Bali is overrated. Bali is overcrowded. Bali is overhyped. You might have read or heard these lines many times from people whom Bali failed to impress. But maybe, just maybe, they visited the wrong area at the wrong time. Maybe their expectations are way too much? Maybe they went to the places known as tourist traps?
It’s time for another 12 episodes of escapades, starting the first four episodes in Indonesia before we move on to the next country of destination.
For this episode, let’s explore Kuta, Canggu, Legian, and Seminyak-four distinct areas that contribute to Bali’s allure as a global tourism hotspot. Situated in the mainland Bali, these areas comprise the long, scenic coastlines of Bali. Their accessibility to tourists is the main reason why during peak season, Bali is often seen as “crowded.” Some tourists who stay in these areas also remarked Bali as “overrated”.
We are here to uncover if there’s truth to such a statement and we’d let you know our findings based on experience soon. Though everyone is entitled to his/her own opinion, let us not distort facts.
KUTA, BALI, INDONESIA
Kuta, known for its stunning beaches and vibrant nightlife, is a magnet for surfers and sun-seekers alike. Beyond the waves, explore Kuta's lively markets, beachfront cafes, and iconic Poppies Lane for shopping and dining. It's the perfect spot to soak in Bali's relaxed coastal vibe.
During my first week on the island, I immersed myself into the embrace of Kuta, living like a local but making sure to see the sunset like a tourist before dusk, sipping wine or drinking beer while people watching, if not strolling by the beach to finish my 10,000 daily steps.
CANGGU, BALI, INDONESIA
Canggu offers a more laid-back alternative with its bohemian atmosphere and rice paddies stretching to the horizon. Echo Beach is a hotspot for surf enthusiasts, while the nearby cafes and yoga studios cater to those seeking tranquility amidst Bali’s natural beauty. It’s a haven for digital nomads and wellness seekers.
Canggu is a hotspot for westerners. When the war broke in Ukraine, this side of Bali has become home to many Russians who love a life free from political conflicts. In here, they can talk freely about the happenings of the world while drinking a bottle of beer or their favorite cocktail drinks over pizza or pasta, in between surf sessions, or while sending the sun home.
LEGIAN & SEMINYAK
Legian, nestled between Kuta and Seminyak, blends the best of both worlds. Here, you'll find a mix of beachfront resorts, local markets, and vibrant nightlife. Legian's charm lies in its bustling streets and diverse culinary scene, offering everything from street food to upscale dining experiences.
Seminyak exudes luxury and sophistication with its designer boutiques, chic beach clubs, and world-class dining. Watch the sunset from Potato Head Beach Club or indulge in spa treatments at one of Seminyak’s renowned wellness retreats. It’s the epitome of Bali’s modern elegance.
A GLOBAL DESTINATION
Bali's allure as a world-famous destination stems from its rich culture, stunning landscapes, and warm hospitality. Traditional Balinese ceremonies, such as the elaborate temple festivals and daily offerings, reflect the island’s deep spiritual roots. As modernization has brought new infrastructure and amenities, Bali continues to attract diverse travelers seeking both adventure and relaxation.
RESPONSIBLE TOURISM
The influx of tourists has undoubtedly transformed Bali’s economy, contributing significantly to Indonesia’s overall GDP. Tourism supports local businesses, from small artisan shops to large resorts, and provides livelihoods for countless Balinese families. However, sustainable tourism practices are crucial to preserve Bali’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.
If strolling around to shop or even just to buy from a grocery store, make sure to bring a shopping bag with you because the use of plastic bags are prohibited in the island. Stores and shops in Bali do not provide plastic bags and eco bags come with a cost.
WHERE TO STAY IN BALI?
Choosing where to stay in Bali depends on your preferences. Kuta offers vibrant nightlife and budget-friendly accommodations, perfect for young travelers. Canggu appeals to surfers and those seeking a laid-back lifestyle. Legian provides a central location with easy access to both relaxation and entertainment. Seminyak offers luxury and sophistication, ideal for indulging in Bali’s upscale dining and shopping experiences.
Whether you're drawn to Bali's beaches, cultural heritage, or culinary delights, each part of mainland Bali offers a unique experience. Embrace the island’s charm, explore its hidden gems, and discover why Bali captivates hearts from around the world.
True to the global hype, each corner of this Indonesian island paradise offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and vibrant experiences.
