I use puppy pads in the bottom of the trash can to absorb any trash can messes. Keeps can clean. I also use the puppy pads for cooking grease instead of down the drain. Pour the cooled grease on the pad and fold it up and place in a plastic bag. Toss in trash can. Good bye grease!!

The tips are useful and I appreciate them. I clean my garbage can every time I empty them, I'm not waiting the day after. One of the reason for this is that I'm from a tropical country twice a year minimum would not work. I do put newspaper at the bottom, but as extra protection against smells etc I add baking soda. Its effective, and I add baking soda to the garbage bag, put some in and shake the bag for the soda to spread throughout and then put the bag in the bin. I'm a big fan of baking soda, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, liquid soap and essential oil esp tea tree and vanilla. With this my home is clean.

Melissa, I prefer for my house to smell like vanilla, which is a scent my husband will tolerate. I use a cotton balls, which I place in strategic locations. I use a vanilla essential oil in my diffusers and on my stove mixed with cinnamon and citrus. I’m not a summer person, but, I agree opening the windows is the best fresh air solution 😀

Hi Melissa, I'm trying pretty much all your DIY cleaning and disinfecting recipes - mostly very good. One recipe that hasn't worked for me is to take orange and lemon peals, put them in a mason jar with either rubbing alcohol or vinegar to improve the smell. Some juices, sugar from the peels does come out and that will translate in to trying to clean with orange juice - leaves a sugary orange trail. I also tried the lemon peels in a blender recipe for some natural bleach, but when I open the blender it exploded with lemon slime on my walls, ceiling and my face. I probably got the recipe wrong, but still the chopped up lemon peels are going to be a slimy substance which will stick on shirts and other clothes, linens. Thanks M. Jaye Chicago, IL USA

Do you leave stuff on the floor for any amount of time or do you just mop up right afterwards? Love apple orange, vanilla, pine, fresh cut grass ,. Outdoor smells but not the mud smell. Thanks for mentioning the dirt laundry in a clean closet. My daughter at college didn't believe me. You know moms never anything until someone else says the same thing. Well your daughter is young. Right now you know everything but give it time. About 11 or 12 you won't know anything according to her. Thanks for all of your advice . Thanks for your time and effort too.

I have to be super careful what EOs and (more importantly) delivery methods I use around my bird. But my favorite scent combos include citrus. If I could figure out how to make a natural ‘rain/grass’ scent, I’d also go for that. As for delivery methods, diffusers and aerosolized products are out of the question, but a basic spray bottle works great, as long as I’m not too close. Vinegar is my cleaner of choice, just letting it air out a bit before he goes back in. As for the rest of the house, gotta love cinnamon and fruit!

I truly miss getting my windows wide open. We live in south Florida for the last ten years and our AC runs 98 % of the time and the remaining 2 % when the weather gets cool enough to open window there is this time of year when this tree is blooming that I’m allergic to. So I get my windows wide open about once a year. Unfortunately. I also miss sleeping with the open windows.

I appreciate your DIY cleaning recipes, but I'm very sensitive to the scent of vinegar. Any suggestions on how to minimize it (without just throwing another strong scent on top to make a nastier combo)? also in the vinegar vein, sometimes when I buy large containers for cleaning, it can yellow.
