21cc Rides ep14: Yamaha Thunderace, the begrudged classic

I ride my thunderace, film some of it using a replacement camera, tell you about the bike, and manage to finish this video a year late. Hopefully answering the question no one asked: Is the Thunderace any good?

Had a FZR1000 exup, bought an 99r1 in all honesty, was disappointed with the R1. Exup pulled your arms out all the way to 180 and is more planted. Top bike.

I dont know what R1/Fzr1000 you drove, but i have both and the r1 is a scalpel and better in every way compared to the fzr1000 minus comfort due to rider position

Had mine for 17 years. Not used this year, no time. But a vEry underrated bike indeed.. ant get the same power and handling for what it is worth.

Had one, 96 & 97, loads of fun, would lift the front wheel in 4th. Then came the R1, (98) R&W) and that, was that.

I have ridden a Thunderace, great bikes! I own a YZF750R, my newest bike is a FZR600R, which I fitted Blue Spot calipers to, they make a big difference, so long as you fit the matching master cylinder.

@21ccFilms Thanks, the Foxeye lights look great, but with uprated bulbs, they produce an awesome light, too. 1993 YZF750R in Gunmetal Grey, Black and Purple. 1994 FZR600R in Black Cocktail Colours.

Migrated 91 FZR 1000 to 96 YZF 1000. I enjoyed the bike, very comfortable and would lift tghe front in 4th at 60mph+ Migrated to the 98 R1 and that, was that.

I had a Thunderace, and it was a great bike, now 20+ years later, I have the very similar type of machine, a ZX9R from 99, don' sell your Ace!

You're the only one to point out the acronym, it's never occurred to me in the nearly 13 years I've had it, lol. Yes, they do, but I've worked on a load that don't, and I hope keyless is a passing fad if I'm honest.

Keep it, I've got one and love it, I've owned arguably much better bikes, 04 blade for one, in every way measurable the blade was better, but the big ace makes a better road bike, properly fast handles much better than it looks and stops on 10p. Mine won't be for sale any time soon.
