Oh wow. A thoroughly satisfying wrap up -you guys were absolutely right predicting listeners would feel satisfied when the 2 of you connected the dots. Thank you. I guess what sticks in my craw is 1) the missing hotel security footage, from that day only. 2) Paranoid schizophrenics tend to want to bring people into their world of paranoia versus holding their paranoid thoughts to themselves. Rey never tried to bring Allison into his world of “ they’re after us” And except for the note, he kept his “ramblings” to himself. And why did the alarm go off twice that night. 3) It is my understanding that there were several hours between the time the author heard the crash outside her condo and the time that Rey left his house. Maybe 4 hours. Where was Rey? And does that missing time have anything to do with his broken tibias? Porter was out of town but blood splatters were found at his house, and the blood pattern is consistent with someone Rey’s height, leaving the house, and age of blood is consistent with the date Rey went missing. The police have the blood. What happened to it. Russians occupied a floor at the Belvedere. And a guy “falling out a window” or jumping off a roof sounds distinctly Putin-esque. You’re probably right. But…mysterious elements remain.

I know you probably won’t read this as this is an episode from a while ago, but I’ll write it anyway. I usually love your stuff but your conclusion makes no sense… seems like you jumped to the conclusion. 1. Even if Porter is eliminated as a suspect, that doesn’t resolve the peculiar evidence of the scene. 2. Brett-what made you so quick to deem Porter’s statements as factual? 3. Rey was a filmmaker and filmmakers investigate the sunrise/sunset for shooting scenes-Rey may have been getting more film shots… didn’t he rent a studio to put his project together? Why the quick jump to suicide? Seems like you had that in mind and much of what you shared was interpreted through that perspective. 4. Did you read the autopsy? His neck wasn’t broken, arms weren’t damaged, and one of his legs wasn’t broken (had no damage), only one leg was broken. Seems to me that if someone jumps from such a height then they would damage those areas (as other such deaths have proved)-especially if they went feet first as many assume because of the roof hole’s size. 5. When police were in that roof (with the hole) they were worried about falling through. Apparently, it didn’t take much to damage that roof……I really REALLY believe you need to revisit your conclusion.

I completely agree with you. I have to respectfully disagree with them. To your point about more damage to the body, I had a nasty fall back in 2013. I was a little heavier than Rivera, but I only fell a QUARTER of the distance he did. bilateral tibial fractures, left was compound, right was ALMOST compund (I had a right knee injury so I tended to put more weight on my left side at all times), but what I noted was most odd about the autopsy is the lack of damage to the PELVIS. The pelvis acts as a sort of shock absorber. I suffered a major strain to the pubic symphasis and a fracture to the posterior aspect of my pelvis. Mind you, this is a QUARTER of the distance that River fell. If he fell 100+ ft. going down feet first, I don't see how he doesn't do ANY damage to the bones in his left leg, and virtualy no damage to the pelvis. It doesn't add up, compared to what I've experienced and what I've seen in accounts of other falls. I fully agree with you, they're accepting this suicide/mental breakdown explanation too easily.

I think I might be able to offer some insight into Rey’s state of mind vis a vis the video he couldn’t seem to finish and how mental illness might be involved. To start with, I have Bipolar 1. Of the 2 recognized types of Bipolar Disorder, 1 is the more severe. Bipolar 2 can be an inflated view of one’s own importance coupled with the incandescent energy to pursue goals that are in the end meaningless and self-destructive. Bipolar 1 is believing you are The One who has everything figured out - “supported” by all kinds of random ideas that connect perfectly in regard to your own grand vision but do not make an inkling of sense to anyone else. This kind of episode is more than likely going to end in some kind of a psychotic break, particularly when the REALITY of what’s been occurring crashes through. I speak as one who has had Bipolar 1 since my teens, which I minimized and hid from others until the age of 41. I am also a very creative person (writer/artist/musician) not only forever in pursuit of a masterpiece, but convinced that ANY endeavor can be a masterpiece if given the proper attention and energy. Not only that, but that the information imparted by said masterpiece is of CRUCIAL value to humankind, like I’m the one who figured out the step we need to take in order to quantum leap to the next stage of evolution (which is what Kubrick’s “2001” and the Matrix both deal with). Note that my belief is contingent on me being the Chosen One - the only person who has the answer. With my Bipolar now successfully treated, I can still make those odd connections between disparate ideas without going off the rails. True creativity depends on a “thinking outside the box” process that involves divergent thinking. Anyway, a few points to make here, from personal experience: 1) an obsession with absolute perfection. Nothing less will do, which is why promising works are sometimes abandoned by their creators after a psychotic break. Think of Brian Wilson’s “Smile” project. One such delusion Wilson had was that Phil Spector was going to steal his production techniques unless he kept them tightly under wraps. 2. While in college and in the grip of mania - I wrote some bizarre papers, all the while thinking they were brilliant and would get me worldwide recognition as significant breakthroughs that would push humankind to the next evolutionary step. Example: I was asked to write about a specific incident in Chaucer’s “Canterbury Tales,” wholly within the context of of that work, and yet the paper I turned in was a rather fractured analysis of the comedy of Lenny Bruce. I was absolutely convinced that I’d get recognition and awards for this. Reality crashed in when I received a very generous D- on the paper. Fortunately, my professor understood some things about bipolar and offered me a chance to take an incomplete in the course so that I could write an appropriate paper later. Another example is when I wrote a 40+ page paper for an elementary college English class, describing exactly how the Illuminati was taking over the world. The paper expected was to be between 5-7 pages. So, I understand how Rey could have written the note as disparate ideas he was putting together for a video he was certain would be a colossal game-changer and why it took him so long to finish this “masterpiece.” Then reality crashed in and perhaps tipped him over. He may have realized the utter folly of it and its dire consequences. Anyway, I love the way you handled this story and agree with your conclusions.

