21 Port Stops in 4 Days: Cruising The Norwegian Coast

I’ve just disembarked a cruise on a battery powered ship that visited 21 different ports in 4 days. The journey took us from Tromso up in the arctic circle all the way down to Bergen and I took this cruise in the middle of winter. I saw and did things on the trip that have to be seen to be believed, from the ports that we visited to the surprisingly luxurious ship and the food, I’ll show you it all.

Usually when you embark a cruise it’ll be lunchtime, maybe early afternoon. Our embarkation time was 11:45PM. I had a friend onboard who had already been on the ship for a week at this point and he had been sending me terrifying weather reports and footage of the ship travelling through rough seas and storms to come to pick me up. I was excited, but definitely a little nervous about getting onboard. I do get seasick and I don’t claim to know much about Norwegian weather but ‘high avalanche danger’ definitely didn’t seem good.
The ship that we were boarding was called the Havila Polaris and we walked through a deserted terminal and straight up the gangway to board. This felt like breaking every single cruise ship rule all at once. Normally you have to check in in the terminal, you have to go through security, they scan your bags, it usually takes a while but we walked up the walk way and we were in the ship. In the middle of the atrium.
We checked in at reception the same way as you would on a hotel on land and we were ready to start our cruise in under 5 minutes which was very exciting. To be honest I was very relieved that the ship really did turn up to pick us up at nearly midnight, I did double and triple check the paperwork I had to make sure I hadn’t misread it because it did seen different.
Some guests had already been onboard for a week at this point and some would only be on the ship for a couple of hours between ports, how they keep track of everybody coming and going I’ll never know but I did wonder how this would affect our cruise. It didn’t know if it would feel like a cruise at all.

Made my day, Emma! Last time I was in Oslo, some guy I met on the train found out I was a sailor (as he turned out to be as well). He gave me the combination for the lock on his sailboat in the harbor to use as a base. I stayed for weeks. I was asked to speak in a high school there about life in the US. there is something very relaxing about playing a board game or doing a puzzle while enjoying a hot cup of coffee/tea while watching the snow come down. I have a cabin that is only accessible by snow mobile in the winter and there is nothing as relaxing as heading up for a few days in the dead of winter and disconnecting from most of the outside world reading or watching a movie while it blizzards outside with aa wood burning fireplace heating the cabin.

Friend, For us who grew up with these ships, we don't define it as a "cruise". It's more a way of transportation, dating back to the days when roads on the coast of (northern) Norway were few and far between, the days when people used boats instead of cars. The coastal steamer route as we know it started in 1893, covering ports from Trondheim to Tromsø and was essential for the communities along the coast, carrying passengers and freight. So for us, it was/is like taking a bus or an airplane is for others. During the years that has passed, the route has been extended, down to Bergen and up to Kirkenes and calls on 34 ports. Even today its role is very much the same, carrying passengers and cargo from A to B. But it's also called "the world's most beautiful sea journey", and I totally agree! A round trip from Bergen to Kirkenes and back takes 11 days and is a memory for life! It's a time to relax, without the stress of other cruises to always be participating in events and activities, it's a time of "calm experiences" so to speak. Go in summer and you'll see the midnight sun, go in winter and experience the snow blowing horizontally. :D But take that trip, you will be glad you did! Bon voyage! :)

So adorable to hear your amazement at the snow throwers that the crew used to clear the decks...many of us northern US residents have one of them sitting in our garages every winter to clear our drives and sidewalks, so it's as common as a lawn mower! So cool to consider someone may have seen one for the first time as an adult!

Yep, in the Midwest of the US, if you have a sizable driveway it’s imperative to have a snow blower. It’ll not only save your back, but for many older adults it could help prevent a heart attack. There is a reason we call the heavier, slushy snow “heart attack snow”.

We spent 9 nights on Havila, round trip from Trondheim to Kirkenes in September. Much more hospitable weather. Highly recommend going through the Lofoten islands. Breathtaking!

Emma, you are so cute. "Little machines that clear the snow" those are fairly standard for many Canadian homes, we call them snowblowers. We use them to clear our driveway and sidewalks. Also, there are many here (not me) who do wear shorts in -10C and even -20C. We get to -30 C with no problem. The problem is the wind, the wind creates windchill which makes it feel like -40 or -50C. Great video!

This is now my favorite video of yours, dethroning the other ferry from Stockholm to Helsinki. I live on an island in the US and am quite used to taking the ferry. I think that's why I find cruising fascinating, despite never having been on a cruise. Ferries are our lifeline here, fun to see a way to get from here to there elevated via cruising.

I did the whole trip in the beginning of May 2016, Bergen to Kirkenes and back. One of my best vacations ever 😊. In 12 days we had just one afternoon with some drizzle, the rest was blue skies. Hardly any wind, so smooth sailing. And temperatures on land were in average 10 degrees Celsius.

The coastal route of Norway is a very traditional one. Norway has the second longest coastline in the world, so ships were naturally huge (and still is) for Norway. The competitor that used to have a monopoly on the routes actually still even use a ship from the 50ies for some cruises, I think mostly to Svalbard.

For taking pictures in cold like this, your best bet is to get gloves/mittens where you can remove the mitten part or remove the tips of certain fingers while the rest of your hand and fingers are still covered and warm.

