Customer states engine cranks and will not start. Starts and dies.
ECM code P0129F. Diagnostics leads to a faulty fuel pump driver control module using alternative method to avoid disassembly.

Thank you for this video, I just used it as a reference to locate and replace it on my wife's 2020 Equinox when it suddenly died on us at a restaurant. Only symptom before was a gradual loss of power we were noticing, but never really thought about it.

Great job coming up with an alternative test method! I have a 3-phase tester that I never used yet; would have been a good time to use it. 😃😃

Thank you! That’s interesting, I don’t think I’ve heard of such a tool. What tester is it? That would be interesting. I’ve been faced with more and more 3-phase electrical diagnostics on these modern vehicles coming out in recent years.

I'm in the car repair business for 32 years. I use to not always follow strictly the oem repair guidelines too. Many years of experience teach us many logical shortcuts.

Especially when they don’t want to pay sufficiently for diagnostic time. Factory diagnostic procedures are often not very efficient, some are even written poorly. The good thing is that GM service information is actually pretty good at leading you to the failure if you needed to fall back on it. Thank you!

I believe you only have to measure resistance of the fuel pump motor windings two times (from 1 to 2, and 1 to 3) to verify continuity through all windings. Subsequently (and provided the measured resistances are okay) a measurement from one winding to ground and power will be enough too. And thanks for sharing your procedures and experiences. Btw. - how many psi does a three phase pump deliver?
@DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist
@DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist 11 ай бұрын
You are correct… I decided to just visually show everything rather than try to explain that we were actually repeating tests. According to service information the normal operating pressure for the low side 3-phase fuel supply pump is 46psi-97psi… depending on the module desired fuel pressure command. Thank you very much for watching and commenting!

Could you possibly list a part number for the module? I’m pretty sure I’ve found what to buy but I want to be 100% before I pull the trigger.
@DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist
@DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist Ай бұрын
You should get the part number from the old module for best results. Otherwise, your local dealership should be able to look it up for you by Vin number. Thanks.

Hi, I got the same code in my vehicle. Thank you so much for posting this video; it really helped a lot!!! I have read in one of your comments that this is pretty common code dealing with the fuel pump module. Is this like a one time thing, and after you change it, it's fixed for good, or have you had times where customers come back because of the same problem?

The part number for the fuel pump driver module has been updated a few times. I haven’t seen a repeat failure after repair thus far. Thanks for watching!

@@DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I truly appreciate it. I have a 2022 Terrain GMC, same symptoms as the equinox in the video. I took it to the dealership, and it was the fuel pump module. I hope the new modules are fixed and this is a one-time thing. When the new module is replaced, do they need to be reprogrammed? Thanks
@DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist

You are welcome. The new module does not need to be programmed.

I’m dealing with this now on a 2020 equinox. Dealer is telling me that the module needs to be programmed. Just want to verify that a new replacement doesn’t need to be programmed?
@1fastxc

They also want to start by replacing the fuel pump and then work their way back to the module. LOL

Nine times out of ten it is the control module. Does not need to be programmed, but does need to be the correct part number for the VIN. Thanks.

Mine is a 2020 and I ordered the older part number 13540029 as that was the only one I could get my hands on. The newest superceeded number is on back order for weeks yet. I’m hoping that the new one works.

Also, is there a symbol on electrical parts that do need to be programmed? I saw another video and that guy referenced a symbol in that video. Thanks for your help!
@DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist
@DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist 2 ай бұрын
I am sure it will work just fine. I am not aware of any such symbol, indicating that it needs to be programmed… Perhaps I should look into that.

You probably don't see many more. Gmt 400 and 800 anymore, right? Cuz most of those trucks are rusted out or dead.
@DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist

Not as often anymore, I actually work on a lot of GMT-800s still. They are quite common around here….rust isn’t much of a problem here unless they’re driven on the coastal beach. I even occasionally still see GMT-400s…. Also still fairly common around here along with Ford and Dodges of the same era. GMT-400s are where I did most of my early learning.

What do you drive by in a way? I drive a 2008Silverado LTZ Dark metallic blue. It was a two-year-old cover for this body style. 2007 half to 2008. And then they went to Imperial blue. Most beautiful cowboy ever seen. And it's my first vehicle I had to replace. The lifter's though original transmission still runs like a champ.

@@danielb-c9100 I have 2003 GMC Yukon and a 2007 Silverado and some old Ford trucks. 89 Ford Ranger 4 cylinder 5 speed was my first vehicle…the one I learned the most on…cut my teeth on the old Ford EEC systems, did the clutch and manual transmission rebuild on that one for the first time by myself several years ago.

Does the year chevy equinox 2020 need reprogramming ?
@DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist
@DadsGarageDiagnosticSpecialist 6 ай бұрын
The fuel pump driver control module does not need programming no. It should be plug and play. This failure is turning out to be common. I replaced another one today….I’ve replaced a few of them since uploading this video too. Thanks.

Yes I currently work for a GM dealership. GMT-900 trucks and SUVs were the latest and greatest new thing when I was beginning my new career. I learned a lot on them over the years…..back then I was working at an independent repair shop and worked on all makes and all models. Thanks again for commenting.
