My mom used to do the little-flower-thing wherever I had a hole in my clothes and I kinda hated it, because it drew attention to the fact that my clothes had holes. Now thirty years later I think it's really cool, and I'm quite the expert in fixing my clothes whenever necessary. Sewing against throw-away-culture! :) And thanks to my mom, who taught me how to fix things.

I LOVE that this video reintroduces the use of sewing machines and sewing to the new generation! I sewed all my young life - making a LOT of my own clothes and cried when fabric stores started closing for lack of popular interest.

@@MiddleEastMilli Thanks, Milli. The only stirrers I've ever seen here are white, but I never go to fast food places. The hack for zippers that won't stay zipped really works. I've been doing that for over 20 years. You don't even have to make a loop you can simply leave the cord long enough to wrap around the button several times, button the button, and go. Next restroom trip... Easy in and out! No fumbling with a loop, quickly unravels and go. EZ PZ.

The one where you made the neckline higher by taking up about 1/2” or 1cm on either side of the shoulder seam would only have raised the neckline by about 1/2” in front and 1/2” in back. You’d have to take up about 4” on either side of the shoulder seam for the neckline to be raised that much, and then the back of the neckline would disappear, the sleeve holes would be 8” smaller, and the whole shirt would be about 4” shorter. This is a good hack, but it works best on a sleeveless garment like a tank top, and you can only raise a neckline by an inch or so without ruining the lines of the garment.

@@hecker5605 So sorry to hear that. I used to make clothes for a doll I had. I wasn't interested in dolls but fashion. I taught myself to knit from my mother's 'how to' brochures at only five yrs. Made my first jumper/sweater at 9yrs. I ended up teaching myself to design as well. We did have a class in school for both sexes that gave sewing lessons but that's in Australia. I do hope you get to sew soon as it's so convenient to be able to do your own repairs and the great feeling you get from making something you can wear. Keep persisting. I can't think why you're not allowed to sew if you can use the internet but just hang in there, you'll make it! 😉

I had a scoop neckline top that was great when I bought it, but after washing it a few times, it gaped when I bent over... embarrassing! So, instead of your hack (which is a bit dubious) I threaded a strong but light cord into the front neck seam. While wearing the top, draw the cord up slightly and anchor it at the shoulder seams. This hack works every time and doesn’t alter the shape of the garment.

Yes the yellow sweater is a long and short running stitch. Doing the loop that looks like a flower leaf is just giving you a grid to sew against. You are just sewing a pinch then a long stitch. . _ . _ . _ That is what you are really sewing. The loop makes sure you are doing it on the correct side, and fun. The red sweater, no it wouldnt be pulled up that much. So some of these are great for hand stitching and quick fixes. But trust me if you really want to alter, learn to sew on a machine. It’s not that hard. Get a mid century basic, used, all metal, less expensive to fix and usually only cleaning and timing. Ive been recycling thrift clothing for 50 years. Shorten sleeves. Switch out. Some of the methods on machine though do not do. Dragging material back and forth like that. Also be careful sewing into things like soap, tape. Many videos say tape to mark it, no, will seriously junk up your bobbin and needles. There are gears in there. Otherwise, this and all videos are inspiration. You are the designer.

So I was just more informing about sewing in general. Some of the hand work here is very good and decorative. Not putting down the video for effort, just some things are better done with real construction. Beginners will be happier with end results. Ive been sewing since 1957 or so, age 7 on a treadle. Simples stuff but was sewing with patterns before I was 12 and took home etc. go to a used book store and get OLD sewing instruction books from the 40s, 50s, 60. Some tutorials online are good. Sewign with Nancy still has her basic videos out there

Bonnie Faltz well then if I were to have to mend a zipper I’d take it to a proper seamstress see the hot glue stays on for so so long and ruins the fabric causing it to rot (yes fabric can rot). So I wouldn’t trust these hacks

The scoop neck tops were not the same item in the before and after. The hack only moves it up by a centimetre and you can see that the before has a neck length that is so much deeper. Questions credibility of hacks.

Agreed, I am a seamstress and I can confirm... it isn't the same shirt. If it is... they cut it up and resewed it having it shorter than previous to get that effect.
