAS Pro seems the obvious choice (although not having RAID 6 with no release date is annoying), due to cost and clean integration. Curious what your thoughts are there. Second question is; given your stack, and from what I understand, a belief that a NAS should focus on being a NAS, I'm wondering why you haven't selected the UNAS Pro for your redesign? Cheers!

I built a server very similar a couple years ago. My internal components are older but my case looks very similar. The case was very cheap (inexpensive) and it did not have the vent for the PSU so I cut that corner out with a angle grinder. The case top lays right on top of the PSU so it seals just fine. I don't know what brand the case is but it is built like a tank, very heavy, and it was about $50.00 on ebay brand new. I put this computer in my audio rack and it is hooked straight into my sound system. The music files are on my truenas server so I only put a small ssd in there for Debian. I use J River Media Center software to play music, but it also has a dlna server so I can use the same playlists anywhere on my network.

I think the 9900 will be bette rthan the 7900 when it comes out in terms of power efficiency. No idea when it will come out though. DDR5 ECC is hella expensive, but the server I will either be buying or building will be a storage server, so ECC is mandatory. I fell in love with the HL15 as soon as I saw it, so I knew that would be my case. For me, it basically came down to the fact that consumer platforms don't have enough PCIe lanes, and I wanted IPMI anyway (as IPMI is a sure thing, and the two Jet KVMs I have on the way MIGHT be acceptable replacements, but I hav eno hands-on experience with them). Mine will basically just be a NAS, and if I run any services on it, they will probably be "storage adjacent" ones, like Jellyfin / Emby / Plex if I put an Arc A310 in there, but I still needed to be able to put a GPU, AND bifurcation card if I wanted fast storage, AND a LSI SAS HBA, AND a dual 10 Gbps SFP+ NIC, etc. I couldn't seem to find an AM5 motherboard that would let me do all that, so I am leaning toward just having 45Homelab build me the HL15. It really stings paying $1000 for a 7 year old platform, but the Supermicro motherboard is nice, old or not, and I have seen reviews of that configuration where that crappy 6 core Xeon was pegged at around 40-50% with two simultaneous 10 Gbps transfers going, so I feel like it would probably have headroom for a few Docker containers. I could pay for the upgraded CPU, but that would sting more, and I still might depending on how things shake down.

If placement in rack allows some space above the server and processor airflow asks for some attention - old good drilling holes in case above processor to make exhaust always come handy. The aesthetical look depends on your drilling skills and instruments, of course. As alternative - its possible to make one bigger hole and 3d print ventilation lid as well. Good luck with new home server.

In this day and age there's little need to rip DVDs/BDs. Unless you're really into this flavor of BDSM, doing a proper rip is kinda hard. One can easily select from multiple rips made by people who do that a lot, choosing the size and quality you need, for most movies on the high seas. And if you already own the actual disk, it's not even piracy, since you paid for it. Just use a VPN if you're in one of those mickey-mouse loving jurisdictions

What was your previous setup? Have you changed any bios settings to save up more on power for your workload? Like disabling turbo boost and pbo, smt? Or using curve optimizer?

I've had a mix of a Ryzen 5900X (that ended up dying...COVID parts were not good) and a 12600K which I repurposed when the Ryzen died. Both were good overall, but the 9700X is proving to be super power efficient for the workload. I disabled a few of the standard OC'ing features, and will potentially play with PBO a little more, but in the beginning, PBO hurt performance a little too much so I have to refine it more than I did initially if I want to use it. Honestly though, I think I am fine with it as it is...but time will tell.

alternative for those who want to save some $$. Use the cpu/fan, memory, and nic with a deskmeet x600 and your price would be: 209.99 (deskmeet) + the other components = $882.95..sure, it's not rack mountable, but you could just use a shelf. and you could sell the barebones system far easier than a server chassis in the future.

However it doesn't outside of my local network (with VPN on). Am I missing something or was this not the purpose in the first place? My goal was to lose all the security warnings because the SSL was not setup. Edit: Do I have to push the openvpn connection over my own dns server to work?

Love the build, but I went much cheaper. I used the Rackchoice 2U short depth from Amazon. It's $100, has no exhaust, comes with front fans, but I put 2 noctua in the front and a noctua cooler. I love this case and wouldn't change it. Used Asrock Rack motherboard (gotta have that ipmi), Intel 9700 8 core/8 thread (cores are more important than threads per Proxmox), 64GB non-ecc, dual 1TB NVME for VMs using ZFS (for thin provisioned backups via NFS to Truenas) and a single 2.5 for the OS. Deigned a 3D mount for a 90mm thermaltake slim fan in front of the 5.25 bays. Also designed a 3D HDD mount for the 5.25 bays which holds 3 drives. You can still put a bunch of 2.5s in the original mounts. And designed a 3d mount for a 20mm noctua blowing across the SFP+ card as that needed a little cooling. I think all it was about $600.

6 months later, Unifi comes out with their 7 bay NAS with 10GbE included for $499. Yeah it has a weak processor so it can't run apps like Synology. Also, Unifi has released a bunch of low cost 10GbE switches ... so Synology had better be releasing AT LEAST 2.5GbE, if not 10GbE included with a good CPU that does transcoding.