My first time listening to you was this week! Your Delphi podcast popped up on my feed and you both are great! Of course I wanted more so just finished listen to these 3 episodes about Rey Rivera and, I have found "my people". I love that you both have so much common sense, you entertain the craziness but when it comes down to it, common sense prevails. It's amazing how gullible people are and would rather believe crazy conspiracies than the obvious. No one wants to believe their loved ones are capable of being different than how we perceive them . I think Alison is feeling guilty she missed that he was spiraling into craziness and so it's easier to paint Stansberry as the villain. I do disagree with you that Stansberry owed Allison anything as far as paying off her debt. It sound like Rey left Stansberry in some debt as well by not coming thru with the video. Also, although he was pretty flashy, in my experience these sort of guys generally don't have the capital to back it up. If you look at his net worth today, it's not actually huge so doubtful he had 70,000 in cash to just give away. I believe there is much Allison and family have not been open about and Stansbury is actually protecting Rey's memory by keeping quiet as to who he knew Rey and Allison to actually be.

The list of things I found in the songs added up to what he wanted to convey to others. I started thinking "omg, this guy wants you guys to make a movie about him"...

They thought my friend Rob was playing some weird game when he was on his way to get married. He was very happy when he left work. Everyone knew the one thing Rob wanted most in life was a partner. He had purchased property at 16 and paid it off while waiting for the right girl. Apparently he met her and fell in love with her and her kids and they were set to be married after living together for a couple of years. So he left work with his schizophrenia under control and the Wedding of his dreams about to take place. He was out in BC working down the Highway and on his way into town he came around the corner of a mountain on the wrong side of the road and crashed straight into a semi-trailer head on. He was killed instantly at 24. The story the Girlfriend told was that she believed he was playing a game, testing Fate if the Wedding and Marriage were right. It was the one thing he really wanted but it wasn't in the cards for him.

I was in a car accident and already had damage to my C-spine from early onset OA from years of RA since college... so although my bug was totaled, I not only refused to be seen by medics I insisted i was FINE and for months 'pushed through' until one day I was with a friend and had this shooting pain radiating from my neck down my left shoulder blade... He insisted after a few of these and me screaming out from them that I go to the ER - and I again didn't want to go to the ER so it wasn't until one day I, like Alice, woke up and couldn't move that I finally called 911. Thankfully I am ok now but FMe.

You just skip to the roof suicide theory. Why did you not discuss the fact that no one saw Rey Rivera in the hotel and Rey Rivera was not captured on any security video cameras in the hotel? For someone to make it to the roof and avoid all people and all cameras, that person would need to be very familiar with the hotel. There is no evidence Rey Rivera had any such knowledge of the hotel to make it to the rooftop unoticed.

