I definitely can say I disagree with the commentator. Art doesn't trivialize things, and the performance is beyond beautiful, I have been watching Marina and Gwendal since I was a teenager, they are amazing, they introduced the lifting of a man by a woman, which amazed us in the 90's . The technique is a feast to watch, and no offense to freedom. Art is freedom, which is what we all should stand and dance for.

They are French and MLK is not theirs to appropriate.

@@ExiledStardust Does freedom, MLK spoke about, belong only to Americans? To all Americans or only Afro-Americans? If only Americans can do anything with MLK then does it mean that let say Mozart music can only be used by Austrians? Or could other sportsmen use it?

@@ExiledStardust Yet they did and won the gold thanks to that. But thank you for your opinion though, Mr(s) "Cultural Appropriation Police"

Thanks for sharing this beautiful performance. I can see why it was controversial, especially at the time. But I think it’s highly appropriate, given the deep and longstanding traditions of freedom prized by both France and the US. Our Statue of Liberty is French, after all, and both countries went through a revolution in the 18th century. I also love their costumes, and how her hair picked up the color in her dress. Perhaps people didn’t appreciate the costumes as much at the time, since they were of a newer style, one that has become more popular over time? Flashy, yes, but beautiful and appropriately flowing to emphasize the freedom. I loved it all. Thanks again.

So well done. This was art and did not trivialize MLK's words at all.

Only Americans can find something so beautiful offensive. Grow up.

in 2002, black people had only had the priesthood in mormonism, the state religion of utah, for 24 years. less than the time between now and the fall of the soviet union. I think the costumes and speech were very fitting.

Not one of my favourite free dances from this couple. But I thought they were the class of the field here. I can't believe they almost lost to Lobacheva & Averbukh though. The two teams are nowhere close to one another in terms of skating abilities and skills.

Great performance, but I agree with the announcer that using MLK was tacky as hell and the costumes are awful. But not as awful as the Russians.
