My first chance to try a wild camp on Dumgoyne summit in the new Alpkit Polestar tent. An ideal fast and light overnight trial with lots of wind, clag and rain to see how liveable such a basic tent is.

It reminds me of my first tent an Ultimate U2 which was possibly the simplest single skin tent ever. It cost sod all and served me well for a few years till one day when it converted fog to water, literally pints of water.

Looks a decent lightweight option.My fear would be if the wind changed direction in the night and hit it side on.If i remember rightly Andrew you got this tent with two poles by mistake,maybe a central 90 or 100 cm pole might be no bad thing with an outer pole sleeve.Somewhere to clip the door on too.200-250g weight increase but id be happy to hump it for stability.Good review thanks!

Yes I was thinking same, an optional central hoop you could choose when you need it and a sewn in sleeve already in the fly

I was thinking that on your introduction to the tent video that it seemed more like a big bivi. I like the the idea of using the trekking poles to prop up a tent, especially to keep the weight down backpacking. Overall I think this tent needs a bit more tweaking, and it could be a cracking wee tent. 👍

Good review Andrew. I've just ordered the Lanshan 1 2021 model for the West Highland Way. More space and less weight. I feel Alpkit will probably tweak the design to compete with the Lanshan more.

Yes im still 'jurys out' on this and not sure whether it's any stronger than single pole designs like the Pro 1 though it is more enclosed and warmer as a result. A

I bought one of these from their main shop in Hathersage in the Peak District , paid half price £80..bargain!! I've had a couple of extra peg points halfway down the outer skin to increase the tension and reduce the 'flap' cost £10 to have it done, makes a big difference...

Andrew, I have been curious about the performance of the Tarptent Moment in the conditions found in the UK. Have you ever tested one? Looks to be a well thought out design. I normally use a hammock in the eastern USA, but might consider a tent for use where trees are scarce. I thoroughly enjoy your tent reviews. You have some beautiful country to enjoy!

Hey Daniel, Never tried or even see one in the flesh here. However it was well rated by Chris Townsend, well know UK wild camping expert. For most folk in Europe you're more likely to see them using the Scarp 1 or Hilleberg Enan, similar but more robust I guess. Thanks for the kind comments. A

@@AndrewParkOutdoors I have read a book by Mr. Townsend years ago about winter camping, which I did when I was in my 30s and 40s. Now I stick to more mundane pursuits, such as hiking the Appalachian Trail in 100+ mile stretches. I just got back from doing the southernmost 274 miles. I would have liked to have done the final 544 miles, but life back home needed my presence. Thanks again!👍

It's a good question Kieran, I think there's not much in it as anything with a walking pole structure wont collapse but the fabric ( well silnylon versions anyway ) will stretch and flap whatever the deisign, DCF has much less movement.
