@Pipiaafurz it would also be interesting to see a backfire recoil pad and break used together on maybe a .30 cal or something. See how low they can truly get the recoil reduced

That's a nice looking rifle. I run Surefire Pro Comp brakes and they are highly effective but you won't make very many friends on the range with it. It's really loud on the blast zone.

After watching your first video on muzzle brakes, it gave me the idea to have my last rifle build having a threaded muzzle. It's a Wssm 223 in 1-9 twist. 5/8 -24 treaded muzzle and the brake is a Tactical Ordnance. It's amazing on the recoil reduction using 77gr bullets in this rifle build.

Kind of curious what a common milspec A2 flash-hider comes in for recoil reduction.

I love that you recognized the necessity of measuring muzzle, rise, and where the muscle settles after a shot due to the break. Might I suggest simply optically measuring the muzzle rise through the scope by starting with a plan of impact, and measuring it to a point of rest. My crosshairs on the X fire shot and see where it lands when the cross hairs come to rest.

Great effort put into building the test rig. Super big credit to you, another cool thing to watch out for in the future. I will definitely be keenly watching out to (hopefully) see you test all sorts of muzzle brakes, suppressors, flash hiders & blast projectors(?) on all sorts of calibres & loads. I also hope there's a way to easily tweak the rig to test loads & calibres in Handguns. And yup...dearly love to see you test the lower bore axis handguns like Chiappa Rhino revolver & Laugo Alien semi auto PS - think you seriously earned the right to wear a white lab coat hahaha

If you're talking sound levels for the shooter then omni directional mics at the general location of a persons ears would be to measure both db of sound or shot and use full frequency spectrum measures to show the DB level of lower frequency 🆚 higher frequency would also allow you to calculate pressure also. Maybe?

It would be an interesting experiment to compare/contrast the recoil impulse and duration (Without a muzzle brake) between a standard 30.06 or equivalent, a 12 Gauge shotgun and a Black Powder loaded 45-70. They sure feel different on the shoulder!
@benwagner477011 ай бұрын
You might be able to measure blast effects objectively with a static pressure transducer at the shooter position (and/or an observer to the side.)

Okay I really appreciate that you went to the extreme to test these brakes, BUT, all that really matters is can you personally tell the difference between with brake and without brake, and how much did it change the rifles tune.
@1clnsdime111 ай бұрын
Every muzzle brake will change the tune, and they will all change it differently. You just have to change your load.

Thinking it might be interesting to look at the recoil trace of a tacomHQ structured barrel, for difference in vibe characteristics to a approximate equivalent…

I like the idea of comparing fast vs. slow powders, but what would be cool to look at is noting the percent burn of the powder (QuickLoad outputs this data). I guess what I'm getting at is: does a load that has 100% of the powder burn up in the barrel produce less (or more) recoil than a load with say 90-95% of the powder burning up? The point being, does unburned powder "flash over" as added muzzle blast once it exits the barrel, and if so does that added force maybe change the performance of the brakes?

With popularity of 6mm in PRS I would like to see a 6mm test with all the brands you can put together including brands that offer only larger diameter brakes like 6.5mm. Also could you include the Cortina brake as I have two of them. I have an eye condition that requires me to reduce recoil as much as possible to prevent my retina from tearing. I curently shoot a lot of .22LR and pcp air rifles along with an Ophthalmologist approved 21 pound .223, I am currently building a 6GT and want to get the most effective brake. Thank you for all your videos and the work you put into them is appreciated.

How about measuring noise levels to the sides along with the brakes. My experience indicates that the noise levels to the side (ie shooters to the left and right) drastically increases.
@maciekskontakt9 ай бұрын
Ths SJC was also tested in full auto (you can find on youtube as well) rifle and it outperforms everything thanks to that upwards blast tester was able to hold gun flat and hitting target precisely with high rate shots. The video shows that muzzle does not rise almost at at all while tester was unloading series of shots. So you have to consider design purpose. Also SJC is the most popular brake in 3-Gun competition and next is M4-72 (though it has highest concussion and range officer cannot stand next to you). I had my arms blasted with hot gases and i stood in big plume of gases when practicing 6 fast shots on three targets for competition practice. I went almost deaf causing a lot of stir between RSO's thinking that something exploded (it did not and all six shots were in targets).

The biggest caveat is that you still use a human to pull the trigger. The data is still pretty sound, but it could be improved by further reducing human error. As to rise and sound analysis, those modifications would be relatively easy to implement on the rig. Free float the firearm in the rig and use a high-speed camera to capture motion against a gridded backdrop. Sound could be simply measured with a few decibel meters placed at strategic locations (positions of shooter's ears, adjacent lanes, observer, downrange, etc.). If you wanted to gather more sound information, you could use measurement microphones instead of just db meters. Granted, that would require significant time processing the results or coming up with a programmatic solution. But for me, I would like to see the impact of each brake on accuracy and precision. Recoil and rise reduction help get back on target faster. Sound and recoil management make shooting more pleasant. But if the brake adversely affects repeatable shot placement, it's scrap metal.

There are some great tests that have been done over the years. The hole being concentric and .015-.018 total clearance was the about all they came up with for accuracy. And a large expansion chamber when it comes out of the barre also.