@@TheLastDragon5 As we say in the podcast, it would be a bold move indeed to lie about what the commissioner and lead detective said. The real question is has Allison been asked about it, and if so, what did she say? If she confirms the watching the sunset from the roof thing, that's significant. If she denied ever even saying that, might be more significant. All we can do is put the info out there.
@TheLastDragon54 жыл бұрын
@@ProsecutorsPodcast Does not seem plausible someone could enter a hotel and successfully make it to the roof avoiding all people and all cameras. I understand the camera at the roof was turned off/not working that day (red flag?). What about all other cameras before someone gets to the roof? Rey Rivera was not captured on any camera. Possible at least one other person may have been involved to achieve this task. Further investigation is warranted.
@ProsecutorsPodcast4 жыл бұрын
@@TheLastDragon5 Agree that the cameras are a weird coincidence. If we had them and he was alone, this wouldn't even be a story though, so maybe it's the coincidence that makes this interesting in the first place. @lutherkoch4215 ай бұрын
Excellent show! The case for a severe mental illness seems like the strongest explanation because it accounts for many Mr Rivera's strange behaviors. Yet, how could mental illness account for the incapacitated cameras at the Belvedere? Or is it not important to explain the cameras since this might be explained simply by the possibility that the cameras often glitched, thus making it a coincidence? Are the cameras, in fact, known to be unreliable? Did Rey have enough expertise as a videographer to disable all the surveillance cameras before his life ended? If Rey was the one who disabled the cameras, doesn't that suggest premeditated action? I would be happy to hear what The Prosecutors think. Is it worth considering the cameras at all or would it only amount to speculation?

Brett's theory is appealing. But I don't see how it explains the letter/note, the home alarm going off twice at 1 am, the medical examiner believing that damage to his shins were not consistent with a fall, as well as his money clip missing, which was a gift from his wife. I would think that Agora would probably be selling a DVD of general investment lessons or something like that, rather than specific stock tips, so it can sell to a wider audience. (Also, having tape around of specific stock tips is just a bad idea. Around this time, there were lots of videos and things for sale at outrageous prices, offering nothing more than well known but not easily accessible information.) The material in the video being timely is a major assumption of the theory.
@ProsecutorsPodcast4 жыл бұрын
From Mikita Brottman's book: "Allison handed over the tape to Agora when the police returned it to her, but this was ninety days after Rey’s death; by then, the investment advice given at the conference was useless, and the tape could no longer be used." That indicates that the information was at least somewhat time sensitive. Whether it was still useful if they had it 90 days earlier, I can't say. The letter/note is explained by his deteriorating mental condition. The alarm could be squirrels, as the police suggested, or a legitimate break in attempt. Looking at the autopsy, I'm not sure where the shins thing even came from, and I think Alice's guess is probably the best one for money clip. At the end of the day, the evidence strongly suggests he took that running leap off the building. The only question for me is why.
@TheRealSzillard3 жыл бұрын
The autopsy report said the injuries were consistent with a fall, so this indication must have been an unofficial comment. Falling through another roof is highly unusual, so you wouldn't expect injuries to be textbook. He might have left the money clip on the roof and one of the staff nicked it when going up to smoke.

I agree most likely a psychotic break, but I do struggle with the physics of his glasses not being damaged and not following him through the hole. It's not right to say that if they fell off his person when he hit the lower roof that they didn't fall very far, as was suggested in Part 1. They would have been travelling at the same speed as Rey when they became separated from his person. The only way I can imagine the glasses not being shattered is if they were held against his body preventing impact with a hard surface; but in this case they would have been found by his person rather than by the hole. The only alternative explanation I can think of is that Rey had left his glasses (and possibly other items) with someone who knew what had happened to Rey and didn't want to be connected with his death. Whether they did anything wrong or not, perhaps that person planted the glasses and phone near the hole to avoid having to explain to police why they came to have them when Rey died.

