Man it sound like that door was testing your Patient. You did the right thing man cool down and walk away have a nice cold beer 🍺 as heavy that door is could have got hurt. I'm just glad that you and JD did not get hurt. It's really coming along nice man for doing it by yourself. You are the man. I am glad you was able to get that door problem solved. Andrew question man? My youngest son is upset because I haven't been able to take him on a truck trip ( he loves riding in the truck )because my foot is in the cast. He's been at his grandfather's house on the weekends cutting firewood. Do you know when you going to do a video on cutting some wood up so he can watch it he likes doing those type of things now. I know you been real busy so. I'm getting ready to be real busy on these crutches I'm about to get 12 to 18 inch of snow less than 24 hours from now. Been getting warnings all day long put away the flip flops and bring out the snow blower. Me and my wife really enjoyed the livestream with you and your wife on Sunday. You take it easy man.

Yikes that's a lot of snow! Hope you heal up real soon Mack. As far as cutting firewood, it'll probably be a little while. I want to get the storm shelter done and sealed up before I tackle any other projects. But let your son know, that the day after tomorrow I will have a wood splitting video. My firewood rack is starting to get really low, and has me a bit nervous LOL! Take care

@@TKCL thank you man I really appreciate that. I've been staying off of it a lot and keeping my foot up so hope it heals real fast. You right man that's a lot of snow and my wife don't want me out in it tomorrow because beginning of the year I broke both of my feet in a truck accident that's why i been having so much foot problem this year. My oldest son just walked through the door so now I got all five boys and my granddaughter here who can shovel snow tomorrow. Thank you I will let my younger son know about the wood splitting video coming out. You can't get low on the fire wood man we can't afford to have you nervous man."LOL" thank you man.

For the door gap, what about using a dog like on a marine hatch or door, lever connected on both sides that you can wedge the door closed and block the lever on the inside to keep it from being forced open in a storm.

I was worried about the door gap when you were building. Try splicing the difference with the hinge adjustment, push bottom hinge out a little at a time goes along way...then just bend the door like you’re doing with your bolt. What a door!
@TKCL
@TKCL 4 жыл бұрын
I already adjusted top in and bottom out before it starts affecting other areas. Now that I've had it bolted closed a few days the gap has closed up some. It's actually very easy to open and close now. Had a rain and when I opened the door, not a single drop inside the door frame! I was thrilled how tight the door is sealing with the bolt.

But after he calmed down, took a shower, had a beer and had a good nights rest. He was able to go back over his mistakes and come up with a solution to adjust it. Like I said I APPLAUD him for doing this project on his own. You can see he has his family to worry about when it comes to protecting them in case weather poses a danger ⚠️.

Andrew, add three very small steel storm windows and use as a hunt house. The big bucks do hang around the barn/cabin during hunting season. Plant a narrow long food plots next to tree lines.

My wife would probably not care for me digging up the yard and planting food plots in it lol. I will admit I do see a lot of deer tracks in the yard, but it's very rare to see a deer in the daytime around the shops. P. S. Don't tell her, but once the house back porch is built, I do plan on having a rocking chair that may or may not be able to over look a feeder in the trees 😁.

Drip edge over top of the door? Everything looks great!
@TKCL
@TKCL 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I talked about it in this episode looking to potentially add drip edge covering that would seal to the building and reach past the door edge. That way water would run off past the door. Basically a door gutter. However we just got 1 1/2 inches of rain and not a drop made it inside, I was happy.

Great job on the exterior latch. Before you made it I was going to suggest a latch like I have on my dump trailer, a "T" shaped bolt in a tube that swivels into the latch. Your design is very close and should work well.
@TKCL
@TKCL 4 жыл бұрын
I really thought about a swinging latch myself. After I trim around the door I was a bit concerned about it swinging out of the way. Call me paranoid, but I also wanted a latch I could remove in case it swung back and caught while we were inside during a storm.

Great door brother! One suggestion you might want cut off the exterior locking screw so it doesn't take so long to unbolt it. Threaded fasteners typically have the full strength of the threads after a couple of threads.
@TKCL
@TKCL 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! As the door gap closes and the door takes new shape, I plan on doing that. The quicker the better no doubt. The gap is already closing up after a few days being bolted closed and the door is even easier to open and close. Very happy with that!

Incredible job! The way you have interlocked all the wood together and secured everything with augers to the ground, I would feel very comfortable and safe in your shelter. I love working wood, but with the very high cost, the only question I have for you is why didn't you just go with concrete and/or filled blocks with rebar? My bet is you've answered this 100 times, so I'm sorry for being 101. :)

I would be concerned about the door swinging to the outside. In the event of a major storm it would be possible for debris being piled against the door, trapping you inside.
@TKCL
@TKCL 4 жыл бұрын
Very valid point and one I've addressed a couple of times. I have not discussed it recently, but I am installing a window AC unit on the backside of the shelter. It will have a steel fold down door on the interior to protect us during high winds when the AC is not needed. It also will serve as a secondary escape route with the AC being easily removed. I made sure I ordered a AC that had a large enough opening I can squeeze out of. It will be here late week and I'll have a video out by next week showing what I'm talking about.

I live in Oklahoma, and I still think that with an EF4 or EF5 that we get in this State that you'd go sailing through the air LOL about the only security that we have is to go underground :-)
@TKCL
@TKCL 4 жыл бұрын
Maybe so, as I've stated before I'd have a underground bunker in those states. No doubt this will not have a problem with our ef0, 1 and very rare 2 tornados. Odds are we will never get hit again, this will most likely see nothing but hurricanes in its lifetime. I trust it 100 percent for that! The videos I've seen of the aftermath of those big out west tornados is unreal. I'm glad I live where I'll never experience one. Most people think we are crazy to live in Florida with all the hurricanes. To be honest the news blows them out of proportion for views, they should be respected, but I'd take a hurricane over a tornado any day. Plus it's nice seeing them coming from a week away.
@Revtraveler

@@TKCL That's very true. They do sell above ground shelters here but I don't think that I would trust them. I have an underground shelter. Look at the stinkin crap that we've been through lol kzbin.info/www/bejne/nn7EmZehrNeApNk
@TKCL
@TKCL 4 жыл бұрын
Wow, thank God we don't get those. With our high water table underground doesn't work here. Half buried doesn't look appealing either. I priced above ground steel and concrete shelters, I like to threw up at the price! The shelter I'm building fits our budget and certainly covers the wind ratings for our area.
@Revtraveler
@Revtraveler 4 жыл бұрын
I would really really love to be able to build a shelter that would work like you're building. We just never know what we're going to get here. That particular tornado (in the viedo) was a multi vortex, 4 that became 1. Two miles north of that one (at my house), we had a EF1 that went over us. It did $25,000 worth of damage at my place. We aren't too crazy about spring time in Oklahoma lol
@TKCL
@TKCL 4 жыл бұрын
I can imagine! This spring was the worst tornado outbreak I can ever remember in our area. Had another come through my county a couple of weeks ago with a cold front. My friend got hit a few weeks after we did last March. We just move to this part of the State and the locals keep calling it tornado alley. Great! Ugh 😩

I totally understand what you say and I have to answer this all the time ,its my fault for not stating this in every video. We live in Florida, monster tornados simply do not exist here, we do get tornados often, the most common are ef0 and ef1s. No doubt this shelter will withstand those tornados and hurricanes.