Ok, now, this is a cruise I'd do.... this looks fantastic, and just imagine doing this in the summer too. A working ferry visiting many locations where it's a lifeline to those living there and those wanting to travel around Norway. It is extremely funny to see what Emma thinks is a huge amount of snow, and how she describes a snowblower after never needing to learn the word for it. Even growing up near NYC, we had one starting over 50 years ago. Having lived in New England for 48 years, I can't imagine not having one. But this year, in New Hampshire, I got mine ready to use this winter, and have not used it. We only had a snowfall approaching a foot deep one time this winter, and it was fluffy enough to just push with a big shovel. The ground is free of snow now, while some years at this time, there might still be snow 2 feet deep in the yard and snowbanks 5 feet high next to the road. Very interesting ship and cruise. In a way, very expensive per day for what it is. But in another way, maybe worth it for the different experience and the lack of crowds. Judging from how happy Emma looked, evaluating only objective measures of value for money, would be a mistake. What is the proper price for making someone happy and positively radiant?

First of all, to make someone happy and positively radiant is PRICELESS! :) Second, ,I grew up on the island shown 3 seconds into the video, (the first port Emma sees after Tromsø) and I recall winters there in the 70s with over 11' (yes, eleven feet!) of snow. The communities would only shut down when the plowtrucks couldn't handle the snow anymore and the roads were closed, and that was a rare occasion.

Hm, I thought there was something familiar with the first port pictures (3 secs into the video, and the first port you talk about after Tromsø), and behold! It's from Risøyhamn, Andøya, the island where I grew up! :) Yes, the trip from Bergen to Hammerfest is called the world's most beautiful sea journey, and I agree! Wether you sail in summer or winter, you will get memories for the rest of your life! At times violent seas in the winter, the midnight sun in the summer... I often traveled with what was then called Hurtigruten, the coastal steamer, with my mom when I was a kid, both during summer and winter, and the ships weren't as comfortable then as they are now. Many times during winter we had to brace ourselves in the bunk to prevent from falling out! But nevertheless, you could rely on the coastal steamer ships to always be on its way, and get you there. If you haven't done so already, I'd suggest you'd take a trip with "MS Nordstjernen" (North Star) around Svalbard. This ship was once a part of the coastal steamer fleet and I've travelled with her many times. And thank you very much for this video, it brought up fond memories from my childhood.

Great video. Very similar to the Hurtigruten one we did about 5 years ago, although that was an older ship. We went right at the start of January and it was amazing to see that amount of snow and that life just carried on, unlike it does in the UK after a couple of millimeters. You should have tried the hot-tubs, we did twice while in the Arctic circle, its amazing sitting there with snow falling on you watching the amazing views, only issue was having to get out of them onto the snow covered deck. Have another one booked for this winter with Hurtigruten doing Bergen - Kirkness - Bergen like we did last time. Did not know when we booked that there was a second company now doing the trip, so will compare them next time we go.

Emma, you felt warmer at the same temperature on the ferry because of less humidity in the air...that's why I find sunny but much colder days in Canada more comfortable ( with a duvet coat) than the humid cold and dreary skies that freeze you to the bone...unfortunately , that's what we are getting more and more often now. This type of cruise is absolutely on my bucket list - it just looks incredible! The fact there was a high avalanche warning cracks me up - I’m not convinced I’d have been brave enough to still board… The quality of this ship is SO much better than I expected from this type of ship - it looks amazing!

Ha ha, I did say this to David and he found it funny that I would think that the Avalanche would affect us at all. Apparently the ship doesn't go up in the mountains.. who knew!? Thanks lost and lots for watching!!

In the states we call them cross walks. In Canada they have very distinct chirps. It seems like Canada has more katty corner crossings for pedestrians than we do. Our house in Quebec had a mix when it came to the roof so we did have to arrange for snow and ice removal people to come or the roof would've caved in from the weight. Also, there is a t.v. show, "Deadliest Catch," and ice and snow removal are frequently discussed as they don't want the weight of them to sink their fishing vessels. Cool cruise. I have been thinking about doing a Norway cruise.

This looks absolutely amazing. I thought the Japanese ferries looked great and this looks the same or maybe even better. That colour scheme on the ship is so great looking and those views are outstanding.

I was on a Havila ship in late June 2023 from Trondheim to Kirkenes, right round the top of Norway. We got to stand on deck under the midnight sun which was amazing. The ship was full unlike yours and service at meal times was very slow, and the little dishes everything came in were a problem with many people complaining about the portion size until we discovered we could order as many as we wanted. But I still couldn't have brown bread toast at breakfast, I was told the chef didn't have time. I could see the toaster and the brown bread but unlike on a ship with a buffet I was told I couldn't do my own. I agree the cafe is great, we got so fed up with the main restaurant slow service we had most of our lunches in the cafe. We went on a number of the excursions and they were OK if a little short because of the time the ship was in port. Watching a 10 minute port stop is like watching a Formula 1 pit stop, the doors open before the ship has docked, the ramp for the forklift comes down with the ship still moving, the forklift drives on and off while the crew is still tying up the ship, and on departure the ship leaves port with the forklift ramp barely raised and closes the doors while it is sailing out of the harbour. This is a working ship carrying post and cargo as well as passengers. You can even get your car on board for Bergen to Kirkenes, we saw two bikers who had sailed up and then had their motorbikes taken off and they were going to ride all the way back down the coast of Norway.