Very likely. I imagine he broke his flip-flop trying to run in them, exactly like Alice did, so instead ran and jumped with them in his hand. You both always do such amazing work. Love you guys. Respectfully, I have to disagree with the conclusion on this one. the mental health aspect is completely speculative. if one note means you're schizophrenic, then put me in the hospital for some of the things I've written in my life. that's not enough to convince me. I've got to agree with some of the other comments here. Maybe if he were going around telling her about "the game" he's playing or "the assassins" or whatever coming for them, I could buy it. My grandmother was suffering from dementia, and when she had her hallucinations and psychotic breaks, she was adamently trying to convince everyone of what was happening in her delusion. The instances here with Rivera sound more like genuinie responses to what he perceives as legitimate threats, which level out when he realizes there isn't a present danger. I mean, for Christ's sake one incident was because his house alarm went off. That's not a psychotic break, that a perfectly rational response to what he thinks is an imminent threat. I'm sorry, but to me it sounds like you're trying too hard to shoehorn everything into this "mental breakdown" narrative. I'm not saying it's out of the realm of possbility, but to me it sounds too much like you're starting with "psychotic break" and trying to force and contort everything to fit that idea. I'm not seeing enough evidence to share that conclusion. And then the autopsy....I've made several comments referencing my own experience with a fall similar to this. At a fraction of the height, I landed foot first, slightly favoring my right side, still had bilateral tibial fractures. Left leg was compound, right leg was ALMOST compound. I favored my right leg and it was STILL almost a compound fracture. Also a strained pubic symphasis and fracture on the posterior aspect of my pelvis, on the ilium. I'm not going to act like all falls/acdcidents/etc. are equal, but Newton's 3rd law has to apply at some point. With the way the body is designed and works mechanically, certain things happen. The sacroiliac joint is a shock absorber to protect the spine. I look at my fall, and I see how the body did its job and protected my spine, and the price to pay was pelvic damage. I've seen this in other falls as well. The problem I have with the autopsy is that in the upper body, we see a lot of symetry. Fractures in the mandible and zygomatic, fractures in the costals (posterior/anterior, lateral), this sounds like evenly distributed force. Every action gets an equal and opposite reaction. When we get to the lower body, we stop seeing this symetry. Right tibia is a compound fracture, but there's no damage to the tibia of the left leg. No damage to either of the femurs. No damage to the feet besides some bruising on the toes of the LEFT foot. Fracture on the right pubic ramus and a ruptured right testicle. Nothing on the posterior pelvis, nothing on the left aspect of the pelvis. Now externally, no abrasions or lacerations on the right leg besides the compound fracture. But the left leg is covered top to bottom in contusions and lacerations. Rey Rivera's ENTIRE BODY was a contradiction. The superior portion of his body has symetrical injuries, the inferior half doesn't. The right inferior half of his body has internal damage, the left inferior half has external damage. The bones of his face are fractured but the only external injury to his face/head is a laceration above his left eyebrow. The hole...it was a relatively small hole for a relatively large man. As other have stated, he would've had to pencil dive to make that small of a hole. Bigger than a frisby, smaller than a hoolahoop. I've been trying to find some measurements of the hole. Doesn't seem like there are any. Of course, from what I've heard, the police didn't take any of their normal investigative measures for this case, conveniently. I would love to see some measurements of the hole and Rey's shoulder width. Doesn't seem like there is either of those available. I just have a hard time fathoming how any of this works out. Let's just say hypothetically he does clear the distance. Would he not be fallling at an angle just from the forward innertia? Because what this looks like to me is he went straight forward over the spot, then fell straight down. If he was angled to his right side, why is there so much more bruising on the left side? The physics of this doesn't make sense, the injuries don't make sense, literally nothing about this suicide hypothesis makes any sense at all. If anyone is interested in this case, I suggest checking out The Land Of The Unsolved podcast. they look at this case from the perspective of Rey's body, the injuries, and the lack of an actual investigation. Personally, my hypothesis is that he was murdered. Admittedly, it's mostly speculation, but so is this suicide hypothesis. I think it's more plausible that he was hit by a vehicle. I can only guess at the circumstances. I had an idea that maybe, like Brett said, he was told he wasn't going to be getting paid for the video and perhaps he was going to blackmail them with the inside trading? IDK just an idea, but I really don't see how this suicide went down. Nothing about it adds up. And the three abbrasions on his abdomen. I'm thinking those are from a grill on a vehicle. Along with the other organ lacerations, which I have to wonder if lacerations would be the only damage that soft tissue organs would sustain from a fall that high. I'm no expert, I just think those organs would be ruptured if anything. But laceratrions, that sounds more like a sharp impact to a finite area. Even the lacerations, theres a tendency for the majority of lacerations and damage to be located on the right half of the organs, and in the midline of the body. There was mention of an unique scar on his RIGHT hip: a circle with a line through it. Look at a Nissan logo...so to reiterate, I don't know the exact circumstances, but I think this sounds like he was hit by a car, possibly a Pathfinder or Xterra. If you look at the grill design for a 2002 nissan pathfinder, 3 horizontal bars with the Nissan logo in the middle. I think Rey walked into a set up. I think Stansberry, or rather, someone ordered by Stansberry, told him he came back to the area to meet him and discuss paying him for his work. That might be worthy of an "Oh shit" and running out in the middle of the night, 70-90k dollars. Personally, I think he took that special penny because he thought he was finally going to be able to do right by Allison. Rey gets to the meeting spot, finds out it's an ambush, tries to run away and gets hit by this vehicle (which I suspect is a Pathfinder). The physics of the impact: I believe he was trying to get away and they went full speed at him. He might've turned back slightly or was at a bit of an angle; gets hit. His right tibia lower leg is the first point of contact. It is broken severely. Next, his right hip hits the center of the grill, causing that distinct scar. This impact begins to rotate him to his right. The pelvis and right testicle take the next part of the impact, causing that fracture and hemmorage. The right half of his upper body slam into the car, causing the lacerations to the organs and abrasions to the right side of his body. He gets rotated to his middle, causing the three abdominal abrasions and perhaps the heart laceration and sternum fracture. His left leg gets slammed into the bumper and grill, causing the knee contusion, lower leg contusion, the four thigh contusions, foot contusion and laceration, but doesn't cause any breaks. I think this extra damage happening to the left leg also explains the tear in his pants on the uipper left thigh area. From here, he gets rotated further to his left, causing the laceration to the upper lobe of the left lung and the contusion on the upper left chest as well as the laceration above his left eye. The car stops and Rey is thrown off, landing on his back, causing the abrassions to the posterior of his arms, and any additional damage to the cranial plates. To me, this explanation makes FAR more sense as to how he sustained these injuries. This is what I believe actually happened.

Baltimore has a large shock trauma unit (helicopter question). Not that I support that theory.

Another question that came up for me… similar with Elisa Lam, did either of them have any family history of bipolar or any psychotic illnesses? Often major mental health disorders have a genetic component and other family members have some symptoms, other MH disorders, or the same disorders as the person in question.

I have even read where people believe that he was dropped from a helicopter ..Which makes absolutely no sense but they believe it to be a fact..

Actually I agree, love this podcast but occasionally they get lost in anecdotes and unrelated details.

Love You Both . Are you saying that he jump straight out 20ft and the force carried him another 20ft. Making total distance would be 40ft from the edge of the building he jumped from ??? If so this little info snack might add to your theory. WATCH: 19-Year-Old Records 29-Foot, 11.5 Inch Long Jump, Furthest Since 1995 It didn't say how fast he was running when he made this awesome jump. Keep up the good work. Please

The horizontal distance he traveled was 43 feet while falling about 100 feet. Remember, a long jumper has to travel all that distance from the ground. Much easier to travel forward when you are falling down at the same time with no ground to stop your momentum.

If Ray sprinted from that roof to jump, he was doing it to get to the next building's roof. This is exactly a pivotal scene from The Matrix, which is the first movie listed in the note. This doesn't seem like a coincidence at all. Neo is told to jump to the next roof, something he believes he cannot do. The idea is to gain control over your own reality. It could be Ray went nuts and tried it himself, and the note is evidence of his mental state, but it wasn't intended to be suicide - or this was a poetic stunt as some sort of initiation into, or retreat for a special club/organization. The note would then be evidence Ray was writing a speech for this retreat, and maybe this stunt was supposed to be an initiation into the special club himself. Such stunts are fairly common in expensive retreats. The note sounds like it's some sort of script for a retreat organized by Porter/his company/Agora, for rich folks [or at least folks willing to pay a lot of money to go to a retreat]. Maybe there was a small, high-tier club for the people getting stock tips (i.e. maybe a secret part of the Oxford Club), and Ray [a great writer] was also being paid to make speeches for this. The note maybe was some draft for the speech that someone at the retreat was going to give, maybe the dimensions of the note are simply the expected dimensions of whatever the speaker would be reading off of. It was taped to his chair simply as a reminder that this was a priority he couldn't forget. He could have been looking into the Masons for inspiration for writing the speech, or just from curiosity after being told about the special club. If this retreat involves high-adrenaline stunts [as rich people retreats do sometimes], maybe Ray's initiation was such a stunt, inspired by The Matrix. A stunt gone wrong maybe? Like Ray was supposed to land on a cushion on the roof, but he missed, or the roof collapsed when he hit the cushion anyways, or it was purposefully a faulty cushion. And then this accident was covered up. It's possible Ray wasn't the only one who made the jump, but the integrity of the roof and cushion was ruined after others had made this jump. The main problem with this is - why would you choose such a difficult/unknown location for such stunts? The answer could just be the person organizing it is cheap, or that this was a private initiation not part of a group retreat. Maybe Bonner was there, or helped cover it up. The simplest explanation might be that Ray was working on a speech like above, alongside the video, got the call, and decided to kill himself poetically recreating a moment from his favorite movie - maybe he was even thinking "Either I die from this, or I survive and can take back control of my life." as making the jump would be symbolic of taking control of your reality. EDIT: Heard the extra info just now - if that info is true, it definitely was a decision he made himself. Though the cameras not working that one particular day is still very suspicious.
